What was your COVID news for the day?

Oh the fear is here, empty grocery shelves. I really don't get the toilet paper thing, but it's real.

Wandered through one of the local supermarkets to see what people were stocking up on. The toilet paper and bread sections were totally out. The paper towel section was about 3 quarters empty. Canned goods ( primary vegetables and soup), yogurt, sports drinks, and flour sections were about half of what they normally were. Yogurt was very low. Everything else seemed at normal levels.

A relative who works in a Costco receiving warehouse tells us they are still receiving shipments of toilet paper daily and sending it out to the stores as fast as they can. They may not be available online, but if you go early to a Costco store (from my observation last week, before noon) you can get some.

DW flew back from FL on Tuesday, March 10th. Her employer just announced today that anyone who travelled by train or plane since March 2nd is now asked to self quarantine for 14 days effective from when they returned. She already worked 2 days since she came back. Odd.

Not clear yet if time off is paid, unpaid, sick time or vacation.

Since I'm retired, it will be nice to have her around for a couple of weeks. [emoji16]

A grocery store in Edmonton, Alberta is leading the way in coronavirus pandemic innovation by implementing a special early morning "Golden Shopping Hour" that will be exclusive to seniors, those with mobility concerns, and those who are most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

ABC News reporter Kris Reyes came across the promotion by Belmont Sobey's and praised it on Twitter saying:

"This is such a simple yet brilliant move by a grocery store in Edmonton ... I am truly hopeful for the creative solutions and innovation that will come out of this crisis, keeping those truly in need, in mind."

Ironically, my Groupon for a craft brewery called Epidemic Ales is going to expire before we can go out again to use it.

We’re leaving Las Vegas tomorrow am. Restaurants close tomorrow. MGM and Wynn owned casinos close indefinitely starting Tuesday.

I am so sorry that your mother and your uncle are being affected by this situation as you describe! I will be hoping for the best for them and for all of your family.

Thanks. Mom is doing fine. No cases of the virus at her facility, she's probably just missing her bi-weekly trip to the store to pick up snacks. :)

My uncle was on hospice long before the COVID mess started. I honestly didn't think he would live this long, but it sounds like he's holding steady. We were never close anyway.

I'm personally not making any changes in my lifestyle, but I don't go to town that often anyway. I'm washing my hands a lot, but I do that anyway.

The New York Times is now providing free access to much of its coronavirus coverage.

And you can sign up (free) here to get their Coronavirus Briefing newsletter.

My favorite line of the day:

“Wash your hands like you’ve been chopping jalapeños and you need to change your contacts.”

We are still in Scotland, staying with and helping DW’s sister recover from her heart surgery. Progress is slow but steady and we expect to stay another 7 - 10 days. She had her surgery 26th February and it has been nice to be able to help her like this.

We went out shopping today to a large store a few miles away, mostly for us to get some supplies of canned goods, pasta etc for when we get back to England in case we have to go into isolation. It was very quiet (Monday morning) and most things were in stock including toilet paper, tissues, bottled water and disinfectants. No hand sanitizers and no eggs. Much reduced amounts of rice and pasta but good enough choice and no shortage really of canned goods. Other parts of the country have reported much worse. Masses of bottled water available also, I don’t think Brits worry about losing drinkable tap water.

I don't eat regular bread. I rarely eat the low carb bread we have. DS and DH finished off two loaves and didn't add to the shopping list. We were out of bread two days after I did the weekly shopping (aargggh!). There were a couple of things I was going to get soon, and I'm on the hunt for one more bottle of hand sanitizer or isopropyl alcohol. I hit 3 stores yesterday-no bread. Saw lots of frustrated people and empty store shelves. So I set my alarm and went to the store at 6AM. They were busy stocking. I got one loaf of regular bread (not low carb), and the other items that were empty yesterday. I noted that the bakeries was fully stocked with doughnuts, cakes, and bagels, but not bread. "Let them eat cake!"

I made keto rolls yesterday.

Didn't grocery shop yesterday, thought today would be better. (So much for my planning, cashier said yesterday was quiet.)

Arrived there this a.m. about 10 minutes prior to the 08:00 a.m. opening......a lineup already.....stream of cars entering the parking lot.

General attitude seems to be "Wow, this is an adventure"...all very polite & convivial.....hope it lasts and doesn't turn sour.

You have to scare people enough so that they will self-isolate.

How do you do that without being accused of fear-mongering?

But I don't think that's why you self-isolate. I'm doing it to stop community spread. I'll be statistically fine even if I do get it, but by staying home I avoid unknowingly passing it to waitresses, cashiers, others in stores and restaurants, who may be older or have conditions, and more likely to have a harder time with it. My parents and FIL are well into their 70's. My SIL has Lupus. Any of of them get it and they are in the double-digit risk pool.

Isolation isn't about self-preservation, it's about flattening the curve across the community. Fear isn't my motivator, caring and reducing risk for others, is.

My bank employee friend told me of a little old lady who cashed a check, then pumped her hand full of hand sanitizer then went out to her car, where she filled up her bottle in the car. She then came back into the bank and deposited the cash, refilling her hand and going back to the car. She did it twice before a bank security official stopped her.

CA governor recommended all over 65 self quarantine. I am cancelling 2 dentists appointments. DW was to have some scans run, but will delay.

I live in The Villages, FL and the lack of concern here is scary! The average age here is 67 so when (not if) it gets here it will be bad.

Free music on the squares was canceled so now people are still flocking to the squares but are dancing to the radio music piped into the public spaces. Restaurants are full. It's just unbelievable.

I run a big water volleyball group (100+ people). I sent out an email this morning letting them know that I will not be playing for the time being but as long as the pools stay open I'll continue to organize play. I just won't be there to supervise play. First response was from a retired doctor thanking me for my message. A good friend told me I was being stupid and was over reacting.

I'm young and healthy so I'd likely be fine if I get it. But I refuse to intentionally put myself in a situation where I get it and become a carrier.

OH has restaurants and bars closing at 9:00 pm, and KY just announced all restaurants and bars will be closed. Drive through and take out still allowed.

Governor Inslee just closed bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues in Washington state. My daughter works at the theater, so I'm assuming she is going to be out of work now (business has been extremely slow the last week or two anyway). She still works part time at an assisted living home, but that won't pay the bills. She just moved to her own apartment a couple months ago and was already pushing what she could afford. This certainly won't help her situation. Thankfully she has money in savings to hold her over for a while. Hopefully this won't last long term.

My wife works for the county and they're scrambling to figure out how to handle the situation. Closing is not an option.

It is a very minor thing but with Washington shutting down all non grocery stores, I think even the hardware stores will close, meaning we won't be able to get construction materials.

They last did this in 1918 in Washington state. Been awhile.

Here in France, all the schools, universities, museums, cinemas, bars, restaurants, entertainment venues, dentist offices, hair salons, non-essential retail businesses, etc... are now closed. Grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, and government offices remain open. But the government does not think that people are taking the threat seriously enough (lots of people are still congregating in parks and other public spaces). President Macron is scheduled to talk to the nation tonight and there is a good chance that we will soon be heading towards a lockdown.

Here in Pa they closed down the state booze stores in 3 contiguous counties. I went to the local booze store and in my still-open county and it was mobbed. Big line out the door. Everyone thinks every county is going to be closed soon, I guess. The good news is that food stores sell beer and wine, and the food stores will presumably remain open.

Shame on that bank security guard. He should have given her a bottle or two. In a bank?
