Still need to add one more part, care to guess which one? Need a hint? It's something very traditional in a machinist toolchest made by H Gerstner and Sons. They left this part out on some models in the past and customers were irate.

Mirror?

Got my latest project finished this morning. About six weeks of effort and a pile of walnut and maple (218 pieces of wood to be exact). Even hand made some of the solid brass hardware.

Off to buy some new tools now.

Actually it's for a collection of old drafting instruments. Might even stash a few old pocket knives in there if I can find an empty drawer. :ROFLMAO:

Secret compartment?

There is only one top lid brace mechanism (so it doesn't close on its own) in your photos. The right side brace is installed, and you need to add the left one.
Did I win the toaster? Did I? Did I?

Today went to my mother's house for a nice Sunday lunch. Then took the mutt on an after lunch walk. Back home and just finished watching my Mississippi State Bulldogs win the SEC basketball tournament.:flowers: A nice surprise. Now watching some golf on tv. Tonight, finish my mom's tax return.

Flew to Berlin, Germanz <drat, where is mz QWERTZ kezboard_<9

Aborted landing at Tegel as there was a plane on the runway......just about 100 feet from the ground.

I think we'll call that a near miss......

Thanks Martha and to everyone else for the comments about the toolchest.

No secret compartments, and only one lid brace, but the missing piece was, as Martha guessed, the mirror. It's got one now. :greetings10:

I've heard several reasons for the mirror; one was to help you get something out of your eye, another is the old factories didn't have washrooms so a machinist could use the mirror to do a little primping before heading home.

 No toaster this time Freebird. Remember when the banks used to give a away all the junk for new deposits? Maybe that would stimulate the economy.

Humm... the government could buy up a bunch of cars and appliances and have the banks give them out to new depositors. Maybe even have a special drawing and give away a free foreclosed house every week. :ROFLMAO:

This is my favorite thread...I always read it Sunday nights...but I never post because I'm not, you know, FIRE'd. Anyway, thanks for...

Uncle's beautiful chest,
freebird's grapes,
Jug's modern-poetry post, (he fought the cat, and the...cat won)
Dawg's giant plunger,
Khan's nature observations,
and the rest of the gang of usual suspects...

You hit on something I thought about yesterday re auto makers and govt bailouts. I didn't want to post it cuz I was afraid it would start a FIREstorm (pardon the pun). But you left me an opening...which I never pass up. ;)
My crazy thought du jour goes public today. Uncle Sam has some agencies that require local travel by highway. If Uncle bails out the automakers, they should comp a fleet of cars as a TY and major moneysaver to the taxpayer. Or maybe a truckload of spare parts or a new tank here and there...

Hmm today. Exercised fairly hard. Kicked back. Listened to some older tunes. Had a nice margarita or two. Then played my cousin on a few computer games. Talk about visiting the ages eh :) What a great day so far. I got 6 hours left. Lets see what I can do. :)

Woke up late, went to parents house for lunch and finish my taxes.
Came home and did two massages.
Had dinner....trying to not do laundry, but I guess I will.
Sleep early tonight :)

I had a nice day. Woke up to snow, after bacon and eggs left in rain and caught a bus downtown. Went to a very interesting exhibit of American Art from The Yale U. Art Gallery. It is huge; I'll have to go back more than once. It amounts to a history lesson.

Day got sunny but very windy. I walked around downtown for a while, then came home and met a son and DIL for drinks and sushi. I mistakenly ordered three sashimi servings instead of one, so I wound up eating a pretty good sized plate of raw tuna, yellowtail and salmon.

The check was a bit shocking, but I ate it so I paid up.

My DIL crocheted me a very nice watch cap.

Ha

I'm working my way up to being able to do a mini triathlon. They come in a variety of distances, most common seems to be 400m swim, 13 mile bike, and 3 mile run. I did the bike ride and the run this morning. Got it done in 90 minutes. Not the fastest, but I think I could finish in less than 2 hrs. Would have tried the full monte, but had to go to w*rk.

1977 - mail order - got it delivered UPS - I had it half way out of the delivery package - when she saw it and announced -'you are not going to put your dirty old tools in there.'

It was her most favorite jewelry box - the oldest of three that went in Katrina.

I had a variety of tool boxes/bags but never a machinist chest.

heh heh heh - she liked the mirror too. ;)

Got to compare dog groomers today - the retriever(with winter red hair) is due for his spring haircut.

Today is hang out and listen to music over digital cable. Right now I have what I refer to as "bubble music". It is essentially all instrumental music that is peaceful and very relaxing to listen to. Strings, woods, winds, light percussion, harps, piano, some guitar...nice. :)
When the sun shines through the front picture window at midday, i"ll probably catch myself zzzzzzzzz-ing. If one of my posts is a string of a single letter, you'll know what happened.

Worked at the p.d. this a.m. and dealt with various degrees of shenanigans. One case involved vodka, a mj pipe, throwing up, a nose ring, pain meds and a cell phone. Yep...all one case. Later went to one of my banks to make a deposit. Inquired about any special cd rates...in an instant I had people surrounding me like chickens on a june bug.

