Oh, the young and the virus

CDC just released data showing younger people in the US get hospitalized and treated in ICU along with geezers.

The report, issued Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that — as in other countries — the oldest patients had the greatest likelihood of dying and of being hospitalized. But of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized, 38 percent were notably younger — between 20 and 54. And nearly half of the 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were adults under 65, the C.D.C. reported.

Kids!

“If I get corona, I get corona. At the end of the day, I'm not gonna let it stop me from partying”: Spring breakers are still flocking to Miami, despite coronavirus warnings.

:banghead::banghead::banghead:

I think some fault should be laid on their mayor and governor. Close the damn Miama beaches and bars, since the spring breakers are obviously not taking any of this seriously.

Some people will not take this pandemic seriously until it personally affects them. Either they will get sick, or someone they know will get sick. Until that happens they are acting as if it’s just a seasonal flu.

I saw a group of teenagers walking down the street today. Two of them were coughing and sneezing. They walked into a restaurant as a group. We are on strict orders not to have any public gatherings outside of immediate family household members. They just don’t care.

Well, I don't know about y'all. Many of you seem to have matured emotionally and intellectually at a much younger age than I did. There's a reason for my sigline. I suspect 45 years ago I'd have been like "eff you people, I'm going to do what I want. I'm immortal." Not proud of it, but it's easy to put myself in the kids shoes. I'd love to see them all care enough to do the right thing, but it's not going to happen without martial law. And probably not even then.

Are you guys talking about those young people by any chance??

Florida Beaches Packed During Crisis - Gov. Ron DeSantis said it's "not uniform throughout the state that you're seeing massive crowds at beaches," despite videos of gatherings in Tampa Bay.

This particular photo, I believe, was taken yesterday at Clearwater Beach, filled with March Break students... Personally, I think this is absolutely insane.

I see an older couple in the foreground of that picture, and a number of small children (at least 5). The children would presumably be with non-spring breakers.

FWIW ....

Thanks NW-Bound.

I am staying far away from anyone under 40. They have been very flippant about this. Many are silently infected just spreading it around unknowingly. I wish they'd come together in the effort instead of looking out only for #1 and their social life. It is going to take scare tactics to get them to help out.

An article on this:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/y...hospitalizations-in-us/ar-BB11nGEB?li=BBnb7Kz
In the C.D.C. report, 20 percent of the hospitalized patients and 12 percent of the intensive care patients were between the ages of 20 and 44, basically spanning the millennial generation.
“Younger people may feel more confident about their ability to withstand a virus like this,” said Dr. Christopher Carlsten, head of respiratory medicine at the University of British Columbia. But, he said, “if that many younger people are being hospitalized, that means that there are a lot of young people in the community that are walking around with the infection.”

Young people are far more interested than other age groups in getting together, mostly because they are driven to find mates. When hormone meets hormone, thoughts of "But what about grandma?" fly out the window.

Plus, everything they read tells them they either won't catch the virus, or it won't make them very sick.

On top of all that, they are bored and restless, what with school canceled, many jobs closed, and no amusements to go to.

Yes, and the dumpy couple in the right foreground look to be prime COVID-19 fodder.

Definitely an old-people thing, which I have also noticed in the past. Many of them don't respect even normal social distance (which varies across cultures and is about 2-3 feet in the U.S.) I think it may come from being hard of hearing.

I told him to keep his distance, and he says "sure", but he kept trying to walk into our bubble, which had me dancing across the lawn to stay away from him. He just doesn't get it. .

Advice for our young. We need to update this to include twerking, passing the phone around, etc. They can spit in their wipe since nobody under 60 has a handkerchief anyway.

And the smarter ones know, that too requires special protective gear. :)

agree about hearing problems. My DH a VM vet always stops and talks to guys wearing identifying hats or pins. They literally have to get within 18 inches of each other to have a conversation.

During regular flu season I really get on him about his practice. I've told him don't get so close but they always end up within spitting distance.

There's another issue - spitting when talking. When your teeth don't fit right or some are missing, you pretty much can't help it.

This is America. Home of the brave; land of the free.

So my attitude is educate as much as we can, but after that people (particularly stupid) people will do what they’re going to do.

If I was King my solution to this problem would be if you don’t self-isolate, you don’t practice social distancing fine, but if you get sick you go to the back of the healthcare line.

I know I sure would be mad (to put it mildly) if I, or someone I cared about, as someone over sixty and healthy and practiced self isolation, was told if I/they got sick, "sorry, you're old, we're going to save the reckless despite it is their fault because you're old and they're young".

I'm sure glad we got off the topic of spitting. It was beginning to make me queasy with the visuals popping into my mind.

I understand where you're coming from. The obvious problem is since we don't have massive surveillance and chips implanted in us, no one can prove how anyone, young or old, may or may not have been reckless. My 2 young adult kids still need to go to work, DD quite a bit less now as the restaurant business has died off so much. DS is on the kitchen staff at a nursing home. Other than that, they stay home, no socializing at all.

In contrast, SMIL is 79, in extremely poor health, she almost died last year, has one lung, and still insists on going to church every week. FIL is 86, high risk due to his age alone, but also with health problems, and somehow thinks that by him staying home from church that he's going to be OK.

Given those 2 scenarios, it seems to me that the old folks are the ones being reckless, not the young folks.

Plenty of people of all ages are just doing what they need to do right now. Go to work, if still required. Get food and other necessities. Necessary care. That's it. Others of all ages will still try to socialize unnecessarily. Businesses are being shuttered to try and prevent a lot of it, but...

My church has many older members. To relieve them of the need to decide whether to attend services, the church board voted to close the church. So now it's locked and they couldn't show up even if they wanted to. Many people are more comfortable being told than deciding for themselves.

Last Sunday, the service was streamed. Only the pastor and the organist were actually in the Sanctuary. I expect that will continue for quite some time.

Now, Florida is trying to put a stop to this...

‘party’s over’ for spring breakers amid coronavirus crisis

https://nypost.com/2020/03/19/flori...-for-spring-breakers-amid-coronavirus-crisis/

The photos in the article makes me wonder if anything much will change unless they come up with a way to enforce it though.

Self-interest may win over consideration for the health of others...
They closed the bars and restaurants now, so hopefully, things will change.

Judging by what I'm reading on this forum, it looks like some of you have a point about the older folks.

Looks like some older folks are going to the store constantly in fear of running out. A few report here they just go to watch because it is interesting.

That's just as bad as sweaty, young, swimsuit clad kids hugging. And a hell of a lot less fun.

It's the human condition and not really about age...so your only recourse is to lock yourself inside your home.

My point was that anyone who is reckless/careless (irrespective of age) should go to the back of the healthcare line.

All else being equal (which it never is) young should be saved before old.

Finally, my approach has as much chance of being applied as I do of being anointed King!

I am all for it, same as many people.

The problem is that doctors cannot tell the reckless from the careful when they arrive at the ER.

While we like to say “the heck with these jerks, they brought it on themselves,” we can’t neglect the fact that they will infect others. And we can’t just let them rot.

Went out for a drive along A1A today - the city beaches are closed. Yellow tape and cop cars at the entrances, barricades all along, no parking allowed. Of course the one County beach park was still open and packed. But that won't be long imo.

While I agree the kid in that video is terrible, I do have to wonder how many of us might have passed that test at 21, and really, as drunk and stupid as he sounded, does he really deserve to have his name and face as the very symbol of selfish youngs branded forever?
