What did you do today? 2017 version

What did I do today? Commuted for the last time! Today is my last day in the office.
Wow that's wonderful... how was the commute?

My three day a week semi retirement and a vacation week allowed the Mrs and I to tackle the garage. It apparently only had a primer coat and was in miserable shape. Holes here and there, dirt and the tape (between drywall sheets) is failing and it is a pain to pull off the old put in some new fiberglass tape and carefully sparkle. Slow and messy but once done it looks awesome.

After not practicing regularly since May, I stepped onto my yoga mat this morning. Some observations after a summer of whitewater kayaking/rafting:
- overall, I am stronger.
- core strength is very much improved
- shoulder flexibility is better
- lower back, hip, and hamstring flexibility is terrible!

As the seasons change, so do my activities. I'll do less paddling but more cycling, hiking, and yoga. My challenge will be to loosen up my lower half without loosing too much of the core strength.

Got two crowns on the two dental implants that were in progress. Done!

Total cost of everything for these two dental implants was $7,811 (average $3,905 each). This included surgery, prescriptions, crown, and 3 root canals that were involved in locating the source of pain. No bone graft was required.

Worth every cent to me. Still, I'm glad we have a bull market so that I don't have to feel as bad about the cost.

Drained, scrubbed, refilled, changed filters of hot tub. Hit start button of roomba. Now off to the coffee shop.

Don't wear yourself out.

Yep. Did not even bend down, tapped it with my toe.:D

I do not have one nor have looked into getting one, but am surprised that it even has to be turned on. Doesn't it have a mode where it will run automatically every so often?

And then, when it fails or dies of old age, it should send out a message to your phone, saying something like "I am dying. Please buy my replacement".

Or there can be an option where it will send in an order to Amazon for a new one to save you the hassle.

PS. I don't think it can dust the shelves, or the blinds, right? Is there any machine other than a robot that can do these tasks?

Today would have been my parents 70th Wedding Anniversary. Mom is in no shape to leave the house. I didnt even want to tell her it was her anniversary, A) she probably wouldn't know what I was saying or B) she would have become upset. So I went to the flower shop, bought 4 bouquets of flowers and went to the cemetery to visit my dad, I then lost my cell phone someplace, but went home anyway to give mom 2 bouquets of flowers, and the 4th one I gave to the bride. She called the cell phone while i went back to the cemetery. I found it.:). When I returned all sweaty and hot, mom was sitting on the couch all smiles and alert. Im convinced a higher authority was with her. It gave me the encouragement to face the rest of the day.

Went to dermatologist for skin check- two suspicious moles dug out. Probably the youngest person in waiting room by at least 20 years. Lots of bandaged noses in the group. Now off to lunch and pick up some woodworking supplies

Dunno, never RTFM.

Today we sold my wife's 1995 Cadillac De Ville. After putting some money into it this year, it finally turned out the head gasket was shot.
The repair would cost over 2K, and the car was only worth $400!
Anyhow, she now has a brand new Mazda CX-5 with a 7 year warranty. She is being dragged into the 21str century. The bells and whistles on the car are amazing.
Tomorrow I am going to pick up a car for myself from Enterprise Car Sales.

Beautiful weather today. Drove up into the mountains and hung out at a cidery on their deck with a flight of different ciders and a cheese plate. Came home the long way on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Signed up for Medicare on line this morning. This afternoon I dug out my Lionel electric train my Dad bought for me on my 1st birthday almost 65 years ago. I would have been 22 days old on my first Christmas. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work. Not sure what to do with it now. It would probably cost a fortune to get it running.
Hey, this was my 500th post, only took 11 years. At that rate i will probably be dead before I reach 1000 posts.

I don't think I will live to 100 like some people expect to, but there's a good chance of me getting to 76. Why is it not the case with you?

I see what you're doing here....trying to prompt him into replying, and thus increasing his post count now, so that he reaches 1,000 before his demise......very smooth.

I bow hunted in the morning and built a small knife. I actually cut the steal and made the handles from a pallet lathe.

Hurricane prep stage four. Second generator, electric cooler unit (insulin needs to be kept cold).
Seeing to get some prescriptions ahead of schedule.
Will move boat to car port.

Khan, I see you are in the mandatory evacuation zone now for Lee County (the barrier islands). Get the hell out of Dodge. I hope everything stays dry and stable, but make sure you and your family are safe.

I sure hate to hope this thing hits more on the east coast than the west, but at this point it's every ER for themselves. Good luck.

Had an amazing day yesterday. Had the day off w*rk so DW and I decided on a small road trip.

