I switched my cell service from AT&T yesterday and am now with Comcast (via Verizon) for $13 a month.

I'm thinking of keeping the old phone, but don't want to pay for monthly service as it will rarely be used. Just a back up, just in case... I just want it to have a phone number, and a few minutes.

So I guess I need a SIM card, and that will also mean I have to buy some minutes with it? I couldn't find anything for less than $30 at Wal-Mart.

Has anyone done this, and who'd you use? Thanks!

Do the minutes expire due to inactivity?

When I was with Tracfone, I notice if unused, the minutes expire. Thus, in effect, not officially paying for monthly service, but pretty much a buy more minutes to keep service active plan that amounted to almost the same thing.

Several carriers have pay-go plans, I use H2O wireless, they use ATT's network. Minimum amount is $10 every 90 days, unused minutes carry over as long as you reload at or before 90 days.

You can get a phone number from google without needing a 2nd phone.
