A personal Covid Experience

Just spoke with the ICU nurse looking after him and while he is making great progress he is not out of the woods yet and if the CPAP machine doesn't do it they will have to put him back on the ventilator. He hates the CPAP, saying it is like being in a wind tunnel and the nurse said that she has agreed that it will be 1 hour on, 1 hour off, but overnight he has to be on CPAP because breathing is naturally light while sleeping and he needs to keep up a good flow of air into his lungs. When not on CPAP he has an oxygen feed through the nose.

Hot damn! Great progress!

Maybe not out of the woods just yet, but a sunlit clearing is in sight ahead. Continued prayers for Jeffrey's improving strength, for the skill and dedication of his medical caregivers, and for the comfort of his parents.

We were both working in the greenhouse when the phone in my zipped pocket started playing the Imperial Death March from Star Wars. Had to scramble to put down tools and retrieve my phone.

Absolutely amazing to get to talk to him. We were hoping that they were going to be successful bringing off the ventilator today but never expected to talk to him.

Don't have a photo of his CPAP space helmet but I imagine it looks a bit like this.

Tell Jeffrey his internet fans want a picture of the space helmet!!

We all will continue our prayers every day.

I got all teared up when I read that HE CALLED YOU!

Such wonderful news. I hope he continues to improve.

Great way to start the week!

Well, parents, that is the most wonderful news! Yay!

Sounded like Jeffrey was so uncomfortable that he wasn’t getting the rest he needed for his lungs to heal until they put him on the ventilator.

I wonder what his coworkers think about how serious the disease was for him. Did others get sick? I sure hope his office can be more careful.

Alan, that is great news to hear about your son coming off the vent! Will continue to send healing thoughts to help keep the recovery going without a return to the vent. Thanks for keeping us informed.

So glad Jeffery is off the vent. Reading your family’s story has really touched me. It actually made me get off my bum and find a vaccine appointment.

Wishing your whole family well!

I was so happy to get your latest update!

I can't believe you got to talk to him; I wasn't expecting that so soon. That's just wonderful. :)

Here is to continued progress, and maybe (?) a good night's sleep for you and your DW - probably the first one in more than ten days.

Happy day!

Your son may get out of the hospital soon. I suspect your wife already thinks of a meal to welcome him home. What's his favorite dish?

I wish you comfort, peace, and a happy outcome. With all of my heart.

Wonderful to hear about Jeffery's improvement!

The CPAP helmet sounds like the ones that were being used extensively in Italy this past year. They're manufactured by a Texas company, Sea-Long Medical Systems. There's a photo and article here

That's really interesting; thank you for sharing. It certainly looks less invasive for the patient.

Toss up between an Indian curry, Fish & Chips or roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. His aunt has promised to cook him a steak pie. (She is an excellent cook)

Thanks for that, I’m sure that is exactly what he has been wearing.

Another FaceTime session this morning with Jeffrey. He spent the night on the CPAP machine in the space helmet but feels he won’t need it during the day. All very encouraging.

He says they want him to eat yogurt this morning for breakfast and even though he doesn’t normally like it we told him to do as he is told as the powerful antibiotics he has been on to combat the secondary infection will have devastated his gut bacteria.

Wow, more great news! He must be feeling much more comfortable!

Surely they also have pharmaceutical grade probiotics to help reestablish the gut flora.
