I fully intended to retire June or July of 2017 when I I'm going to take partial SSA. But last Thursday I got another temperamental post from my boss. Or should I say xBoss. Took me about 20 minutes to decide that I really am done. So Friday morning I texted her my letter of resignation. Here it went:

Thank you for two wonderful years of employment. However I have elected to seek other opportunities and so I will not be returning when the office reopens February 1st. I wish you and the office well (it closed for 2 wks before mandatory 40+ (aka: 45+) for tax season & I'm using those 2 wks as my 2 wk notice)

Being self-employed, it's kind of hard to know when you actually "retire" as there's always little projects on the go! However, I decided to say it out loud this week on Facebook and announce that I was officially calling myself "retired" from my so-called "day job" that people associate me with. I will continue with art-related projects and the occasional graphic design job for a friend etc., but only when I feel like it.

I turn 56 at the end of this month, and I did my last real job last May, so I guess in retrospect I retired a few months ago - I just didn't know it yet!

PS. My first project is to take one photo per week in 2017 of something I always said I would do "when I retired". I label them "Retirement Week 1", "Retirement Week 2" etc. Will see if I can get to have 52 at the end. Some are simple (like reading the NY Times on Sunday, or reading a fiction book from the library), and others will be more challenging (like getting my piano playing chops back to when I was young).

These sound like good reasons for delaying. My date is in September because I turn 62 which bumps up my pension. But I also want to fully fund my retirement accounts this final year and save some more cash to start retirement with a new car.

Yes, hiking is in the cards for me. I'm starting my thru hike attempt of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) on April 9th. It will take roughly 5 months if I can make it all the way. I'm very excited about it. I've never done anything like this before and view it as an adventurous way to transition into my retirement life.

Well, today is the day! I'm due in Medical in 30 minutes for my exit physical and then it's on to HR for my exit brief and to drop off my badge and then I am done! It took a lot of hand wringing and prayer to get here but now I am so ready to go and start the next phase of my life. Dinner tonight with 14 of my retired friends to celebrate. Life is good!

I retired today, right on time. My regional mgr took me out to lunch today, we had cake and champagne, lots of kind words and a few presents and, yeah, I shed a few tears. 25 years for megacorp and 30+ years working post-college.

Now the adventure begins!!
