2019 tax software

Unfortunately you can't file a return for an estate using TT or H&R Block so I will probably hire someone to do the return for me.

Both Intuit and H&R Block sell tax prep software that allows you to prepare Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts. However, you might want to have a pro do the 1041 for you anyway.

Has anyone seen the Turbo Tax link in their Fidelity accounts yet?

I'm not seeing it and when I searched, it doesn't come up.

I searched TurboTax discount on the Fidelity website and found their offer. They have a similar discount on H&R Blocks' software... $20 off.

Reading the fine print this 'offer' was only good until 10/31.

Big nothing...

Hmm, we've gotten it for free the last 3-4 years.

My parents had a big managed account with them.

I ended that last week. They sold all positions this week. The cash is still there.

Heads up, Quicken TaxCaster for android is updated to 2019, work great as a very close estimate for my Roth conversions.

Do you use TT for your state taxes?

Here in Virginia the state offers online fillable forms. They aren't the most elegant as one has to remember to hit the 'calculate' button each time a change is made, and there are no interview questions. Our state return uses the federal return's numbers and applies a few adjustments so an interview isn't really needed. No need to pay extra for me.

Can’t get onto Costco site to check TT price. On overload I presume.

The Costco price is usually still low in Jan, and Amazon usually matches it. So we tend to go with Amazon.

H&R Block Delux with state, download version, $24.97 on Amazon today (Thanksgiving).

That 4% offer is good up to a $2000 gift card. Is it permissible to make a $50,000 estimated tax payment in December and receive a $50,000 refund in Jan/Feb and claim the $2000 on the 4% Amazon offer?

edit: Nevermind. Two things. One, they limit your refund to $9000 for this 4% match so that is only $360, not worth it. Two, as my wife pointed out just now, you would be stuck with $9,360 in Amazon gift cards, which is quite too much even as much as we spend on Amazon.

I have been using H&R Block for years and years and been quite happy with it. After reading this forum I am intrigued by Turbo Tax "what if" scenario which (apparently) lets you predict your taxes under various changing income scenarios. For example, once you know your taxable income from "regular" sources you could try out differing Roth conversion amounts and/or the effects of capital gains and/or loses. This would be useful in determining tax implications and planning any portfolio maneuvers prior to December 31st.

I can do this in H&R Block software but it's kind of clunky to execute.

Anyone who uses this feature in TT--would you please comment on its ease of use and its usefulness?

Easy, do a search for 8606 in TT and click Jump to Form...then update the #s in the form. I do it myself as well.

As I read the offer the maximum refund you can apply to the 4% bonus is $5K, worth a $200 bonus.

Limits apply ($2000 per e-card, maximum $5000 per customer).

Amzn +$15 right now to what I paid in store at Costco last Jan. If I was in hurry, that wouldn't stop me, but won't have all our tax data till March.

If wanting to get an early start one can always start with the TurboTax online version then transfer the data to the desktop version when purchased at a later date. Don't have to pay for the online version until you efile. Likely can do the same with H&R Block.

Open What-If worksheet. In column 1 it populates your 2019 data. Three additional columns exist, where you can copy data from column to column, and edit values to see the effect.

We had to order the CD early this year to get the best price from Amazon. I have no idea why shipping the CD was cheaper price than the download. But perhaps it was just to match the Costco price.

Thanksgiving Day: Amazon now selling H&R Block Deluxe - federal only for $14.99. Includes Amazon 4% bonus offer.

Newegg.com has H&R Block Deluxe with State for 19.99 if you get their emails,

I bought it, as this is as cheap as I've gotten it the past 2 years, but not quite the cheapest it has ever been.

If the code does not work, it might be because you are not registered with them to get emails. They let you register at the top of the sales webpage, so perhaps that will work, to enable the codes

Camelcamelcamel sent me an email this morning:

H&R Block Tax Software Premium & Business 2019

dropped from ~$70 to ~$60 on amazon.com. The partnership I run already bought it a few days ago for ~$70  ; if the software does the job again this year I'm not gonna complain about losing out on a $10-off sale price.
