What did you do today? 2017 version

I flew an almost 4 hour Angel Flight mission with a patient suffering from renal carcinoma. She is a veteran's widow and still has a great attitude. I always enjoy flying her.

I picked up my first zucchini for the season. But I've checked around and there are no bees. I'm wondering if I have to do the bee's job forever. Maybe it's too cold and wet, they will come out later. My areas do have bees. My neighbor's cactus flowers were packed with bees not so long ago. They finally cut the stem off so I don't see any bees around this morning.
On the other hand, I did hand picked a handful of snails and threw them away.
My husband and I were enjoying our Climbing Collete rose in the front side yard. So nice to see a mass of flowers.

I met a few former co-w*orkers for wings and a couple pops at a local watering hole yesterday. They were celebrating someone's planned 6 months of leave (yesterday was his last day). He's a good friend and I was the only one who knew that it was actually his stealth retirement...he won't be going back.

Only 3 weeks left till our 6-week European trek.
I am so thrilled to read that you are headed for a 6 week trip to Europe! Mostly so glad that you are feeling healthy enough to do this.

At one point a few years back, I thought maybe you were on Death's door (although you have always been very private about your health problem at that time). It sounds like you have left that problem behind you and have recovered completely or nearly so.

If that is the case, then I think this is utterly marvelous. :D  Have a wonderful time in Europe. :D

Spent the last 3 hours TRYING to love MINT.com.

Quicken is no longer importing Barclay's transactions and it's been a known problem for the last 6 weeks. It won't even bring the transactions in that are manually downloaded using the Quicken format.

Mint just doesn't give me the info I need in a format that I like. Never thought I'd get here but I guess I'm finally OLD and stuck in my ways :)

At this point it will be better to manually put in the missing Barclay's transactions than try to keep beating my head against the wall. Main problem is I don't like the way it does budgeting. Plus we run two small businesses and I have all of the business end set up in Quicken to do what I need it to do.

Oh well...

Gym day, then went with DW to Ruby Tuesday's for lunch with a 50% off the second meal coupon charged to a cc that has a 10% statement credit promotion going on, then a minor grocery run, charged to the same cc for a 10% statement credit.

Thank you. I have been feeling OK for a few years now, and even drove the RV to the Canadian Maritimes in late 2014 while still recovering. Still have ugly surgery scars as reminders. :)

Well, if you play in a cover band, sooner or later you're going to have to play a song that you absolutely hate. I've been "half assing" my way through such a song for a while now and today I finally manned up, listened to it a few times, and learned how to play it properly.

Spent 4 hours at the Auto Repair shop having DW's A/C compressor replaced. Half way through I walked down the street to a nice little bistro and had lunch.
The repair came in $200 under the estimate:dance:

When I saw Led Zeppelin in 1977, they played an awesome set, both electric and acoustic stuff; but, of course, everyone kept yelling for "Stairway to Heaven", so LZ played a really sh!tty rendition... The crowd went wild! [emoji12]

Out in the new RV for our first "big" trip since our first few shakedown trips close to home. In Biloxi for sister in law's 60'th birthday party. Casinos and beach time. Next stop . . . Destin,FL. Really starting to enjoy the RV lifestyle. Can't believe that eight months ago I was still waking up everyday and fighting traffic into the office to put in my 10 hours. Retirement is good.

Yeah, Led Zep hates Stairway. Singer Thom Yorke of Radiohead hates their huge hit "Creep". It's been rumoured that he has walked off stage at times rather than play it.

Spent an hour this morning giving the vacation house a thorough vacuuming, then went out to play the rest of the day.

First up was a hike to the top of Mt. Pisgah (Jim Thorpe, PA). Not a long hike, and only ~500 feet elevation gain, but with the typical rocky trail common in PA. There is a lot of history at the top -- for example the ruins of the engine house that pulled the coal cars up the incline for the return trip to Summit Hill on the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway.

The switchback railway was a neat feat of engineering. Built in the early 1800's to move coal to the Lehigh River, it was gravity powered for nine miles from Summit Hill to Mauch Chunk. Originally, mules pulled the cars back to Summit Hill (and then rode down to do it again). Then someone figured out that by starting at the top of Mt. Pisgah, gravity could get the cars back to the bottom of the mountain at Summit Hill. Eventually steam power took over for the mules, with big engine houses at the top of the mountains at each end to pull the cars up the incline to be sent the other direction.

What's really fun is that this railroad is considered the first roller coaster in the U.S. When a bigger railroad was built to move coal to the river, the Switchback RR lost business. So the owners turned it into a tourist attraction, charging riders for the thrill of zooming down the grade (or just using it to travel the 9 miles from one town to the other). At one time, the switchback RR was second only to Niagara Falls in the U.S. for yearly visitors.

After the fun of comparing old photos to current ruins, and spending some time enjoying the view from the top, I headed back to the house. The lake beckoned, so I pulled my lake kayak out of the crawl space and went out for a paddle.

It was a good day.

Tonight we saw Vanilla Fudge at Yoshi's in Oakland for their 50th anniversary tour. The group still had three of the four original members, the fourth one retired.

In his live shows, Ray Wylie Hubbard (Texas musician) does a rendition of his famous hit "Redneck Mother" where he starts out talking about giving advice to young song writers about what is the most important thing to consider in writing songs. He goes through a list of several things that he says are important, but aren't really the key thing in song writing. No, the most important thing to consider in writing songs is think about whether you can get up on stage and sing the same song every night for the next 30 years. Very funny and self deprecating. He goes on and talks about the fact that he's even embarrassed at the success of the song, but that twice a year, as he walks out to his mailbox to collect his royalty check for that song, life is pretty good. He then launches into a lively version of Redneck Mother and every person on the audience is singing along with him at the top of their lungs. Very entertaining.

Stairway to Heaven, Rocky Mountain Way, Redneck Mother, etc., all songs that the artists say they regret writing, but they still cash the checks... [emoji12]

Could you play "Satisfaction" for 52 years?

Bought a new Subaru Outback to replace our 2002 Ford Explorer, which will go to the kids if they want it. Researched cars on the Internet focusing on reliable SUVs with good safety features. Love the Eyesight anti collision features. Got it for a couple hundred under invoice. Took some pushing but they had plenty on their lot, so I knew they'd want to move one. Pick it up later this morning.

Yesterday I played golf in lovely 17C weather in shorts. I won't be playing today...

Enjoy. That's a nice SUV. :)