Got up and left early. Hit a cafe and got a breakfast sandwich and cappuchino each. Then drove down to the north shore of Lake Erie. Passing all the tobacco fields, orchards, farm stalls and wineries along the way. The air was crisp and the sun was strong and a lot of the sumac has already started to change colour.

Spent the morning driving along the shores of Erie, stopping at various deserted beaches and then stopped at one of the little port towns at our favorite beach cafe. Had fresh perch on a bun and fries while we sat on the pier and watched the fishing fleet returning in harbor.

On our way home we stopped at a German supermarket in the city and got smoked pork chops and their store made sauerkraut. Went home and had a nap. Later I grilled up the pork chops on the BBQ and we had them with the sauerkraut and a nice Welsh cheddar cheese. For dessert DW had a small piece of cherry streusel and I had three fingers of a black strap molasses rum.

Semi-retirement at its best.

Busy day. About a month ago we had bought a new ceiling fan at the local big-box store to go on the screened-in porch to replace the one that works fine but DW doesn't like because it has a cracked cover over the light bulb. That cover has been replaced twice but it keeps cracking because of temperature variations. We were also going to buy a new kitchen ceiling light because DW doesn't like the one that is there. She had trouble making up her mind about which one she wanted and it got put off.

A week ago we went back, she picked out a light, and we made arrangements to have them installed. I'd do it, but I've developed some mild balance issues so I think the wiser course is to suck it up and pay someone else to maybe fall off the ladder. They say the installer will call in a day or three and we thought it was all set. Days go by and we don't hear anything. Today I spend 30-40 minutes on the phone going through their interminable phone menus trying to get an actual live human being on the phone to explain what is going on and when, BTW, can we expect to have this stuff installed? Finally I get some guy I can barely understand and he wants me to call back because "I already have a customer". I say, "Well, I'm a customer" and he hangs up. By now I am thoroughly frustrated and PO'd, and just pack up all the stuff and the receipts, and take it back to the store for return. Just because they can't be bothered to answer the dang telephone. Isn't that Business 101? Answer the phone? Anyway, scratch one $500 sale.

We drive 10 minutes down the road to a local electrical/light store that's been there for all the 15 years we've been living here and order a different ceiling fan for the porch. They actually answer the phone. I saw it happen. DW is still undecided about the kitchen light but assuming the fan install goes well we'll buy the light from there.

Installed a replacement light fixture on the back of the house to replace the one that DW has been wanting me to replace for oh, about the last 12 years. This is perhaps not a good idea, because it then instills the thought that if she nags long enough, it'll work. But the old one was, even by my standards, looking pretty scrungy.

Surrendered to identity theft gremlins and froze my and DW's credit at all three credit bureaus. Burned an effigy of Equif**k after sticking a few pins in it.

Just picked up my new to me 2016 Hyundai Accent. This completes car replacement.
We went from a 1998 Cadillac and a 2003 Hyundai to a 2017 Mazda CX-5 and the 2016 Hyundai Accent. It iis nice to have cars we do not have to worry about:dance:

The weather here is the most gorgeous ever, for some reason. Today's temperatures were in the 80's, but with low humidity under 50%, blue skies, bright sunshine, and a pleasant little breeze. Most years we do not have super nice weather like this until October.

We spent the afternoon driving around and enjoying the sunshine and blue skies, after an unusually rainy summer.

The calm before the storm?

I sure hope not! But we have been preparing in a low key way, just in case. We got our prescriptions renewed, got plenty of cash, and filled the gas tank of my Venza to the top. We talked about what we would need to do before evacuating, and which route we would take. Any route through west Louisiana or Texas is no good due to Hurricane Harvey.

We could probably be on the road evacuating in a couple of hours if need be.

I know, that probably sounds like overkill, but we tend to be pretty cautious. Frank remembers Hurricane Betsy back in 1965, that wasn't supposed to come to New Orleans but did. And I remember how the elderly suffered here after Katrina, and to be honest we are not as young as we used to be.

So, if Irma surprises us and does not make the turn this weekend, we'll just go on a vacation up north, maybe to Missouri.

Arkansas has some nice places to stop on the way, too! We could go to Hot Springs.

I know, I know, I am SUCH a chicken. Cluck cluck.

We'll wait and see if it turns, before we even think of leaving. Predictions of hurricane directions have improved dramatically since 1965. Still....

cluck cluck cluck.....

Good looking birds.

Stay safe everyone!

I left the high-country boonies and drove back down to the hot valley. We had some business in town. Will go back up to cool country in a week.
