2022 Tax Program Deals

I got a copy of HRB some years ago just because I wanted to try it out. Did my taxes in parallel with both TT and HRB to see if there would be any difference.

Turned out that they use different rounding methods (I don't know if that's still true) and HRB had me paying a dollar more in total tax. So I've stuck with TT ever since. Over a lifetime that would amount to some serious money!

Do I get this week's Cheapskate award?

Since I can get HRB every year for at least $15 less than TT that $1 in savings can be costly.

Now if you're getting it free from Fidelity then we're talkin

Another free option is AARP Foundation Tax Aide. They have limitations for what scope of return they can prepare, but they can do a surprisingly wide range of returns.

There is no charge. You're not required to be an AARP member, or of any age. They can prepare federal and state, and e-file for you, usually while you wait and usually in about an hour, and will provide hardcopy printouts of your tax returns. If you're nice, they may even provide some advice or suggestions regarding how to reduce your tax liability.

And if you do like I did and become a volunteer, not only do you get to prepare other people's taxes for free, you also can do your own and any friends and family member returns for free as well.

VITA is another similar program.
I just got a call from a Tax Aide coordinator today regarding my volunteer application. I think I passed the phone interview so now I wait to hear from the local contact about what comes next. I'm really excited about it, I'm always looking to learn something new and I love to help anyone when I can but this is my first volunteer position, I not normally the volunteering type so we'll see how it goes. I'll probably continue to use Turbotax for my own taxes this year since I always pass it along to my daughter for her to use.

Nice!

They probably run things a bit differently from area to area.

In general, you can probably expect to attend about 30 to 40 hours of training between now and late January. You'll learn tools, processes, ethics, security, and individual income taxes (likely federal and state). You then are required to take and pass three open book multiple choice exams, probably in mid- to late-January.

After that, around here, you'd sign up for the sites and shifts you want to work. Then once or twice a week (or more) you'd volunteer preparing people's taxes through early April.

TaxAide (currently) uses TaxSlayer, which doesn't really have any of the interview question style stuff that TT does. I personally like TS better because I know what applies to me and what doesn't.

Pikers. Not worth messing with them. They should be embarrassed to offer those tiny bonus amounts.

Capital One 360 savings account offers $100 for a $10,000 deposit and $500 for $50,000. You just have to leave the money there for 90 days.
Ally savings gives you 1% of your deposit, up to $500 ($50K). Just have to leave the money there until Jan 15.

One key difference between the set of offers is that one is for brokerage/retirement, and the other is for cash savings. Two different animals for me personally.

I’ve gotten free state and Fed from Fido for several years now.

YE2022 TurboTax Deals

Anyone found any good TurboTax deals for 2022 taxes?

Anyone found any good TurboTax deals for 2022 taxes?

For the past 10 years or so, I have found that Amazon has good deals on Turbotax between Christmas and New Year's. I get the Deluxe version with one state included, and it's always $39.95 plus sales tax.

But, given the inflation rate this year, I would not be surprised if it was more. :banghead:

Right now it's $55.99 .

If Fidelity doesn’t gift us the TurboTax Premier, we buy the Deluxe at Costco or Amazon waiting for the $39.95 price.

Last year's best Amazon price for Deluxe was $37.99, in late November.

Have downloaded it an yes, some very important parts are missing. I can't update Medical deductions, Pension income or IRA withdrawals.
TT UPDATES Today...

TT updates available today now allow you to input medical deductions but it won't allow IRA withdrawal info input until 12/8/22 (estimated)...

Good catch on the Newegg deal. I just downloaded my copy.

Newegg has H&R Block tax software for 1/2 price with the code on the website.

deluxe is $17.50 , deluxe + state is $22.50 , premium is $32.50

Pretty decent deal.

I bought it there, and the download link is at hrblock.com (legit)
Got it, thanks. My copy came from Best Buy (at least that's what it said on the download page). I don't care which of the many servers they are using to serve the download traffic. Everything installed as expected and I got confirming emails for HRB.

This year, it looks like Amazon is not discounting lower than the HRB store/HRB website. Maybe later in the year.
