Blow That Dough - 2022

Many years ago (90s) I was a stone cold broke single mom not getting child support (awarded $1 a yr), working 2 jobs to keep the lights on. Put in a dented $50 open box special cooktop to replace a broken one.

Have an appointment Thursday to get a replacement, appointment Tuesday to get solid strand bamboo floors, and looking at new sofas for family room. Next 2 cruises covered with FCC so why not?

BTD at $23,400 for Mom's funeral; 1 day visitation, small catered wake for 25, beautiful casket exactly like Dad's, only 16 years later. She and Dad taught us 4 kids well.

I'd say you've earned it to BTD! Be sure to take pictures and share if you wish. Aloha.

You have done well, now you can enjoy of all those years of hard work.

I am sorry for your loss, Winemaker.

I am sorry for your loss; you did your DM proud.

In my case, DM passed first, but I too matched DF's to DM's casket/ wake, etc. (although DF had police and naval escorts).

I matched DF’s to DM’s as well; it’s how I convinced DF to prepay for his. “Dad, you want exactly the same that we did for Mom a couple months ago, just no little flowers carved into the wooden casket, right?” He agreed, and we got that signed and paid for. Years later, it made our family’s life easier when he passed.

Going out to see a forty one foot trawler tomorrow.

So now I'm thinking of replacing the breakfast room, kitchen, family room, laundry room, 1/2 bath with the bamboo. It says it's warranted 40 years residential use but it is not engineered bamboo. So I don't know how it stands up against water. Here's my problem. My ex son-in-law, father to 2 of my grandkids, puts in floors. I can buy the the material at a relatively good price and he'd want me to do that so its just a labor charge. But the last time I asked him for an estimate on something he was twice the next guy. I could say because his father of 2 of the kids That the money filters down to help them. Except here's the problem. One of those kids is 20 and sleeps here almost every night. The other 1 is 15 going on 16 and has moved in during the school year. And I get no money for them. So do I let him bid and tell him that he will be bidding against at least 2 other people?

It sounds like you are doing YOUR part for the family by allowing GKs to squat as needed. No need to "over pay" if his bid is high. YOU would not be taking advantage of anyone by keeping it on a business-like basis. Yeah, I'd tell him he is bidding against others. Good luck. Family is tricky sometimes and YMMV.

Booked our trip to Glacier National Park. The Parks lodges rep asked " We have properties in Yellowstone too. Would you be interested in staying at Yellowstone as well?"
Sure - Why not - Yellowstone is almost on our way to Glacier.

Going with my sister and a bunch of her friends on an overnight stay at Silcox Hut above Timberline Lodge, on Mt. Hood. Catered dinner and b'fast, for $260. My sister was surprised when I wanted to go, saying she didn't think I'd want to spend the $$. I replied with "Blow that dough", now that I've FIREd (though I'm still inherently frugal!)

Also want to finally build a deck in the backyard. Blowing that dough would mean hiring a contractor, which will double the cost. If it gets it done though would be worth it. Just hope my contractor is available.

And travel plans....Ireland to visit relatives, then ferry to Brittany to hike along the coast and maybe meet a friend for another week's hike. Then in fall go to France for 6 months to study and do more in-depth research on moving there long term.

I am so sorry for your loss. It does sound like you did well for your Mom. Blessings to you.

I understand Silcox is wonderful! It was one of the places DD thought about for her wedding a few years ago. They will transport you on one of their big SnowCats from Timberline, I think.
Enjoy!

I'd let him bid, but know you are looking at others.
My BIL did our insurance for years, I finally looked around and found and got it a LOT cheaper. Wasn't getting a family special after all

He and his wife are still going to HI next week, so it doesn't seem to hurt him that he missed my business.

I would go ahead and hire someone else. Tell him that if there was a problem with the flooring or installation, it could become awkward. You wanted to be able to yell at a non-family stranger to get it corrected.

THAT is an excellent approach. How could you (realistically) argue with it? YMMV of course.

Somehow got wrangled into going to a custom closet place with DW today. Holy crap! That stuff is expensive. Having the whole closet done with custom cabinets. Any guesses on what that runs? I could not believe it. But somehow they got my credit card number and are coming in two weeks to install it. I need to stay home tomorrow when we visit the cabinet folks for a quote to put in a bar in the basement. We've had two quotes for $48k and passed on those.

We decided we are going to travel next year no matter what, so I put down a deposit on a 2023 cruise. Big bucks, but kind of exciting to be able to start planning things, even though it's still way too early to make the plans concrete yet.

Have appointment to go see another boat tomorrow. Forty four foot trawler with twin diesels. Has been upgraded to electric toilets with sanitizers. Hoping this boat will not have the dreaded "bad smells"

If they are fish smells you know that is a "working" boat! :D

Hmmmm. Sounds like "BTD Creep!" Seriously, hope it goes well. We are counting on you to set a high standard for us.

Trying to keep it under a hundred grand - :)
