what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

Let's see...woke up, had coffee, surfed, joined Mr B at Legion, and got a small loaf of ciabatta bread there. A member who w*rks at a local grocery store brings free bread in on the same day that the Sell By date happens. I guess that makes it "Day Of" bread? It disappears fast!

We came home and made open faced turkey/swiss and ham/swiss sandwiches in the convection oven. I made up some dill mayo for mine. woooooooo :D
What we don't eat by Sunday will go to the birdies.

Mr B had an eye doc appointment and needed a bank run, so I am holding down the fort and listening to 70s music on a digital cable music station. Carly Simon, Doobie Bros, Little River Band, Blood Sweat & Tears, Fleetwood Mac...nice tunes. The station shows pics of the groups during the songs. The clothes and hairdos are just oh so retro cool.

Yesterday I showed an apartment to a prospective tenant. She wants to paint the walls bright yellow but otherwise, I have a feeling she's going to check out. She has a cat, which is a plus in my book :)

Rental market sure is soft around here. I'm not getting many calls, but there are still a few people around who have jobs who can pay the rent. A few......

Today am meeting with my buddy to go eat, then we'll head back to my place to watch "Nowhere Boy" (the new John Lennon biopic) on DVD, and some of our regular BBC TV shows.

That's an encouraging sign. The good tenants tell you about the pets before they sign the lease...
She even asked permission to paint the interior walls, is willing to pay an extra deposit in return for the favor, or will not do it if I say no. I think she means it too. She seems very upfront. If her background checks out I could be onto a good new tenant here.

Did the dog walk, breakfast and surf in the AM. Announced at 1pm that I was going to "start my day" meaning ice removal chores. "What! Yor're starting your day in the afternoon?" I gues this means I am getting the hang of ER.

Free to canoe

I woke up and made this roast beef:

It was perfect. I'm going to make this often.

That really looks good Al. It's getting close to dinner and I had a pickle until DW starts cooking. That roast beef definitely beats a pickle.

VERY yummy looking, TAl

Roast beef will be very different than what is being served today at the Annual Game Feed being held at the Legion. The members who hunt and fish will contribute some of their frozen stash to the cause.
Today's menu will feature Bambi, Thumper, Rocky, and perhaps some Bullwinkle or Smokey. :yuk:

I think I will just stick with the fish...bass, perch, walleye, salmon and pike. I'm not crazy about salmon unless it is smoked. ;)

Thanks Al. That is a terrific blog and I added it to my favorites. Think I'm going to have to try this. Did you have any smoke for cooking at 500 degrees for the first 20 minutes? Curious, what was the weight of your roast and was it done in 50 minutes. :flowers:

At the end of December I resigned from my old job (working part-time). I posted on here how toxic that work environment was. Thank you to everyone who was so supportive.

I took several weeks off and this past week started a new job (just working a few hours here and there), and the difference from my old job is night and day. It's all in the co-workers. Oh, what a joy to work somewhere where people are nice to each other and work as a team!

We may not be FIRED yet, but we are getting closer!

I've spent a great deal of time here on ER while earnestly avoiding starting to work on my taxes.

I've spent a great deal of time here on ER while earnestly avoiding starting to work on my taxes.
I'm preparing to commence seriously considering thinking about earnestly starting to evade working on my taxes.

I was worried about procrastinating, but I'll get to that tomorrow.

6 PM tonight starts our taekwondo black belt test. Candidates only, no spectators. There are approximately 16 candidates-- a few have yet to pass the pushups or the run, but they have six hours left to remedy that situation. Everyone's been training for at least four years (I'm closing in on seven but I've been a black belt for two). The youngest candidate is 10 years old (a Type I diabetic to boot), one mother is participating with both of her teen sons, three others of us are going for our 2nd or 3rd dans.

As black belts we're expected to set the standards for doing forms & kicks. The dojang's owner tells us up front that although he and his instructors have spent years working with us, he knows that some of us will only perfect our forms when everyone else is depending on us to execute them flawlessly as a synchronous team. So that's how he runs the test: peer pressure.

At the start of the first part of the test, each of us candidates is assigned (at least) one monitor to watch our execution. We begin with the simplest of the eight Taeguk forms. We need to do it three times perfectly, and together, before we'll move on to the next one. If anyone's feet or hands are out of position, let alone missing a move or too far ahead/behind, then we start the form over. Since everyone has at least one monitor it's hard to hide your mistakes. It'll probably take us 45 minutes just to build up 3x flawless simultaneous executions of the first form... and then there's just seven forms left. Focus.

At the end of that part of the test (probably about four-five hours) we take a short pizza break. (Some of us more senior candidates have learned to show up on a dose of 800 mg of ibuprofen and to top it off during the break.) Then we begin the second part of the forms test: performing all eight forms flawlessly in sequence. If there's a mistake on the last part of the eighth form then the accomplishment of the first seven forms doesn't count-- we start climbing the ladder all over again. You can imagine what the pressure does to one's focus when we get to the eighth form on the 15th or 20th attempt.

