What was your COVID news for the day?

17 days is actually pretty alarming because that would mean the virus could actually be packed up on a product in one country, shipped overseas, and still arrive intact after delivery.

As it happens, I read this story earlier today. I just received my AirPods Pro which were shipped directly to me from Apple factory in Shanghai on Friday. I think I’ll wait a couple of weeks before opening them.

"the researchers wrote, adding that the finding doesn’t necessarily mean the virus spread by surface."

The real risk still is from other people, not from a few virus particles that manage to survive on surfaces.
Agreed.

The group gatherings by far seem the worst: parties, classes, conferences, funerals, weddings. High numbers of infected seem to result from those.

New evidence emerges of a coronavirus seasonal cycle. Warm, humid weather could slow coronavirus, new research finds

A new study uploaded to the research site SSRN over the weekend finds that 90 percent of the coronavirus transmissions have occurred within a specific temperature (37 to 63 degrees) and absolute humidity range. For areas outside this zone, the virus is still spreading, but more slowly, according to the study by two scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The paper, which was shared with the public before peer review for the benefit of public health officials, notes that even in warm parts of the United States, such as Texas and Florida, cases are not exhibiting the same exponential growth rates as they have in New York and Washington state.

Good article. Your link took me to a summary page that wouldn't load properly in my browser, so here's an alternate link for the full article in case anyone else has the same problem. https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/03/24/warm-humid-weather-coronavirus/

The least surprising news item of the day - and probably the month - The 2020 Olympic Games have been postponed. Vey wordy announcement here https://www.olympic.org/news/joint-...ittee-and-the-tokyo-2020-organising-committee
In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.

So, there's some basis behind all those Asian countries spraying disinfectant in the streets, inside public places, buses, etc..., after all. They knew something we did not.

That's what I'm thinking too!!

Looks like normalcy is returning to the stores around me. Shelves are filling up again and no hoards of people. But TP and PT are still sporadic.

Four people ages 7 to 51 have been diagnosed with the virus in my city. None have been out of the country. The 46 year old man has underlying conditions and is hospitalized. The remaining three without underlying conditions are isolated at home.

Austin is under shelter-in-place from midnight until April 13. Based on first read of the order, it looks like leaving town in our RV is not permitted. We were hoping to go back out next week so will wait a few days for hopeful clarification. We had early warning from local news alerts that this was likely, so I took the little dog to the groomer first thing. He had only 3 customers yesterday. I gave him a large tip.

Ordered some yarn to make an afghan for DBIL who is doing genealogy research on my family.

Pulled/gathered up 4 yard bags of weeds and detritus. Lots of people out walking. Also the tennis courts across the street were full, but I suspect they'll be shut down starting tomorrow.

I have two ZOOM meetings later today for two different volunteer gigs related to church.

In New Orleans, we have been under partial lockdown for a week or two already, by orders from the mayor. No groups of more than 10 people, all 6 feet apart. Businesses are closed up tight, except for a few types such as banks, gas stations, pharmacies, and grocery stores. Restaurants are limited to delivery. For example no gyms, bars, barber shops, or malls are permitted to remain open. The Louisiana National Guard is in place to help enforce all of these rules.

A couple of days ago the governor put the whole state on the same type of partial lockdown. The only difference we could see, was that at first it sounded like we could not walk outside for exercise. But an unofficial clarification was that we can walk alone for exercise (only) if we don't get 6 feet from anybody else. So, it's the same as what New Orleans had already been required to do.

None of this seems to be helping but maybe the results will show up in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile the two of us are not overly bothered by the lockdown. I have not left the house for over a week, although F went to the grocery store last week.

Today I will need to operate my car for a few minutes, to make sure it still runs. Can't leave the driveway, though. I might anyway unless F objects. Maybe I could put on the "sweet little old lady" act and pretend ignorance, or that I was headed to the grocery store and got lost.

On the bright side, we have noticed that our food and gas bills are much lower! Also our discretionary spending is lower since Amazon is so messed up lately.

Last night I looked at my portfolio and it was pretty dismal. I forced myself to rebalance. Ugh. Nothing like buying more Total Stock Market fund under the circumstances.

