Low Carb Diet

I have been known to do vodka, soda water, ice, and a sugar-free flavored sweetener like Mio. Sort of like a grape or cherry crush with a kick. And no, I don't have any worries about artificial sweeteners!

I lost 25 lbs doing low carb back in early 2016, mainlining Diet Coke the entire time. I felt great, and felt like I finally found the way of eating that worked best to fight my lifelong battle with carbs. Then DH got sick, and I gained it back--but I'm sort of shocked that I have returned to it and have lost 10 lbs, at a time in my life when it would be easy to just lose myself in junk food.

I'm at 6 days in now and enjoying meat! Just pulled ribs off the smoker, and pulled pork in a couple more hours. Have to say this time is just like last year when I lost 20#, I eat until I'm full and not hungry until much later.
BTW Al, that steak is done to perfection!

I did medifast and lost 30 lbs it was disgusting, but one thing it did teach me is that your body burns carbs and protein equally. If you don't eat enough protein, it eats muscles, this is what happens to lots of people who start working out and instead of "gaining" muscle, they instead are losing it. When your body runs out of carbs, it eats fat.. ding ding ding.. ie why low carb diets tend to work.

I don't like traditional low carb as its often filled with cheese and fat. I've now been doing a modified Paleo diet, I really enjoy a lot of the recipes, lots of ways to get veggies in with just a little healthy fat so its not all crap.

But fat isn't bad for you anymore! That's the glory of low carb.

It's all about the weight loss. Whatever helps you to achieve that, just do that! We've done everything from zero-carb-meat-only to drinking straight olive oil in an attempt to trick the body into satiety (which was cool except for the bowel impaction). Also tried cabbage soup and splitting meals and way too many other things to remember. In the end, just counting calories works every time I do it.

Speaking of things that work, here's an insanely high carb diet of junk food that works. Doesn't even raise your cholesterol! Not that I'm recommending it...

I’ve been reading about Tom Brady’s low carb diet. https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/...average-day/8xk7FQkkya4giw7vhnNq9I/story.html

My diet is similar - but my results are different.

Yeah, I've read about Brady's diet too, and he is eating/drinking some things that are definitely not endorsed by any of the mainstream low-carb diet folks. 12-25 big glasses of electrolyte-enhanced water daily? Eat alkaline foods and stay away from acidic foods? I have no idea where he got these ideas from, but it wasn't any of the low carb diet principles I'm familiar with. He does seem to emphasize mostly whole foods otherwise, which is fine.

I read that alkaline foods help more in reducing inflammation. Probably why he does that. But as far as the electrolyte overload - who knows. Popular mechanics thinks it’s ‘silly’

That is difficult IMO. I means essentially no fruit, and limited portions of most vegetables. I think it is a very healthful diet, but tough. Congratulations.

WOW! I keep it under 100 g a day and sometimes that is hard.

Just for comparison, before I went 'lower carb' I was probably consuming 300+ g a day. In that sense I am much closer to Mr. Trombone than I am to my old carb count.

I average about 50 to 60 net carbs daily. With fiber included, I am probably 70 or 80 grams of carbs. But I don't really track it (I had to look it up for this post). I just eat the same thing most days. For lunch a salad with veggies, a protein and homemade dressing with extra olive oil. Dinner is broiled chicken, meat or fish with two green veggies and butter or olive oil. I rarely eat breakfast, but when I do it is an egg and maybe a 1/2 an avocado with olive oil. I have a small square of 86% dark chocolate twice a day. When I have a snack it is small piece of fruit or nuts or cheese. Seems to work. :)

My casual observation is that Tom Brady is reasonably healthy despite, not because, of the advice of his personal fitness “guru”.

Sounds like a purveyor of woo to me...

And we're all celebrities here, too.

More important to avoid sugar
Better than keeping carbohydrates below 100g daily is to avoid white flour, sugar, and fructose as ingredients - do that and keep carbohydrates below 10g daily.

True, but the last time I checked nobody has written a book titled - Is LOL! Wrong About Everything? :D

Nor have not seen ReWahoo on afternoon talk shows blaming vaccinations for the increase in Post Nasal Drip syndrom.

Keeping an eye on electrolytes and really supplementing sodium, potassium, and magnesium to keep you feeling good is a big trend these days in the keto community (the folks keeping to under 20 g carbs). So Brady's approach, while on the high end, is not really that different from the "ketorade" a lot of folks drink. (and I'm guessing he sweats a lot, so he really needs to replace those electrolytes)

I had an experience with the keto supplements. A word to the wise, know what your doing before sucking down a couple grams of potassium. 😁

Ditto with Magnesium!!!

I looked for this in a grocery store. Only found the 70% stuff. Carbs were through the roof. Is the 86% an online only kind of thing?

The traditional diet I have been on is around 250g carbs. 250g has virtually no pasta, bread or rice. With the 100 gram diet, I am decreasing or eliminating:
  • grits
  • fat free coffee creamer
  • sweet potatoes
  • only having a tiny bit of occasional potato
  • many sauces
  • beer
  • white wine
  • mixed veggies (corn and peas)

The above list are things I had in moderation with the 250 g diet. I don't know how you keep it to 60 grams.

By not eating any of those things. :)

Lots of meat, lean or fat. Lots of eggs. Lots of butter. Some cheese. Some nuts. Some dairy. And, if you are a person who likes vegetables, lots of veggies with low net carbs (carbs minus fiber)--leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, avocado, etc.

There was no one who lived a higher carb diet than I used to. I subsisted quite happily (if fatly) for years on bread and cereal. But when you go very low carb, after the first few days of cravings, they basically go away. And you can be more satisfied on fewer calories when the bulk of your calories come from fat and protein.

Is the purpose of the diet to have no carbs or is it to just lose body weight?

If you are losing body weight (or maintaining your desired weight) with current carbs, what is the point of lowering carb consumption?

Aldi sells good chocolate.

I occasionally eat Aldi's Moser Roth 85% Dark Cocoa. The container has five bars (25 g each) which have 9 g of carbs (some of which is apparently fiber).

They are $2 IIRC.

Less hunger on same calories, lower blood pressure, lower trigylcerides, better cholesterol numbers, better insulin control, possibly even lessening your chance of getting Alzheimer's (which is sometimes referred to as Type 3 Diabetes).

Sugar is going to be the tobacco of the 21st century.