This afternoon just waiting on the guys to come back home.

Tonight I'll get my 2nd President's Volunteer Recognition award at the p.d. After that, we'll go out to dinner, come back home and play some tunes.

Great FIRE day. Ocean kayaking past reefs, mangroves, clear blue waters, nice warm breeze. Too bad everyone can't reach FIRE status. DW and I feel very fortunate to be able to do this stuff especially in the current economy.

Took my 92 year old Mom back to my sister's house . She was visiting me for a week and yesterday she fell on the way into the movie . We spent five hours in an emergency room . I love my Mom but no way could I live with her full time .She was living alone in Pa. and my sister decided to move her to Florida and it has been a mistake . She misses her friends , her sister who lived next door , her senior group , her church , her Physician ,her local casino and most of all her freedom . My sister is also miserable because my Mom depends on her for a social life , trips to church, doctor visits , etc. . So the moral of the story is leave your parents were they are until they absolutely have to move for safety reasons .

Tough situation Moemg. I hope your mom can slowly adjust for the better.

Beautiful chest! You are so talented.

Welcome to WV, Dave. I am in Morgantown.

Today my brother called and we talked for 1 1/2 hours. Solved all the problems of the world.

Went to 4 different places looking for a Ginger Wasabi sauce that my DH loves. I think that it came in a gift basket at Christmas and I had already been to 3 other stores looking for it. I finally found it at The Forks of Cheat Lake Winery. Even though I have lived in Morgantown since 1986, I had never been there before, so I had to buy a bottle of their wine along with the 2 jars of Ginger Wasabi sauce. Came home and my sister called and we were on the phone for at least an hour. I had not talked to her since Friday and that is a very long time for us not to talk. I had thrown a turkey breast in the crockpot earlier and fixed some mashed potatoes and a veggie, so we had a very nice meal. After dinner, I came into the computer room and shut the door and my DH was in the family room downstairs. All of a sudden, all h*ll broke loose! We have 5 cats and I could hear running and crashing. I went running out and my DH came running up the stairs. One of the cats had went halfway through the bag handle and was running to try to get the bag off of him. It scared all of the cats. Our oldest and largest male cat gets scared so easily and puffs up and starts making this weird noise and then tries to attack our smallest female cat every time he gets scared. I had to rescue her and put her behind closed doors and then my DH lifted the couch, to get the cat who still had the bag on him, so that we could cut the wine bag off of him. I then went back to the small cat, Tia, who was scared to death, and realized that she was limping badly. At first, we thought that her leg was broken, but she started putting a little bit of weight on it, so I am hoping that it is sprained. I put her in the spare bedroom for the night, along with food, water and a litter box. I will see how she is doing in the morning and decide if I should take her to the vet.

My DD called and told me that her DH received his orders today for the Sea School (Navy) that he put in for and has to report to TX no later than 7/8 and I believe that he will be there for 3 months. He might have to go to another training for 3 additional months after that, so my DD and my dear grandbaby will be moving back home with us while he is gone. DD asked me if I would watch the grandbaby while she drove out with him and then she would fly back. DGB will be 1 the beginning of July. The bad news is we don't have any idea where he will be stationed after his training. He is currently stationed in Bethesda MD and we get to see them every couple of weeks. Daughter is my baby and grandbaby is the only grandbaby, so if he is stationed across country, it looks like I will have a lot of flying in my future and I am definitely not looking forward to the flying part.

Pretty day here today. First sunny day we have had in awhile. Golf course was very wet so cart path only. Took the mutt on a 2+ mile walk this afternoon. Boy the pollen is out. The golf course looked hazy from all the pollen falling from the pine trees. Amazing my sinuses were not going ape shat. :-\

Took care of my grandson today. What a little joy he is, three months old and already talking! Gooo, gooo, ga, ga. Likes watching basketball and oprah on TV.

Also, went for a hike with doggie, interspersed with some sprints. I'm on a new exercise/diet program. Noticed a few pitying looks from the young folks at the chubby old lady trying to run. Oh well. Someday they'll be old too, if they're lucky.

Ooooooo...I have real big plans today.
Wednesday used to be "Hump Day" while w*rking, i.e. mid-point to TGIF. Now it is Execursion Day.

Need to pick up eye cream order from Avon lady. Cream is of the anti-wrinkle variety. Oops, I said the other "W" word !
Chinese buffet day with friends.
Go to WallyWorld as a favor to dh2b to exchange a composite cable for a component cable. Somebody  grabbed the wrong package without reading carefully. The charge will be very steep for this favor.
Get my hair cut if I feel like it.
Return to home base and sink into my recliner due to sheer exhaustion. :dead:

Went downtown where the Mennonite lady sets up her truck to sell food from her family farm.

Bought a steak, chicken wings, bratwurst, eggs, and chicken hearts and gizzards.

Tomorrow: gizzards for breakfast.
