What is your pet peeve of the day?

I suppose I shouldn't try to shoot down people's peeves, but the last few are clearly not given in context.

Rainfall warning: Since Nemo2 is in Canada, I'm guessing it might be this: https://northernontario.ctvnews.ca/northeastern-ontario-under-rainfall-warning-1.4917423

It's not a warning that rain is falling, it's a warning that it will be a LOT of rain, under this critieria: https://www.canada.ca/en/environmen...asts-use/public/criteria-alerts.html#rainfall

This is probably similar to flood warnings in the US.

I suspect Florida gets cold (freeze?) warnings for 30 degrees because of the danger of plant/crop freeze. In Virginia we only get freeze warnings in spring for people to protect their plants. We wouldn't get one in January when it's expected. But Florida rarely freezes so they put out cold/freeze warnings through the winter as needed. Not just for crops, but also for iguanas! https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...iguana-alert-florida-cold-weather/4533510002/

Sudbury is about 240 miles from us, The Soo maybe 375 miles, and Timmins 350 miles....phew..that was close!
That's why I said "might be" since I didn't spend the time to figure out where you are compared to this warning. So it was a different warning. I'd bet heavily it wasn't just because of rain of any amount like you implied.

I'll let you know how it pans out.....I suspect however that our local radio stations, like so many others, just want to create an ongoing atmosphere of 'drama'.

I almost never watch TV, but I did see the local weather report recently. When did forecasters acquire the habit of saying "in the overnight hours"? e.g. - "expect rainstorms in the overnight hours". It seems redundant. Why not just say "expect rain storms overnight"? Fewer words leaves more time for commercials.

Well, and also the article warned of 25-50 mm total rainfall for the entire storm; not for just one day! 50 mm = 1.96 inches. Two whole inches for the entire weather event, possibly over several days? To me that does not really seem like the end of the world.

DH decided to join a political lobbying organization. He made a donation and paid with PayPal. But the PayPal account has my name on it and today the membership card came and it’s in my name!

I never put my name on anything political and I never allow myself to be assigned to any party. And now this group has ME as a paying member!

I’ve contacted the member services department and told them this MUST BE CHANGED. In the meantime, I feel like I have an ugly label on my back.

It’s not that I disagree with this group. It’s that I’m a private person and I’m careful about where my name is used. I won’t even give a review on an Amazon purchase because I don’t like my name out in public.

Arrrrrhhhh!

It's been a week since I emailed this organization. I also tried calling but you have to leave a message and it cut me off before I was done with the info. So I used Twitter and sent them a direct message. That must have gotten their attention because they finally found the email and responded. I asked them to correct this and send me confirmation when it's completed. Also, REMOVE MY NAME from all of their lists!

An update.

It's obvious that they already sold my name off. The mail solicitations have started. Each one comes with a postage paid envelope to send in my subscription or donation. So I cross out the part to put my payment method and write a note to REMOVE MY NAME FROM YOUR LISTS. DO NOT SELL MY NAME TO ANYONE and I send it back to them.

Now this probably gives a good hearty chuckle to anyone who works in the offices of these organizations but it's the only thing I can do about this so I do it.

I know this not the most important thing going on in the world right now. Just a corner view of my sanity while staying at home for 6 weeks and counting!

I don’t think the journalist gets to pick the title anymore. That’s now the job of the marketing department.

to me, "journalist" implies someone who is curious, knows how to compose and ask actual questions that further the story and not an agenda, and will follow and report the story regardless of who or which politician or political party is involved. and that leaves 99% of the media on the outside looking in.

I put this as a peeve awhile back, but I do not see many real journalist online anymore... almost all stories start out with a paragraph and then start putting tweets from a bunch of people that support their pov and maybe, just maybe end with another original paragraph...

Real journalism is dead...

Not really a peeve, but rather a head shake. Had the radio on while preparing breakfast - announcer says "There's a rainfall warning in effect".

Sure...it's raining, but it's rained before; sometimes it's rained quite frequently.

What's next, a 'dark warning' after sunset?

Nemo, remember that the radio station has a large listening area and the warning might be for a different part of their listening area..

We recently had a hail storm warning... but go no rain... however, 20 miles away my friend had his house pounded with hail and will probably get a new roof... BTW, the radio station coverage is probably 100 mile...

You're channeling George Carlin's Al Sleet, the hippy dippy weatherman:

There was a rainfall warning yesterday as 25 mm (an inch) of rain was expected. Of course there was virtually nothing. Just as well, our lakes are nearly overflowing, some would say they are!

And has anyone else noticed that given the roads are almost empty many drivers have seemed to have forgotten how to drive and are using the whole road!!

Calling or responding might get you on more lists. I would just put them in the trash.

My reaction was directed more to the presentation than the possibly pending weather..."it's Ragnarök...OMG!!" :)

Yes. I went out on the highway a few days ago, and it was fairly empty for around here. Almost everyone was flying down the left lane doing 80 in a 55. Usually too crowded for that. Another thing they're doing is rolling through stop signs a lot. And weird behavior like stopping at a green light and figuring out which way to turn.

Ooooh! Thanks for the reminder. It's almost that time of the election cycle for me to send in a $2 cash donation to the candidate a BIL hates the most, in his name, thereby ensuring that he will be bombarded with even more solicitations until the following November.>:D

You, sir, are a despicable scoundrel. :flowers:

And I really appreciate the suggestion, since I have similar feelings about my own BIL. :D

That's funny!

A little rain....no biggee.

I get your annoyance. Everything is a calamity on the news lately. I try not to watch the news much but DH had it on and I overheard an anchor saying that the Dow "tumbled more than 100 points today..." Really? It "tumbled" less than a half of a percent?

Math is just so hard. Especially those darned percentages. And fractions.
