New Shingrx Shingles Vaccine

Never had the shot and never had shingles and had chicken pox as kid...so, something is working good for me. I take some natural calmers to keep myself de stressed and use my mind for that too,

My neighbor just did the Chingrex (sp) and she's into 3 months of horrible nausea. She is convinced it was the shot.

Hmmm. I have a supplement with Wellcare but had to pay $160 for the shingrix shot a few weeks ago at CVS. Also got a pneumonia the same day. Maybe I have a different Wellcare plan.

When I was setting up the plan D for a very old relative, I found just for his zip code there were around 6 Wellcare plans available.

A general comment about Plan D:
One "trick" with the plan D choices is that it's VERY important to pick the pharmacy you want to use, as an included preferred pharmacy has much lower drug prices than a included standard pharmacy.
It's nice that the medicare.gov site allows a person to select 5 pharmacies, so one can see which are preferred for various plans.

I had my shingles shot, the second one was done by a newbie, so she JAMMED it in. My arm was sore for 2 days.

Otherwise I had no ill effects from getting the shingles shots, pneumonia shot, and the flu shot.

I think it's like SEC Rule 156, which requires a warning statement on investment funds:
"Past performance is not indicative of future results"

Jam, you are just lucky. Maybe you will avoid Shingles but maybe you will not. Take it from someone who had a horrible case of Shingles before there was a vaccine--YOU DON'T WANT SHINGLES. I highly recommend the Shingrix shot. Most side effects are mild and short lived.

I had the old shingles shot when I turned 60. I've since had what I am pretty sure was a mild patch of shingles on one arm. I thought at first it was a reaction to pruning oleander, but it didn't respond to steroid cream and didn't truly itch - more of an electric stinging sensation, very unpleasant. Went away in 10 days.

Mentioned this during my recent physical. The Dr. agreed it sounded like very mild shingles. He recommended getting Shingrix when I turn 65.

Amethyst--why wait until 65? Can't you get the Shingrix shots now? I bet your under 65 insurance will pay more on the cost than Medicare will--most Medicare part D plans pay very little for Shingrix. Check what your current insurance will pay. I have had Shingles 3 times--twice even after the old shot but I quit having Shingles after I took the Shingrix shots.

I have Federal BCBS. If I also take Medicare at 65, I should hope I wouldn't have to pay anything for a shot that the Dr. advises - what with paying two insurance premiums.

Can you explain this, "what with paying two insurance premiums."
Are you keeping the Federal BCBS with Medicare? And if the Federal BCBS pays for the Shingrix, why not get it now. I got no financial help from Medicare or my plan D. Maybe you can find a Plan D that will cover Shingrix, but I suspect it would be a high priced plan D.
I paid $179.90 for my shot, I'll do it again in 2 months.

FYI -- I am a retired federal employee insured with the GEHA high deductible plan, which paid 100% of the cost when both my husband and I received the Shingrix vaccines at our local pharmacy. We are not yet medicare-eligible. You might want to check with BCBS to see if the vaccines are considered preventative immunizations that are free to insureds under the terms of FEHB. Just a thought.

Amethyst, you had better check with your insurer. Medicare normally does not pay for anything for the Shingrix shot but Part D plans may pay a small amount for them. I think I ended up paying around $140 for each shot and I am on Medicare with a supplement and Part D so I am paying 3 premiums.

Most people are better off getting the Shingrix vaccine before age 65--pre-65 insurance often pays for Shingrix but Medicare will not. Crazy huh?

Does Medicare pay for the old shingles shot? Maybe they have yet to switch over... government lack of nimbleness?

It may be that the doctor is thinking of longer immunity if she waits a bit.

I think you’d be better off having BCBS pay for it at no cost to you, and if you want to wait do it at age 64 - just before Medicare, allowing time to get both shots.

Doctors recommend these vaccines for anyone in the appropriate age group, so I don’t think your case would be an exception.

In TX you don’t need a prescription, you just go to the pharmacy and they coordinate with your insurance company.

Hope your good fortune holds out.

She may have convinced you - you sound like you were pretty convinced anyway - but just because B followed A doesn't come close to meaning A caused B. Logic fallacies can be amplified by the seriousness of B. I think we'll hear a lot of this issue as more & more get vaccinated for the virus. Some are bound to have serious health issues afterwards since they happen anyway.

The "post hoc ergo propter hoc" logical fallacy is always a barrier to clear thinking. I read that this was an issue with the national board discussing the COVID vaccination rollout plan. There was some fear that if they prioritize vaccination for people in nursing homes and those people die shortly thereafter (as people in nursing homes are wont to do regardless) then it could undermine public confidence in the vaccine.

I have one friend who had shingles and it was all due to stress of training a puppy in her later 60's, like training a newborn child..I could see that, she could not but....I know no others who had it and I've been taking supplements for 30 some yrs and could be too, my immune system is just stronger and I also meditate and take calming supplements too in the event I get a bit tense...so I believe I'm fine there...thanks..

It has been a while but I don't think Medicare pays for the old Shingles vaccine either but it was much less expensive and only required one shot (of course it did not work very well either).

Seriously?

I would gladly pay to avoid shingles! Brrrr.....

Agreed! Having seen DW suffer with shingles, I'd pay a $grand without blinking an eye. Fortunately, our shots were much less than that. YMMV

I just received my second shot at CVS Minute Clinic and it looks like insurance paid all. I asked the nurse how long the protection would last and she said, “You are good to go until they develop another vaccine.”

I get my 2nd Shingles shot Dec 21st as I need to get it before 2021 as my Insurance will cover less of it next year. 45.00 copay now. 100 or more next year per the pharmacy.