This is the 17th year the dojang has done this test, and it typically takes 6-8 hours. Smaller groups are better but younger kids can be a wild card. (So can ER geezers.) Two years ago I sweated off three pounds, and that was after the pizza with two quarts of water. I figure we'll be wrapping it up at around 1 AM and enjoying an ibuprofen chaser, I'll be showering by 2 AM, and I'll be sleeping shortly after that. I'll spend Sunday stretching... and more ibuprofen. I hear there's some sort of sporting event on TV but I don't think I'll get around to that.

Next week we'll have the public portion of the ceremony for family & friends-- we do the forms, of course, and we follow that up with fancier-than-usual demonstrations of board breaks and brick breaks. At the end of it I'll be wearing a slightly fancier black belt than I am now.

Two years from now I'll be eligible for the 3rd dan test. I'm going to have to think about that one for a while. Martial arts have proven essential for speed & reflexes, to say nothing of flexibility, but it doesn't get any easier.

I'm glad I passed all my qualifiers a couple months ago. My test preps this afternoon consist mainly of taking a long nap...

Walked to our local Chinatown with SO and as we were buying some dim sum to go, the Chinese Dragon came into the store to bring good luck to the business. Much banging of drums and gongs and then firecrackers were let off - then they moved on to the next business. Great fun!

We walked around, ate our dim sum, walked to the edge of the bay and looked at the boats. Were going to go somewhere for coffee but while browsing around Cost Plus Imports, took advantage of the free espresso there. The days outing so far had cost us $3.50 (for the dim sum). Walked home and watched the documentary "Lennon NYC" while eating cheese and drinking a bottle of Trader Joes' 2 buck chuck Cabernet Sauvignon.

Now we're about to have steak slathered with fresh horse radish and more wine.

If I keep up this style of eating, I'll be able to increase my SWR.......

Not much noticeable smoke, but the smoke alarm did go off. I don't remember how much it weighed, but it was the same size as the one in the photo. It was indeed done after 50 minutes. It's been great for snacks, and we got the referenced book from the libe today.

From ipod.

I am trying to eat healthier food. Been frequenting the organic store recently. Not for what is there, but what isn't.

Anyhow....lunch was panfried sole fillet with steamed sweet potato, carrot and ginger, and sauteed kale, garnished with a slice of lemon. No sauce of any kind. Tasty and nutritious! I'm feeling holier than thou!

I had too many veggies so I pulverized them and added some organic low salt chicken broth. That will be soup for tomorrow and the next day.

Kale is delicious but the stems are too woody and give me a tummyache. :nonono: I use only the leaves.

I got two full pickup-truck-loads of free pine firewood from a craigslist ad. I had to do a lot of chainsawing and lifting and driving, but this sure saves tons of money. But someday I'm going to decide I'm too old for this.

Finished closing out the 2010 books on my business. Broke down and started on taxes after that. Didn't finish but made good headway. Shoot me now.

Most recipes I have seen for kale call for it to be parboiled then plunged in an ice bath. Water is squeezed out afterwards and it is then added to whatever it is you are cooking. There were a few recipes that I read only today in the NYT. One was slow-cooked kale and beans and the other was a mushroom and egg casserole with chopped kale.

Don't you worry about creosote buildup using pine for firewood? My brother used to be a chimney sweep, and said most of the chimney fires he heard about were from people burning pine.

Edit: I've been reading up on this (google), and it sounds like pine, properly seasoned, actually has less creosote than hardwoods. I guess the properly seasoned piece is the important part. So, just an old chimneysweep's tale.

Sorry to you people in the snow belt but it was in the mid 70's today in the San Francisco Bay Area. Went for a motorcycle ride. I dodged a speeding ticket. I was going more than I said but substantially less than the said.

We got up to 63 today, so I wore just a sweater and no coat. It was delightful. But, it will drop down below freezing later this week.

Survived the black belt test. It actually went pretty quickly at "only" 5 hours and 45 minutes. Everyone came through, although one or two of them came awfully close to being killed by classmate peer pressure.

I maintained hydration & weight, I didn't permanently injure anything, and my forms are better than ever. I've been on ibuprofen for 24 hours and might keep that up for another day before my legs stop complaining. At least I can roll over in my sleep without waking myself up from the whimpering.

The first black belt test (two years ago) with my daughter was a lot more fun. Camaraderie through shared adversity, a common goal, a new experience. She was under self-imposed pressure to put "black belt" on her college application and I enjoyed the vicarious thrill. This time it was just for me and I knew what I was getting into so the anticipation was far worse than the actual experience. I know I need to keep doing taekwondo for the speed & agility & reflexes, but I'm having a difficult time discerning the value in going higher. That's why I'm writing this down-- so that I can review my thoughts in a couple years when my memories have faded to a rosy glow and it's time to sign up for the 3rd dan test.

Next Saturday we're doing the public ceremony with a demonstration of our forms plus breaking wood & bricks. I'm not big on spinning & agility but it's been suggested that I have the knife hands for 2-3 pieces of wood (inch-thick pine planks), the axe kick for 3-4 pieces, the punch for another 2-3 pieces, and the side kick for four (all done in sequence). We'll follow that with a palm strike for four bricks. I've done those kicks but the hand techniques will be a learning experience...

So... have you told your daughter what she's doing next time she visits?

Right, I get almost no creosote buildup. I clean the chimney myself once a year, and have a real chimney sweep inspect it every few years.
