What team known to be good did they dominate?
Good? Who knows this year when non-conference games were all but eliminated? And when teams like OSU only play six games in what turned out to be a craptacular Big10 and still get in the CFP?

We need 8 and we'll get it when the current contract runs out IMO. There's just too much demand for fairness involving more than the P5 - the P5 promised better access with the CFP after the disaster that was the BCS, but it clearly hasn't happened.

Wild finish to the Liberty - Coastal Carolina game last night. Liberty was trying to run the clock down and kick a game winning field goal rather than score and give Coastal and time to score and tie it up. But they fumbled inside the one as the back was trying not to score, while one of his blockers and all of Coastal's defense was trying to push and drag him across the goal line. Liberty wound up winning in OT.

I don't get paid $3M like Liberty's coach does, but I don't like relying on a FG because those aren't automatic. A 7 point lead with less than a minute to go seems better to me.

Agree.
Of course the NFL Raiders tried something similar yesterday and ended up losing the game.

So for now Hugh Freeze is in decent company but in my opinion the "try not to score" trend is not a good one.

Was interesting to see one loss Liberty vanquish previously unbeaten Coastal Carolina, which had earlier slain previously unbeaten BYU.

Until they come up with a more comprehensive playoff system all this my conference is better than your conference, my team is more deserving, and silly rankings by the pundits will only continue. Fact of the matter is, with reasonably good talent, a good game plan and motivation, any team can knock off another regardless of conference or their rankings. For playoffs, I would like to see something more akin to the sweet 16, and the $s generated would be good for the schools and perhaps the players as well. The only downside I can see is players who prep for the draft may not play due to injury concerns and need for prep time for combine.

Conceptually I agree with you. But in fact such elite G5 teams are very rare.

And look at this bowl season. Touted G5 teams have not fared well.

Undefeated Coastal Carolina- lost to unranked G5 Liberty

Undefeated San Jose State-blown out by unranked G5 Ball State

Ranked G5 Tulsa-lost to 3-7 P5 Mississippi State

Maybe Cincinnati can make some noise today in the Peach Bowl against a short handed Georgia squad that finished 4th in the SEC.

On the flip side, Houston and UCF both won bowls against P5 teams in recent years.

But yeah I agree that there is a tier between the upper end of the P5 and everyone else. I don't agree with DFW_M5 that any team can knockoff any other team in the FBS, at least not on a consistent basis. Once in a while, sure, but not consistently. And that is because the 'reasonably good' talent you mentioned is not on the same level.

Tough loss for Cincinnati. O couldn't get going in second half. Clutch FG at the end.

It does and has happened, not consistently, but can when the big boys take another team too lightly. Key play makers missing can also level the playing field.

Congrats to the Bucknuts! They had a helluva a game plan last night. Better team on the field for sure. Beat Bama!

I was surprised to see Clemson's D torched repeatedly. It seemed like a bad night for them. I felt like many teams could have beaten Clemson yesterday.

Dabo's dissing of OSU may have fired them up.

Just shows you have to lineup and play the games.

Being here in Cincinnati, I would have liked to see them win. They just let Georgia beat them in second half. Cincinnati kind of imploded.

Ohio State certainly made a statement though with their win over Clemson. Hope they can continue that performance into the final with Alabama. Clemson QB Trevor Laurence will still go #1 pick in the draft.

Yeah but I think you were implying that you can't rank teams/conferences and that's just not true, you look at the body of work and then you can generally say where P5 vs. G5 falls. E.g. does anyone think Cincy could beat Bama or OSU in the playoffs this year? Um, no. Should they be allowed to try in an expanded playoff and might win once in a blue moon? Sure.

The Rose Bowl?!? In Texas? That was absurd.

I don't think they were permitted to have it in California due to Covid restrictions so they had to move somewhere else. I guess they could have named it something else for this year but I don't see any problem calling it the Rose Bowl. They have roses in Texas don't they?

Tough times mean weird Rose Bowls.

1942 Rose Bowl was in Durham, North Carolina.

So far all the ACC teams have lost in the bowl games. Hoping for a UNC victory tonight but I don't know with so many opt outs. But anyway GO TAR HEELS!

I did not say you can't rank them as that will continue to happen despite my viewpoint on rankings that may unfairly skew playoff games. Rankings when it comes to these playoff games may make teams and their fans feel good or maybe bad depending on where they fall. Nevertheless, that is why I suggested a more comprehensive playoff system is needed vs limiting playoffs to only 4 teams. Now you have A&M complaining they would have been a better opponent for OU vs ND.

.... The whole thing smells bad. The CFP wanted Notre Dame. The Big 10 moved the goalposts so tOSU would be eligible for their conference championship game. Teams like Cincy and Texas A&M are on the outside because of it. The CFP has a list of maybe 5-6 schools it wants, and does what it can to make it so. Even the BCS felt less corrupt than this.

I think tOSU proved last night that it was justified to "move the goal posts" as you framed it.... they pretty much dominated #2 Clemson. Bama also looks good but I think the National Championship game should be very entertaining.

The Tides defense does not look as good to me as it has in past years. The Buckeyes on the other hand are strong on both sides of the ball, and if Fields has a good game, Bama will be vulnerable. Definitely looking forward to this game.

So after putting both ND and Clemson in the playoff, the ACC teams did not win a single bowl game.

The Big 12 won all of theirs. And the SEC was 6-2 with several mid division teams beating ranked opponents.

I guess that's why they line up and play.

Tyler Texas, the Rose Capital of America is about 90 minutes away.

I don't love that stadium but it was a natural to host a game that California would not let happen in their state.
