Google Earth's standalone app (i.e. not in a browser) for Windows is telling me "detected an error when trying to authenticate". When I click yes for the error report it offers, it opens a browser and points to a page that does not exist (404 error). The app was working for me last week. There's scant info online about this problem and I've tried the recommended fixes without success. Is the app working for others?

Works fine for me. I would delete (uninstall) it and download a fresh copy.

There was talk about a pole reversal?;)

Hope it's resolved itself.

What if the Google app is working fine, but it's the Earth that has stopped working?

Even though the OP hasn't been back, perhaps we were a bit remiss in not mentioning that as good as Google Earth is, their Google Earth Pro is even better.

Google Earth Pro used to be quite expensive while Google Earth was always free. But the cost was eliminated a couple of years ago and now the Pro version is freely available.

A few reasons to switch to Pro are that you can
  • use Move Maker to create your own media
  • print screenshots and images in high resolution
  • easily map GIS information, allowing you to import much larger vector files for image overlays
  • map multiple points at once
  • access demographic, graphic, and traffic data overlays
etc.

Even if the free GE does all you need, I think the Pro version is worth upgrading to just for the possibility of enhancing your abilities if you ever need to.

Mine works fine I just checked. I have Google Earth on my iPhone as well as on my computer at home. I would like a Google Earth Pro App for my phone but doesn't look like there is one available.

I should have been aware. I just assumed we were speaking of GE Pro... that is the version I have.

Fascinating that with GE we can basically go anywhere on earth, but the first thing most of us look at is our house [emoji4]

Neither the repair nor reinstall options solved the problem. Since login is the failure point I'd guess something's amiss with the Earth server.

You are not alone...
While it works great for me, if you google:

"google earth error 404",

you'll find more solutions than there are problems. About 2.3 million hits.

Good luck:flowers:

Yes, ironically Earth's error reporting system has an error in it, hence the frequent reports of a 404 (page not found) error.

Earth is/was a great program though, as is true for too much other software, they "improved" it to death such that the older versions worked better for me.

When you first start using it, they want your email. Are you currently logged into to Google with the same email?
