What did you do today? - 2021 version

More hard physical labor today. I spent a few more hours this morning scraping wallpaper and have completed the job. Now, I need to patch the plaster (two of the walls are 163 year old plaster and two are drywall) and then skim coat all of the walls prior to painting. We are turning our smaller guest bedroom into a walk in closet. It is the only room that has remained untouched since we bought the house 29 years ago.

After lunch, I up-potted the largest cabbages that I had started from seed in the kitchen and set them out for a few hours to cold harden. They'll get a few more hours each day until I put them in our community garden plot on April 1. The broccoli and kale will follow tomorrow. I also planted English peas in my small raised bed out behind the house, dug up the large irises and moved them to a sunnier spot on the other side of the house, then built an edge for the Siberian iris bed out of of pavers.

While I was working in the yard, I talked to my neighbor and was able to help her sign up for a COVID vaccine slot. All in all, a pretty full day. Time for dinner and a bit of the Scotch Ale I bought the other day.

Taxes, I did the taxes and E-filed. I was on a disability situation through June last year, and had some tax liability from that. When I started with the new employer I had them take out extra to cover, and I got within ~900 this year!
WOOHOO! We've had to write much larger checks the last few years, this was great.

Today was a great day for us, especially for DW. We both have had our 2 shots , the second one on 5 March. we went to her son's home for dinner, and our DIL and granddaughter from Reno were there. We had a great time hugging, son, other DIL and other granddaughter.
It was the first feeling of normalcy we have had.

Yesterday I pulled a hose around the remaining snowpiles, got the pressure washer running and cleaned out the garage and some of the driveway. The garage, despite being swept out several times, was nasty under the Wrangler as it was driven most of the winter. I did most of the driveway on.one half of the circle. Mud season hasn't started yet so I didn't don't a perfect job but it looks better.

When I got up this morning it was pouring down rain cleaning off much of the remaining stuff I was trying to do on the driveway. It rained and grooted most of the morning. This afternoon I sous vide juicy Lucy burgers with Swiss and blue cheese in them and finished on the grill.

DW was hinting her sweet tooth was wanting something so I made chocolate volcano cakes for dessert. Yum [emoji39].

Not so much just today, but for the last 10 weeks I have been building a Sauna--apparently off and on--But, seems more off then on.

3 days ago I finally found a tempered glass door to put on it. My son and I were getting some measurements and figuring out how to make the hinges work. It was all coming together. We started to move it back to lay it down and it went pop! I now have a shower door kit for sale, some assembly required.


Together we got about 14 small nicks, and my son got a pretty good 5/8" gash across the front of his thumb. We watched it for a couple hours but it was still bleeding and we couldn't get a look at the actual cut. I decided to take him to a Walk In Clinic to see if it needed a stitch or two. They took him back and when they took the bandage off, it had stopped bleeding. The said it didn't need any stitches and sent us on our way. He will have a hard time playing his Ukulele and Keyboard for a while. I wanted a stitch or two to hold it closed, so he didn't need to baby it so much.


So today, I shortened a wood door I had bought previously for the Sauna, This may be temporary, but I want to test out and use the sauna, so I'm putting a door on! That is all it needs, everything else is done.

clean it up gently and apply a single steri strip across it if you are worried. It is going to reinforce the cut, but at the expense of some skin irritation.

Yesterday was the busiest day I've had in months. First a trip to pick up herb and veggie plants I'd ordered from a local garden club (this instead of their normal booth at a large garden show) as well as compost, new tomato cages, and lots of yard bags for the post-freeze dead landscape plants. Then I had two ZOOM knitting classes from the online retreat I signed up for, followed by a ZOOM class from my church and another event for the knitting retreat. Picked up takeout ramen for dinner as I had no time nor energy to cook after all that. But it was lots of fun!

Speaking of "kids" getting vaccine, AZ lowered the age to 55+ a week or two ago. Just now, the governor announced the new threshold of 16+! I don't know how hard it will be to get an appointment though.

The only one in my immediate family not yet vaccinated is my son-in-law. I am sure he will be on the state Web site frequently to watch it when they open more slots.

My son did a volunteer stint for 8 hours to get eligibility. My daughter was eligible because of her job. They have had their 1st shot. We will be getting our 2nd Moderna shot this Friday.

We will soon be having gettogethers for dinner. Time to celebrate!

We got up early and drove to Devil's Lake. Followed the top of the bluff on the east side and then hiked along the lake/rocks on the west side. My wife has been wanting to try a new winery so she tasted Balanced Rock's offerings at 11 a.m. We picked up some things for supper at the Mexican grocery store in Sauk City, and were home by 12:30 p.m. I didn't have any wine, but it's still time for a siesta after a busy morning. The winery had this sign on the back bar.

Drove DW 225 miles to a Honda dealer where she picked up her car with its brand new transmission. Then we both drove back home separately. Talk about a boring day!

But she's in the home stretch of deciding on a replacement car, down to a shortlist. I imagine there will be a new one in our garage by the end of the week.

Spring has definitely sprung here; it's 72°F and sunny right now. Feels wonderful!

Changed the oil and checked the air filter on our portable generator. It started on the first pull when I finished, after about 8 months sitting.

For the past couple of tests, I've used the expensive engineered fuel when testing the generator in the hopes of not gumming up the works in storage.

When the blizzard starts we'll all know who's fault it is. I don't put mine away until April 15 just to make sure.

Worked some more on covering the R/C airplane, it's coming along, all but the ailerons have the base cover of white, then I'll start on some color. I'm leaning toward red and blue. I picked white as the main color because it reflects the most light, thus making it easier to see. Most of the color will be on the top and sides where it's most visible when seen on the ground.

If you're one of those people who can't resist looking at an airplane when one flies overhead you've noticed that if the light is right even the white on an airliner at 25,000 feet is visible from the ground.

Isn't that too long of a gap? I thought you were supposed to get them both within a 6 week period. Unless you got the Astra Zeneca one. I think that has a longer gap allowed. But still, 4 months seems extreme.

Mowed the lawn for first time in 2021 this afternoon. About 7 months until mowing ends. Might have been able to wait a week or so, but 70 degrees and dry for few days made it nice to get done today.

I was supposed to go to Denver today. It snowed about 8 inches last night and was still snowing this morning so I cancelled. DS had a minor fender bender so I am headed up to go with him to a you-pull-it wrecking yard to find a mirror and maybe a fender. I hope it is not too muddy. Instead of traveling I finished up my taxes and got them on their way. Glad to get that checked of the list.

Was ready to go hiking for the day and discovered that the faucet in the kitchen had some seepage. So, I had to change out a faucet and took most of the morning. I then packed a lunch and headed for a hike the rest of the day. Got permission from a long time friend to turkey hunt again this spring. This evening went a check on the area I been turkey hunting for about 25 years.

Started control surface installation on the R/C airplane. The stiff wire that connects the servo to the various control surfaces is far too flimsy/flexible to be effective so I'll have to replace that. Fortunately I have some on hand, and the "Z bender" tool to do it. Or I may go with a pull-pull cable system which is far more accurate but not really needed for a sailplane that doesn't go very fast.
