On the topic of racks, I’ll be contrarian… I’m a big advocate of transporting our bikes inside the vehicle. You don’t need a big car. I routinely carry two full-size adult road bikes in my Honda Fit, shown below, with plenty of room for additional stuff. The front wheels are removed for carrying inside. I have fit three bikes on occasion.
Carrying bikes inside is logistically easier for me than using a rack (especially a roof rack), and you get some weather protection. I can leave the car for an errand or at a restaurant and have a level of security for the bikes. And once my bike was on the rear rack of a friend’s car, and we were rear-ended… wrecking both the bikes and car.
So if your vehicle and new bikes will allow, carrying them inside may be an option, and will save you the cost of a rack as well.
