Ultraprocessed foods lead to obesity

I am continually amazed that mankind has survived to see the current age of paranoia. Our generation grew up just fine without car seats, bike helmets and playgrounds with "safe" surfaces. We ate Frosted Flakes, eggs & bacon, TV dinners, and canned corned beef hash. We walked to and from school alone. And we survived! What are the odds?

Eggs are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. Nutrient-dense, real food. Ultra-processed Frosted Flakes have nothing in common with eggs. It's probably a good thing you ate the eggs when you were young, to (perhaps) make up for the Frosted Flakes. I'm sure I ate some Frosted Flakes when I was a kid, but I sure wouldn't touch them now.....

Here's how Red Vines are made: 100% of sugar and wheat flour with some color dye and artificial flavoring. You are guaranteed not to get any fiber or vitamin from Red Vines, only pure calories from carb.

I'm shocked. I was sure it was pure health food.

It can be considered "health food". A serving of 1.5 oz of Red Vines provides 140 calories. And all animals need calories to be healthy. :)

If supplemented with broccoli which has only 10 calories in 1 oz but provides some fiber, vitamins, and mineral, then it is better.

Oops, neither Red Vines nor broccoli has fat, and we need fat for a balanced diet. We need to add some bacon, then we are set.

PS. Broccoli sautéed in bacon fat! Yummy!

Well, I think that depends on when you ask. IIRC eggs were "out" for a long time due to cholesterol. Now they are "in." Who knows? Maybe they will become "out" sometime in the future.

I really don't pay much attention to studies that show microscopically small increases in microscopically small numbers based on a statistically insignificant number of study subjects self-reporting their behavior.

And then there is the problem of incompetent and bogus studies: https://phys.org/news/2018-07-beware-scientific-studiesmost-wrong.html.

Last time I checked, red wine was "in." I am not going to check again.

Whole food, plant based

https://nutritionstudies.org/whole-food-plant-based-diet-guide/

Even if you cheat now and then, picking un-processed whole grains, veggies and fruits is the way to go.

I avoid (but not 100%) meats, cheeses and most dairy and processed crap like chips, snack foods.

There are alternative recipes for most anything you crave. It is a funny world. People are killing themselves bit by bit. American Dream!

I notice quite a bit of "healthy eating shaming", especially in immediate family. My obese brother in law loves to salt and butter everything and make noises. He will be dead way too soon. Pandemic of crap food.

Better yet, add sliced potatoes nicely browned and some onions, then throw out the broccoli and eat the rest. You can make the same recipe, substituting Brussels sprouts for the broccoli.

Potatoes and onions can substitute for broccoli? I beg your pardon, but that is simply not true.

And I eat Brussels sprouts too. Brussels sprouts and broccoli are brothers, as they are of the same species called Brassicaceae.

Either one will supplement Red Vines in one's diet, although I eat no Red Vines. :)

It depends on your objective. For me, that substitution would be excellent. I might even leave some of the bacon in the pan, not just the fat.

Interesting article. I suspect that the success of low carb diets is not so much due to eating less carbs as it is due to eating far less processed foods.
You can’t discount blood insulin levels as it has such a huge impact on hunger as well as fat storage/preventing fat burning.

Eating to keep my fasting insulin low is working for me. I ate little junk and home cooked meals from scratch with mostly “whole foods” before, but it took cutting out the whole grains and starchy veggies to get my fasting insulin levels down to a good place, so I’m sticking with it.

I am attending a conference on Friday which focuses on the plant based diet. It is geared toward health care professionals, but I am sure I will be able to understand some of it. It should be interesting.

We started noticing this 30+ years ago. Never saw kids outside any more. Although we have learned that much of that free range outdoor play has been replaced with structured, goal oriented "activities." So the youngsters we know are still very active.
There is definitely more junk/fast food around today then in my day but another big change is the sedentary lifestyle of the kids. As kids we were always outside playing in the woods, riding bikes, or playing ball. In my current neighborhood there are quite a few kids but I rarely see any of them outside.

Parents are getting into trouble for letting their kids play outside alone. I find that ridiculous. I limited tv time for mine.

Funny. I always though that more calories taken in than expended lead to increased weight.

I was taught that your body processes fat/protein in 50/50 ratio. Fat comes from carbs, muscle comes from protein, so if you put less carbs in your body and more protein, your body will run out of carbs and start burning fat; however if you have less protein it will start burning muscle (ie why so many people that diet often start losing muscle mass too).

I don't doubt that processed foods cause people to retain more weight but I don't believe it has anything to do with carbs/fat/protein. It goes back to good gut and bad gut health. Processed foods destroy our guts ability to process foods correctly which leads to all sorts of things like inflammation, allergies, etc. Good gut health via unprocessed foods can help stimulate digestion and metabolism, but its not all unprocessed foods, there are some that are better than others. Dark greens and Red fruits and veggies for example are low in glycmic index and thus don't cause insulin spikes which helps your body to better meter itself.

I'm waiting for a study that actually looks at what is happening in peoples gut as they eat better. There use to be a good BBC diet/health reality show where she use to go to peoples houses and take samples of their poo and have it analyzed before and after they went thru the program. I can't remember the name of it but it really showed just how out of whack some peoples bodies are

I've been on a low carb higher fat diet for 21 months and have lost 45 lbs. I find I eat far less food than before as I am not hungry.

Ketosis

The primary issue is it works but is unsustainable.

Once you quit low carb..here comes the weight back.

Ketosis

Once you quit low carb..here comes the weight back.

So then why quit?

I've been low carb for about eight years. It's a great way to eat.

I was at about 250 and currently orbit around 200 (I'm tall).

Your metabolism can go up and down too. So if your metabolism drops, you can gain weight even when eating fewer calories. The human body is not a simple system. One key is to not let the metabolism go down, and calorie restriction can do just that. You really have to address any underlying metabolic problems.

What is unsustainable about it? There are people who have been in ketosis for 20 years.
