OK, I think its safe to add my name to the list. Been considering this for a number of years - date is 6/2/2017 at age 62. In a way it seems unreal, makes me nervous at times but I'm ready to re-focus on these last years!

I can't believe that I can do it because I've been counting down for what seems like forever. After running the numbers countless ways, we are safe for me to RE.

Approaching the end of my fourth week and man, it's a great feeling NOT to go to work!

Ok, 2017'ers, effectively today is my day, if officially a little later. I now start my accrued vacation days, and on 4/12 I will stop in to the office to turn in my laptop, CC, etc. However, I am w**rking no more, and will put up "I'm retired" messages on the corp phone and e-mail in the morning. It has been 35.75 years to the day. I briefly felt a bit rudderless this morning, but I think I am over it.

Later on I was thunderstruck by a song on the radio that will have to be my theme song for a while. As the Eagles so magnificently put it -

Congrats! Looks like we both picked the same April 7th job finish / ER start line, although you beat me age-wise by 6 months. At least for myself the joy and freedom gained from voluntarily walking away from a well paying, comfortable (if not rewarding) job with good benefits long before the crutch of SS kicks in qualifies as ER. I was ready (emotionally, if not quite financially) to retire early(er)4 years ago but a mother rapidly succumbing to dementia and loss of eyesight led me to reconsider selling out and moving to Panama. Instead, I "re-evaluated" my life and left my job of 28 years working for a mega-company I no longer respected. After decompressing for a couple of months I accepted a similar position to work for a family owned company in a much healthier environment. These last 4 years I maxed all saving opportunities and paid off all debt including the mortgage while I cared for and comforted my Mother. Sadly she passed away late last year but left me with the opportunity and ability to join the FIRE class of '17.

Unfortunately I hesitated and delayed ER several more months until a recent heart attack reminded me where my priorities needed to be. I'm new to the class and still have much to learn but I'm happier and healthier than I've been in years!
