Daily WORDLE - 2022

I didn't realize the word could have the same letter in it twice. I haven't seen that yet but again am only on day 4. If that's true, I'll have to adjust my strategy, because I had been assuming unique letters in my guessing process.

Yes, it can have the same letter twice. A few days ago it was ABBEY. Jimmy Fallon's video posted earlier shows that one.

Yes, I’ve added Wordle to my morning routine. So now it’s Wordle, Spelling Bee, the Daily Mini at NYT (competing for shortest time against the “kids”) and the NYT daily crossword.

If I finish all those word games, in the evenings I do Sudoku.

I love Sudoku. I am better with numbers than I am words.

No. Because everyone else is doing it.

Sorta like Farmville and Candy Crush.

I completely understand your point of view. I am the same way, nearly all of the time, not just with games, but also TV shows, films, musical artists, etc. If something is very popular, there is a perverse side to my personality that makes me not want to partake. I get it. However, a former co-worker, who is now a lawyer, and who I have a great respect for, was who I found out about it from. She persuaded me to try it, and I'm glad I did. It's simple to understand, the interface is very simple, it's engaging, and fun. Not at all like what I imagine Farmville, Candy Crush, and other similar games, would be like. The "bling" factor is very low indeed.

Once the NYT Daily Mini Crossword screwed up and showed my solving time as "0" seconds. It's kind of a hard record to beat. :) But I try to keep it under 1 minute, 25 seconds as a personal goal each day.

I also do the Jumble every day--a lifetime habit from the daily newspaper; but now using the App.

I used to be good at MasterMind; but now find that the Jumble is the right level of hard for ER. So, I haven't tried WORDLE.

I’ve been playing for a week. Today I got it in 2. I use a first word with 3 vowels and 2 very common consonants. Got 3 hits so solving was easy.
The other days 3 in 5 and 3 in 6.
100% solved so far.
I also have the app WhatWord that lets you play all day.
I’m not sure that’s a good idea.

I'm not good with some forms of word games, but this was fun, I picked up on some strategy, taking my time on this first try, and got it in 4.

That was fun, I can see doing that once a day. Copy/paste the 'share' worked OK for me on Firefox and Xubuntu Linux.

I also assumed that an orange(?), which means 'the letter is used, but not in this space', could appear more than once, as could a green 'the letter is used in this space', could also be used in another space.

So far nobody has volunteered that they didn't get the word after 6 tries. This has got to make a few readers feel really dumb or we just have only brilliant folks on this forum.

Maybe they are just not talking!

But I got 2 clues on my first guess (one direct hit and one 'right letter'), so that helps and some is just luck. One less, and I may not have made it.

After the fact, I realize using more vowels on the 1st guess is probably smart on average. I'll do that next time.

I'm below average at word games, but above average at spoiling games with too much analysis

I didn't spend too much time on this, but the above 3 words gives me 84.2% coverage. Can anyone think of three words higher than 84%? A puzzle within a puzzle!!
...

But I think you have to give more weight to vowels that just their frequency. Since there are only 5/6 vowels, a negative hit really reduces the remaining options. More so than eliminating a consonant. Don't know how to factor that, but it seems to deserve a higher weight.

But for determining vowels, sengsational's AUDIO is a very good one though. LOUIE might be better since E is more frequent than A and L is more frequent than D in english, but since that's a name I don't know if it's valid. Might try that the next time.

Edit: LOUIE is accepted as a guess, so names are ok - though I hope none of the answers are names.

I’ll admit to not getting the word, but I screwed up. I thought the gold/yellow letters were in the right space. Didn’t figure that out to be wrong until I got a green one in row three. By then I was too far underwater. Oh well, we’ll see how I do going forward.

I’ll add it to my routine. Similar to a few others, I do the spelling bee and the NYT mini every morning. I like them because they get me thinking but they’re short enough to not encompass my day. A major flaw I have is that I need to finish. So, if I paid for Spelling Bee, for example, it would kill me if I couldn’t get all the words. The free version cuts you off after a few words - good enough for me.

I use suite for my first word. Board for the second depending on what shows up with the first word.
That gives me all 5 vowels.

ROYAL would get that pesky Y in there as well for the second word. So many possibilities!

I will admit to not getting the word one time--it was the day a letter was used twice in the word. To me that makes it much harder.

There is a wordle result tracker bot on twitter. It pulls from the stats everyone posts each day (the share result block - no words or letters, but rows and completion).

Every day it shows about 2-4% share not getting the answer. I'm sure there are many more who skip sharing that day!

I was really stuck at 3. I ended up writing down all the possibilities for 2 char based on what I knew and what I could eliminate, and it finally jumped out at me. I should probably let the caffeine kick in first, my 2nd guess, I could have used a variation of my selection that included a very common letter.

Hmmm, sharing these blocks can be a bit of a spoiler if those people have also discussed their 1st words... I haven't, but I think from now on, I'll just say "Got it in 4".

I'm hooked!!
AND I hooked my DH too.

Two days, two wins but had to use all 6 both times.

Thanks to OP for giving me this daily fun!

I've been playing several days a week and each time I've solved it in 4 tries. Very odd.

Got it in 5, but was starting to get nervous as I was stuck on 3 correct letters for a few guesses.

Yeah. I got todays word. I was worried that I’d fail again and have no excuses for not knowing the rules.

ETA: Now I just need to figure out how to show my results. It looked fine when I pasted it into my post, but when I submitted it, the colors turned into ?? ?? marks.

The pasted results should show if it was in hard mode the whole time... it's three different games. Hard mode, normal mode gut feel, and normal mode prescribed word (letter coverage).

I got today's in 5 with little effort with the nivin 4 word set.

ETA: I tried my word set in a private tab, just for grins. Worked similarly, but not quite as obvious as the nivin set. BTW, instead of BIGFY (beer is good for you), I discovered that bigly is acceptable and gets coverage up to almost a nivin level. And if that brings something to mind, please don't go there.

I have not tried the Sengsational approach (of getting lots of coverage in three words, then piece together that info). I have only tried a "good" (i.e., high-letter frequency) starting word, then taken it from there.

However, I took the first 15 letters from Sengsational's list, put them into an anagram solver, and asked for a list of all the sets of 3 words of 5 letters each.

I was amazed to find that there are 4349 such combinations. (E.g., Decal Humor Pints, or Caned Thrum Spoil.) Any of these combinations give 87.5% coverage.

^ And that explains more to me why Hard Mode exists. If you just type in the same first three great coverage words, I think it's less fun. Hard Mode prevents a "AUDIO RENTS GLYPH" approach. I may turn Hard Mode on for that reason.

ETA: Got it in five today in Hard Mode.
