Whether you agree with his particular policy positions or not, we all should recognize the decades of service this courageous man gave to the USA and the world. Condolences to his loved ones and constituents on their loss.

Hero

The word “Hero” is too easily thrown around in today’s society, but for John McCain’s it is a fitting description.

I did not always agree with John McCain's politics, but I always had the greatest of respect for him as a man. He was a true American hero and patriot and a man of class and honor. May he rest in peace.

I remember when the Vietnam POW's came home on stretchers and in hospital beds. They had been starved, tortured, and their injuries and illnesses had gone untreated. I don't remember McCain specifically, but it was clear these people had been through hell. Many did not survive.

In the mid 1980's, we started taking in large numbers of Vietnamese refugees from the camps - the boat people. San Jose was one of the biggest resettlement destinations. Years later, I attended a function also attended by a retired South Vietnamese army general, living in the local retirement community.

There was some bitterness about the resettlement. Apparently, former members of the Viet Cong and possibly some North Vietnamese military types, including possibly some from the POW camps, may have slipped in as well.

We have been effective at ferreting out and expelling Nazi concentration camp guards that sneaked in as refugees after WWII. I don't recall any mention of expelling former POW camp guards from Vietnam.

For a guy that graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy and supposedly got in more trouble than almost anyone else, he had a remarkable career. He was a steadying force in Congress, which is something we could use more of now.

As a democrat I am really sad about John. He reached across the aisle for the good of his country.

“The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.”

RIP John

McCain was a hero in any time frame, but even more so to have endured years in a POW camp at a time when others actively evaded even serving when called by their country. RIP good sir.

RIP>>>> he is JUST ONE of millions of hero's in this country.

That's a great quote. Who is it from?

He was a man I admired, even when I disagreed with him. A truly great American and honorable man.

Someone who put country first. He was a hero because he acted like one. RIP John McCain.

RIP. A true hero who put his country first.

An ETHICAL man. How sad that such an attribute would limit a political career.

As a former Naval Aviator, all of us junior guys revered the man and wondered if we could have held up half as much as John did in captivity. Thankfully we never had to experience that terrible condition.

An old school politician who put country before party. He will be greatly missed.