Oahu has effectively shut down. Grocery stores, gas stations, medical facilities banks and food carry outs are permitted. Upon going out, 6 foot separation is "required." Supposedly, breaking any "rule" is punishable by $5K fine and 1 year imprisonment. Police HAVE BEEN authorized to "deal" with those who break the rules.

I was picturing a situation where DW and I go for our walk in the neighborhood and a LEO "pulls us over" for walking hand in hand (necessary for DW as she is no longer as stable on her feet.) I can see how the conversation might go. The LEO accuses us of not "socially isolating." I can picture myself asking the LEO's permission to have sexx with my wife and asking how we might socially isolate during the process.

Yes, it's just a thought experiment. I don't think LEOs will be coming after DW and I BUT they could. Interesting times we live in but YMMV.

Something to consider for those who like taking cruises..

CDC says coronavirus survived in Princess Cruise ship cabins for up to 17 days after passengers left.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/23/cdc...bins-up-to-17-days-after-passengers-left.html

I thought it was scary, but some posters have reminded us that it may mean just the RNA remnant of the virus, instead of intact and viable virus.

We just have to remind ourselves that from now on, when taking a cruise, do not drag our fingertip on the surface of the furniture, then stick it up our nose, or pick our teeth with our fingernail. In fact, do not do that even outside of a cruise ship. It's a bad habit, even without this coronavirus. Only do "deep cleaning" of your face immediately after carefully washing your hands, and in the privacy of our bathroom.

I read that. It’s just unbelievable!
It's unbelievable because it's NOT TRUE! Or at least what the take-away message could be interpreted as is not true.

They found remnants of the viral RNA. The media is misreporting this finding and will result in unnecessary fear.
Correct.

the virus' RNA, outside of it's package is nothing to worry about, but this story reported it as if it mattered for contagion, and now the world will be running around, hair on fire style, saying you can get sick from a 17 day old surface

They reported
Coronavirus RNA survived for up to 17 days aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, lasting far longer on surfaces than previous research has shown
And most people, logically would think "OMG, I could get sick 17 days after someone shed virus on that surface". Way at the bottom of the article they say
Correction: This story was updated to reflect that SARS-CoV-2 RNA, not live virus, was identified on surfaces in cruise ship cabins up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess.
So they originally were just wrong . Then they left the story up, without clarification that it didn't mean that you could get the disease from the surfaces 17 days later.

How many clicks would they get with the headline: "Non-viable virus molecules found on cruise ship"

There were too many people walking along the pier, so they closed it.

Warning signs everywhere. This one reminds people not to touch the stair handrails because they may be infected. Every cross walk had a warning to use your elbow to press the walk button to avoid passing on the virus.

DH read the CDC report about it - and it didn't qualify anything as being RNA "remnants" so who knows.
Here is the CDC statement:
SARS-CoV-2 RNA was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted (Takuya Yamagishi, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, personal communication, 2020). Although these data cannot be used to determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces, further study of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 aboard cruise ships is warranted.
They said nothing about non-viability, or fragments, etc.

Wow - it's amazing that so many people don't get it, that public services has to remove equipment, blockade parking access to public parks and beaches, etc.

So this is an example of virus hysteria going too far. Hand rails are there for a reason, to put your hand on to prevent falling down the stairs should you slip or trip.

I've worked in extremely safety conscious work places where your coworkers are trained to coach you if they see you not using handrails on stairs. And you know what, OSHA safety statistics over decades show the effectiveness of this attitude at those sites.

Yea, lets throw that all away because we are afraid of a surface that is in ultraviolet radiation all day. This ain't subway poles in Manhattan.

UV kills the virus but it takes some time. It is hard to quantify the risk of someone touching the rail shortly after an infected person did. And people are not supposed to be there anyway with the lockdown.

Palm Springs, CA and Rancho Mirage have put in place a temporary ban on vacation rentals. We've been here since mid January, but it sounds like we need to pack up and leave.

We will contact the condo owners in the morning.

Too bad. The part about current visitors having to leave and “return to their home community “ is thoughtless and harsh. Hope you manage to get back home without much ado.
