What do you think about tattoos?

Three people that I have known over the past 20 years have half body tattoos, upper torso. Those three people also have some form of atrophy involving their muscles and joints. Coincidence? I don't know but they were perfectly healthy for years then things went south while in their middle 40's.

I had permanent makeup done to my eyebrows 25 years ago. Otherwise known as a tattoo. Always looked nice and has faded over time to a grey to match my hair. Ha!!

I wouldn't have a tattoo, but I don't care if anyone else chooses to.

I don't have any and don't plan on it. I *almost* got one in my early days of the Air Force but I was too drunk (thankfully!) to give consent. My DW has a couple, but are not visible under most circumstances. :)

I personally don't have anything against them, but I think with the proliferation of them...they just aren't that original anymore. Plus, I have seen good friends pay for an expensive tattoo, but complain that they have to get a second j*b to pay the bills. Oye.

So, how about beards? :)

I have one. I like it. I may add to it, but it's about the size of my palm and in a place where you only see it if I have my shirt off. I like to think of it as my permanent reminder of temporary insanity.

As to some of the responses here, like I told my mom after I got it, I think if people are going to judge me as "vulgar and low-class" because of a relatively small tattoo, I probably don't want to hang out with those people anyway. If they're going to judge me on something so trivial, they'll find some other reason why I'm vulgar and low-class otherwise because they're trying to.

Also, my wife likes mine, and I don't think anyone in the world would describe her as either vulgar or low class. Hers is the only opinion I really care about, and she met me after I'd had my tattoo for about 8 years.

Nowadays almost everyone has them. I don't have any so I guess I'm in the minority now.

Funny coincidence, just saw this cartoon this morning. To answer your question, I don't like them. Most of the ones I see are not well done, look like they
were done by little kids. If someone wants one, a discrete one here and there is maybe okay. But they are not for me.

I don't like tatoos, but really hate body piercings, especially nose and tongue. What the heck are they thinking?

Oh Ya! Those things in the ear lobes I can't stand to even look at.

I think less of the person.
I think they are stupid: how will your tattoos look when you are 70+?
I think they are waste of money. Money that could be sent into their IRA.

Not for me but I can understand a small tattoo on someones arm representing something like their military service or even their life's work. However these "art" tattoos all over someones arms/legs/body look awful to me. Some are just beyond ridiculous, IMO. I just don't get it.

no tattoo

I have met a few people who refuse to believe I was an active duty Marine because I do not have any tattoo's. When the subject of being a Marine came up they said "show me your tattoo's". When I said that I didn't have any they litterally told me I was a liar and was never in the service. Then I pulled out my retired USMC id card and they just walked away.

I'm not a fan. My DW, DD and DS all have them. DW has the theater faces on her shoulder and a lone wolf on her upper outer thigh. DD has "believe" on her wrist. DS is an active duty Marine and has a few. None visible and all USMC motivational.

I like looking at tattoos on others, but wouldn't dream of getting one myself. Some folk look good with them, and wear them well. The tats on others don't seem quite so well thought-out.

As for me, I can't think of any design or lettering that I would want on my skin permanently. What if I really, really want something but decide, a few years down the line, that it doesn't quite do it for me in the way that it used to? For this reason, I prefer to display my proclivities with T-shirts. It's much easier to change a T-shirt than a tattoo. Having said that, I'm not even overly driven to advertise to the world through a T-shirt the kind of things I'm into, though I do own a few rather cool cat T-shirts

But seriously, if I'm really into something, I'll read about it, learn about it, and discuss it with others. For the most part, I don't feel the need to get the T-shirt or the tattoo, or even the button. This has probably saved me a lot of money over the years.

However, cat T-shirts are an exception to that. I'm just a sucker for kitties. Definitely no tattoos though.

Second possible exception. When, one day, I begin my RV'ing odyssey, I can see myself getting a few choice shirts from various places I pass through. I've seen plenty of "Where the Heck is Wall Drug?" bumper stickers, but I wonder if they make a T-shirt for that? Still, as before, no tats though!

............I'm a member of a very uppity country club, we have members who play for the local NFL team, so this place is exclusive. I'm one of the better golfers at the club and generally highly regarded by most of the membership, my wife even more so. I'm an equity shareholder so I get to vote on all issues.........
I'm honored that you'd choose to hang with us.

I do laugh when a criminal with face and neck tattoos is wanted by police and they show a picture on TV, like anyone will not be found with the specific identification all over visible to all.

I do not want a tattoo and do not admire them on others. That said, if somebody else wants one, that is their business.

Similarly I choose to not color my (white) hair, and although that is not everyone's choice, I would hope that others would regard that as my business as well.

Temporary tattoos are available, and I find it mildly interesting that they aren't more popular than they are, among those who like tattoos.

+1, Also just out of curiosity how much do tats cost ? Again seems like money poorly spent but I do get a kick out seeing tats that were poorly done or words misspelled, which pretty much reinforces my feelings about tats and those who sport them.

I hate them, but generally keep it to myself. Since I don't like them, I don't have any. Everyone else has a choice and it really doesn't affect me.

Dear Cousin, the ultimate spendthrift, has a new one every time I see her. She's one of those adults into Disney, so they are generally Mickey Mouse or the like. They must be from the discount tattoo parlor because most look like they were applied with a blunt Sharpie. One was upside-down, which I think is a recent trend so the wearer can read what they say. I saw an article about tats where a well-known artist who specializes in fixing bad tats was interviewed. He said those would be what he will specialize in fixing in ten years.

Funny SNL fake commercial on tattoo removal (sorry it comes with a real commercial up front):

All these replies make me want to get a tat.

Maybe a little black dot. People will wonder what the little dot means.

Yeah, that'll be cool!

Hehe. But it might mean you were a cancer patient who underwent radiation therapy. You might have two, one on your front and one on your side.

DW has these (15-year BC survivor!). She said each dot hurt like hell, and can't imagine what getting a sleeve must feel like.

Hear hear!

Don’t have any, but don’t care whether others have them. If my DH had one it wouldn’t bother me. Heck, I might have even liked it.

Where I grew up extensive tattoos were an indication of high rank (Polynesians) so it occasionally jars me slightly to see a large body area tattoo and realize that, of course, that person is not Polynesian. No multicolored tattoos in Polynesia.

I guess people like to criticize other people for what they perceive as wasting money. I like to criticize people for criticizing what strangers choose to spend their own money on. :D

BTW, my ears are pierced.

Well one or two? Maybe they're for binary purposes?

Don't like them. If not acquired in military service there was always a high correlation with number of tattoos and criminality. I could speculate on what the correlations are today but that would be impolite. Two DS's have no ink. Two DD's each have a couple of small tattoos. I point out to them that many of my generation do not like them. Some jobs will not accept applicants with visible tattoos is what DD's have told me.

LOL...I saw a guy at the Sprint store w/the lips on his neck. I double take and asked a question. Maybe he has more work planned?

Millenials (?) in Portland are awash in visible tats. It is almost unusual to see one without one. Doesn't bug me as much as it used to.
