Five Guys Burgers

My last trip to the Midwest I stumbled on a place called Perillo’s that is known for Chicago dogs and sausages but they have a great burger too. I hate places that mistake a huge burger for a good burger.

Red Robin is good for a chain.
If you're good-looking you get unlimited fries.
Haven't been since DW passed away and it was over $50 for 3 burgers a soda a beer and a few of her Cosmos that had to be drunk due to the special sale.☺

We stopped at one in Virginia, I forget where, the only reason was that DW was very hungry. I did get some fries, she got a hamburger, fries and a drink. I was not impressed, the hamburger was tiny, fries not very good, and all was grossly overpriced for the value. We'll never go back.

Five Guys? Skip it. No better than In N Out at twice the price.

I haven't tried the new McDonalds burgers that are "fresh beef." The new app has deals for $1 and $2 sandwiches, but I can't get past the Egg McMuffin, the one menu item that tastes like real food.

Went to one near Valley Forge, PA. Was hiking around the Park all morning so we were quite hungry. I actually ordered the wrong thing and wound up with one with basically every condiment possible on it. It was actually pretty good. The fries were good. Not as good as Freddie's, but like I said we were famished...

In my experience, the hamburger was good, the fries were greasy but the caramel shake made the meal!

OP here. As a clarification, I knew nothing about Five Guys except the hype about being great burgers. They are in an upscale eating area, next to Tucanos Brazilian Grill, across the street from PF Chang's, and around the corner from Bar Louie. All rather upscale chains. So, my EXPECTATION was something more akin to a Red Robin, not Steak n' Shake. My problem for not exploring more before trying, but not a big deal. Try something, don't like it, don't go back. Simple.

As far as being fast food, we waited 15 minutes, so not fast.

As others have mentioned, we usually go to local places, and this just re-enforced that for future picks.

I did out of curiosity, and I couldn’t tell any difference whatsoever between the “new” “fresh” beef Quarter Pounder and it’s predecessor. None.

I Tried 5Gs several years ago. Cracked a tooth on a bone in the meat. Haven't been back since, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it.

No one has mentioned the Midwest chain, Culver's. It's so good.

Come to think of it, we very rarely eat at any fast food places, the time we went to Five Guys was at least four years ago, and I think the last time I was in a McDonald's or similar was at least ten years ago. Part of it is that I can't eat anything with gluten in it so that cuts out most of the menu in those places.

Most often it is Ruby Tuesday's with a coupon (DW likes that place) or less frequently a Longhorn Steakhouse, or Logan's steakhouse only with a coupon, the latter is closer but much too noisy for us. We used to go to the local Outback but then I noticed they consistently fare poorly on Health Dept. inspections and after they were temporarily forced to close the second time for health code violations we stopped going there at all.

One in town here closed up a few months ago. They were good, but pricey.

When in the midwest, White Castle reigns supreme!!

Used to go to White Castle at 2am as a teenager. One can figure out why......

Five Guys is better than your usual McD or Whutaburger. In-n-Out wasn’t anything special, certainly not up to the hype. The Fuddrucker’s chain is good, and even Chili’s burgers resemble a real burger, rather than a “factory burger”...

IMO Fudd has gone downhill... the buns are way to big making it look like you have a bigger burger than you do...

I also do not like them since they will not let me buy a kids meal for my 99 YO mom...

The benefit if In n Out is that it is a good burger for the price... IOW, they are not trying to charge you $10 for a $4 or $5 burger..

Edit to add.... Just went online and WOW... prices are up there... a bacon burger and fries are almost $15!!!! I can go to my favorite Mexican and get fajitas that will make 2 meals for less...

Nothing like a good 5G's double burger with cheese to loosen up the bowels. Yea, I like them a couple of times a year.

The kids love 5G but I find them too greasy.

The adults in our house much prefer Aldi's burgers cooked on the Big Green Egg at home.
They're the best burgers we've found. Cooked however you want, and the BGE somehow requires a beer to operate, so that's always a plus.......

Belly bomber's, only taste really good at 2 am:D ( when you are 20 yo). We have one a quarter mile away. Every once in a while we get a 6-pack. satisfies the urge for for another year or two.

So that's the secret :D

Not a fan of 5 guys.
Love In and Out... but don't do a lot of fast food.... When we do go for a fast food burger, we tend to go for In and Out. The meat is never frozen, fries start the day as potatoes... I'm more likely to get a burger at a local (walkable) place that is not a chain and has great beers on tap.

One of the few times I know I bought something because of a tv ad. Couldn’t tell the difference either. Speaking of never frozen, I think Wendy’s is pretty good. I never could find anything “gourmet” about Red Robin.
