I have been busy playing with my new set of LFP cells. These are Headway 38120 format cells. They are only 8Ah each, but can push 200A continually hence are big and heavy for their capacity. The energy density is 1/2 that of the common LFP cells. They came in a package of 48 cells in a 24V assembly for an unknown industrial application.

I don't have the need for this power (you can drain the cell in 2.5 min and charge them in 5 min), but they come in an industrial assembly that is rugged and convenient to use. In measuring the cells, I found that there was an intermittent connection in a balance lead, and had to take the assembly apart to measure each individual cell. So far, they all measure higher than 8Ah. Perhaps it's the loose connection that caused the assembly to be pulled out of service. I still need to check each of the cells out, because one weak cell can ruin the performance of the whole pack of 48 cells.

I will put everything back when I am through. Everything is bolted together, hence the disassembly is not destructive.

The $/kWh is not that good, but the intention is to use the rugged industrial assemblies as is for a solar app I am planning.

That sounds like a fun project.

Out of curiosity, I looked into how much to transport a trawler coast-to-coast. Could not find out any info. Perhaps it's so expensive that it is just not done. The problem is the beam width. A 44' trawler may be wider than 14'. You will need wide load escort and all that.

Yes, Robbie would blow some dough if he wanted to take his boat to the Great Loop. The journey going through the Panama Canal will also blow a lot of fuel.

Dunno about Alaska as it's too far away. But just going up to the Straight of Georgia (Vancouver BC) would be really nice. It's beautiful there.

I wonder if many people do this. Cruising the open ocean seems a bit more hazardous than doing the Great Loop.


PS. A boat adventure is something I would like to do. However, I get sick as a dog from motion sickness. And my wife is afraid of the water, unless she's on a gigantic cruise ship. So, RV'ing is the only thing we can do.

Yeah the loop is a long river cruise, gulf cruise, intracoastal and back though lakes and locks. Not a lot of rough water.

I'mma gonna start out slow. Do the Delta thing, out to the bay Sausalito thing for a couple years before I do the Monterrey thing ya know -

Yeah, and everything is in slow motion. These things don't go fast at displacement hull speeds. To get this from Alameda to Stockton will take 8 hours and 50 gallons of fuel.

DD#1 and husband finally gave up waiting for the used car market to improve and went car shopping today. They found a 2020 Camry at a slightly better than sky-high "market" price at the local Avis car sales lot. Avis claims these cars are at wholesale prices, and they do appear to me to be priced at the trade-in value of the car rather than full retail. Avis posts the prices of all vehicles and does not negotiate.

While they were doing the paperwork to purchase the car, an employee drove it to a state inspection station (an annual requirement in TX) so they could complete the registration. Before the papers were all signed, the finance lady got a call from the driver saying he'd been rear-ended and the damage to the car was serious.

DD and SIL were immediately suspicious this was some sort of scam but said the finance lady (who was actually the location manager) was very apologetic and said she wanted to make things right. She asked if there was another car they would consider as a replacement. There was another 2020 Camry that was a different color and was priced higher, apparently because it had fewer miles and was in better condition. They had not seen this particular car on the lot prior to deciding to purchase the now wrecked vehicle. The manager said if they wanted it she would sell it to them for the same price. Turns out they actually liked this more expensive car better than the one they first chose and, after a test drive, agreed to buy it.

DD still wonders if there was something fishy about the whole deal, maybe because they never saw the wrecked car. If there was something going on I can't figure it out, and told her to stop worrying about it and enjoy her "new" car.

Whenever I've purchased a car I've had a concern about having an accident driving it off the lot. Glad it didn't happen to DD - but it was close!

We bought a Maxima from Enterprise several years ago--lasted close to 250,000 miles before I was ready to trade it in. Rental places seem to take good care of their cars.

Oh snap!!!! Last year when Sohnjay was only working 1/2 hours SF decided to tow cars with 5+ parking tickets. He had 5. And a red envelope. Asked for time to pay and the request was lost in the paperwork. So I paid. He didn't know and thought his appeal worked. Well I took in yesterday's mail and he has a check from SF Comptroller. Sheesh. Another dud "snowstorm".

We got maybe 2 inches of snow followed by another 1/2" of freezing rain/ice. It took two or three passes of the snow blower to clear, one or two to break up the ice coating and then the last pass to move it. There were parts, mostly on the sidewalk, that even that wouldn't clear so shoveling was the only way.

After doing that we came back in and took about a two hour nap.

Less than two inches here. About 15 minutes with a shovel to clear the driveway and sidewalk. Nothing much, but the first time I've shoveled snow in nearly a year, so it actually felt good.

spent the day on some land my son owns along the river. I went for the day to hike and just to be outside since the weather has been so nice. I'm hoping to find a moose shed but found these on his land. For me to find the set side by side is rare for me. There is one large bull I seen while I was in there. I'm hoping this is the year to find one on his.

Went out to the boat and wired the battery line to the tie point and the tie point to the helm. Glued in the helm cover support. Measured the bimini top drop points, going to move the main support back for easier access to the boat and also to raise the height.

Mostly finished building a sauna... in a 6x12 enclosed trailer.

Got rid of hot tub some years ago, decided on a sauna, but no good place in the house.
Bought enclosed trailer, insulated walls and ceiling. Built a divider at 8' from head end, with hinges for wall and door, so it can be opened. Built 7'6" x 24" wide bench which is hinged. Thus can be lowered. This setup allows the trailer to be used as a trailer, or sauna. The heater is free standing, thus easily removable, with some hooks to wall to keep from falling over if nudged.

The last several days had 10F and 20F temperatures and snow over 8". Running the sauna at 170F, the snow on roof did not show any signs of melting, so insulation method is a success.
Great when a plan works out.
