NFL: 2019 Season

It's been done in the past and happens more often than you probably realize.

More likely the 49ers don't need their franchise tag for any other position, and want to retain control over Gould's services. They could pay him a lot this year, or could still sign and trade him.
franchise tag greatly favors the team over the player, it is in effect a one year guaranteed contract, with no commitment beyond the current season.

I am amazed when teams give players 6 year contracts, when probability is few players even play 16 games, much less 6 years of 16 games.

Chiefs. Finally bit the bullet after Katrina. Gonna 'cheer for the Chiefs.' Still have a twinge for the Saints.

heh heh heh -

I listened to Buffalo-Jets. Buffalo offense in 1st half was offensive. 3rd quarter not much better... but the mantra at half time was as bad as Buffalo played (4 first half turnovers), to only be losing 6-0 at halftime (Jets botched an extra point on a pick 6) was actually good- clean up the turnovers and the Jets offense wasn't going to do much.

It was 16-3 at end of 3rd quarter and Buffalo scored 2 4th quarter TDs to win.
If Devon Singletary is available in your fantasy leagues pick him up.

Buffalo opened play with 19 straight called pass plays (qb ran a few of them).
The running game took over in 4th quarter even when we were losing. It was all Singletary in 2nd half until final 2 minutes, then Frank Gore came in with 2 minutes left to drain clock.

John Brown and Cole Beasley are significant upgrades at WR from 2018.

Buffalo had the 2nd overall defense in 2018, that was with getting blown out in weeks 1 and 2 last year, this year the defense appears to be better, and I look forward to us trying to stop the NE ground game later in season.

The NFL's 100th Regular Season begins tonight, with GB vs. CHI.

How about a little trip down memory lane on this 100th anniversary...One of my favorite quotes from George Blanda who played until he was age 48.....
After last year people came up to me and said, 'George, how do you do it? What's your secret?'" Blanda wrote for SI. "Word got out that I had a special diet, that I didn't drink or smoke. One 'insider' said that I was taking hormones, and that was why I was able to play so many games at my ripe old age. Well, there is no secret. My special diet consists of the same things I've been eating ever since I grew up: steak and potatoes and green vegetables. I smoke and I drink. The worst five years of my 21 as a pro were the five when I didn't smoke at all. Now I've gone back to cigarettes, a pack or two a day, although I don't inhale them. As for alcohol, I enjoy bourbon -- it's part of my University of Kentucky background -- but I don't guzzle it down like water. I sip it, and I limit myself to two or three drinks. You may see old George Blanda acting stupid, but you won't see him acting drunk!"

I 100% believe Antonio Brown had a long term goal to get to NE, and did just what he needed to in order to get there. The only question is whether or not NE had a hand in it. I believe they did, because I think that organization is willing to do whatever it takes to win, as long as they can get away with it. However, I will say that I am a Patriots hater, so I am obviously biased.

Oh, and this. LOL

Totally agree on the first part.

On the second part, I hope not but it may be hard to judge... for example if his agent asked the Pats would you be interested if AB was available and they said yes or perhaps... is that tampering? I dunno. It'll be interesting to see what develops on that front.

On the last part about tearing the organization from the inside, I would say NFW. I think they'll tell him that he has a serious chance to get a SB ring but that they won't tolerate any antics... IOW, our way or the highway. And I suspect that even with a prima donna like AB that Belechick, Brady, Edelman and others will have enough credibility based on their accomplishments that he just might listen to them and heed their advice.... at least I hope so.

Antonio Brown...just another reason to hate the New England Patriots, and their cheating ways.

^^^^ Haters hate... that's just what they do.

In many cases because they don't have a decent team to watch. :D

Browns or Bengals? :D

The Texas vs. Saints game was a thriller. I'm surprised the Texans played so well.

Agree! Great game and unexpectedly good game from the Texans. That last FG was such a good kick. When you look at the distance the ball carried over the posts, it could have been a 65 yarder and he still might have gotten it in.

What I will never understand is "prevent defense". It gives up big plays and long yards and if a FG is all the other team needs, it makes it so much easier for teams to get within FG range.

Gronkowski (The Gronk) was on Stuart Varney this morning as a spokesman for a pain relief product. He was going to open a tube of the medication for Stuart to use but couldn't get the safety seal off the tube.... Hands were too big...

Hilarious.

Stuart asked him if would play again... He didn't say no.... Sounded like a maybe to me. Pretty clear the Patriots don't need him after the game they played last night. Maybe they'll pay him not to sign on with anyone else.

And the Saints kicker is also the highest paid kicker in the NFL...$20+ million over 5 years with $9 mil guaranteed. He certainly earned his keep with that kick!

I was posting that picture in jest. I guarantee there's a no BS clause in his contract that they will enforce if he becomes a problem. I don't like the Pats, but they run a tight ship.

I hate prevent defenses in close games. If they're up two scores without much time remaining, and they just need to eat up time and prevent big plays, sure. However, it's so frustrating when it's a close game and you watch the team you're rooting for let the other team slowly march down the field, eating up time, leaving the prevent team without time to do anything once they score/kick a FG.

Did you notice how much weight he's lost? Still a huge guy obviously, but way under his playing weight. I bet his joints feel better now that he's not carting along all that extra mass, but he'd have a lot of work to ever get back to playing shape again.

Plus, I don't think he needs the money. He's been openly conservative about his spending/savings. He's said he's saved his NFL paycheckss and has lived off of only endorsements. He's urged other players to save their money and live within their means. Pretty surprising for a notorious blockhead frat bro. Good for him.

Seahawks pulled out a squeaker win in their home opener. I'll take it. Go Hawks!

That fumble call on Dalton at the end was terrible, and I don't know how it was upheld in replay, but in truth it probably didn't matter as the Bengals would have still had only about 9 seconds at their own 35 yard line or so had they (correctly, IMO) ruled it an incomplete pass.

The Texans have done that forever, even (especially) in the Kubiak years. Get a lead, go ultra conservative, let the opponent back into the game. They have never had the instinct to put the boot to the throat and go for the kill. O'Brien may be a Belichick disciple, but he sure doesn't coach like it. And their offensive line is still garbage.

I've honestly only watched a handful of Texans games, so I can't really comment on their play calling. However, I get frustrated with Doug Pederson doing the same thing with the Eagles. It's funny because he's one of the most aggressive coaches on offense, but then he turns into Dr. Jeckyl for defense.

I lived in Texas for 15 years until last year, so I've seen a lot of them. Whenever they get ahead by two scores, they pretty much always do this -- conservative play calling, prevent defenses, and at the end they are lucky if they preserve the win. They did it under Gary Kubiak and they still do it under O'Brien. I can count the number of blowout wins on one hand, because they almost never turn a big lead into a bigger lead.

He was quoted last week saying he would need approx. a month to get back to football shape. Shouldn't be that hard for him to put the 15-20 lbs back on.

BROWNS all the way, even before Art Model moved them to Baltimore...definitely not a band wagon fan like some are.

I think that's a very optimistic estimate... But what do I know about getting NFL-ready.

Conspiracy theories are always fun. This one is right in there with the "The NFL makes sure that the Patriots always get the easy schedule" conspiracy theory. I'm sure the Pats already knew they would be getting Brown for free - that's why they spent their #1 draft pick on a wide receiver.

As a Pats fan, I appreciate every year they are in the hunt, while remembering the past when they weren't. I feel sad for fans of teams that usually have no chance.

Since the Pats had already offered the Steelers a 1st round draft pick for AB, the agent didn't need to ask anything.
