How much does it cost you to run your home (2022)? - See first post for criteria.

3,400 square foot (finished area) home, built in the late 1970s, in the Mid-Atlantic. 2022 figures:

1) Mortgage: $0
2) Rent: $0
3) HOA: $0
4) Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance: $0 (part of general home maintenance)
5) Electricity: $2,600
6) Gas: $0
7) Water: $0
8) Internet: $1,200 (excludes cable TV)
9) Umbrella, Auto, Flood & Home Insurance: $3,382
10) Pest Control: $0 (mouse traps and wasp spray part of general home maintenance)
11) HVAC Maintenance Contract: $200
12) Property Tax: $5,211
13) General Home Maintenance: $1,977

Total: $14,570 for 2022. $1,215/month.

Item 13 of course is variable. So far this year that category is over $3K due to appliance replacement and HVAC issues. for 2018-2022 the average for this item was $4,900 a year or $409/month. A more realistic result might be $17,493, or $1,458/month.

I have the info as utilities are broken out by type in Quicken plus HOA and home maintenance, but it’s way too much work to retrieve it! (And I basically don’t care anymore.)
I thought Quicken was supposed to make these things easier?

You didn't include earthquake & umbrella insurance but I've got that so it bumps insurance costs significantly. Monthly costs: Screenshot_20230905-022939_Sheets.jpg

Last year was just under $12K for a 1300 sqft townhome in FL. No mortgage and no lumpy expenses incurred. HOA covers the shell so lumpy will be limited to the A/C and occasional major appliance repair/replacement so perhaps another $250/mo sinking fund allowance would bring it to about $15K.

Some are simply numbers though if we do not know what state they are in. I wish they would have indicated which one. Some folks seem to live really cheaply compared to others. I may consider moving there if I knew the state. Another good reference would be how long one has been in their home. I may do a similar post in 2024 (assuming I live that long) with State and Length of time in current home as items 1 & 2.

For our brand new 2500 sq ft twin home in Chester County PA: $1800-$2000 per month for everything but repairs. I gave a range since we’ve only lived here since March and haven’t yet gone through a heating season and I don’t think we’ve gotten a water bill.

We saved a bundle by appealing our assessment for property tax. The original assessment would’ve had us paying over $15K a year, the lower assessment brought the property tax down to about $12K.

Since it’s a new build we shouldn’t have major repairs for ten(?) years or so. When it happens, funds will come from savings.

(If you have seen news coverage over the past few days regarding the escaped convict in PA, you’ve got an idea of where I live. Troopers think he’s holed up about a mile or two from our house)

And what is the cost relative to income or assets. For us it’s .4%

2100 sq ft home, NC coast

The $3,000 tree service was a one and done but generally $2K to $3K per year in home services most years anyway. Call in specialists as needed as I prefer to do most repairs myself.

For my NYC 1-BR coop apartment (50 yr old bldg, nice neighborhood):

Maintenance fee: $18,808/yr (includes real estate tax [$9,206], bldg mortgage & maintenance, water, doormen)
Electricity & gas: $1,496
Phone: $1,324 (cell & landline)
Internet & cable: $999
Home insurance: $574
General home maintenance: $591

Total: $23,791/yr, $1,983/mo

3BR/3BA townhouse, Zillow says 3,000 sqft.

Monthly costs:

HOA (includes all outside maintenance, water/sewer) $250

Property tax & home insurance: $300

Electricity & natural gas: $150

Fixed expenses to carry just the house, everything else I consider variable.

E.g. "triple-play" bundle for $200/month...were it just me it'd be internet-only @ $25/month. :)

About 20k yearly on a 2,886 sq ft house.

I am surpised to see all the zeros on pest control. Since the house is an asset , I figure you would at least spray it for ants and the like at least once a year. Maybe you all dont have bugs in other parts of the country?

These are our 2022 results for our 2005 sq. ft. CBS home in Florida built in 2011. We have lived here 4.5 years.

1) mortgage 0
2) rent 0
3) HOA, Trash, Water, sewer 3,169
4) lawn maintenance 1,542
5) electricity 1,586
6) gas 0
7) water, see 3) above
8) internet & streaming 1,707
9) autos (2), home, golf cart 3,952
10) termite, pest control 395
11) HVAC maint contract 0
12) property tax 4,015
13) general house maintenance 9,199

So total for 2022 was $25,565 or $2,130.40 per month. House maintenace was very high because we had the driveway redone. But there are huge swings in that category. Next year we will replace the HVAC and the following year a new roof because home insurance will require it even though the roof would probably be good for at least 5 or 6 more years. After the next two years the house maintenance will be minimal for quite a few years.

Not really. In 35+ years of home ownership, we’ve only had a “bug man” for one year. When we first purchased our vacation home in the woods we had a problem with carpenter ants. They were gone after a year of professional treatment. Nowadays DH does some DIY spraying if necessary.

My pest control is included in the household maintenance budget. Only once did I have to call in an outside contractor, when wasps built a nest in the wall and were coming in thru the vents. But that was 30 years ago, since then the pest control expenses has just been insect spray, wasp/hornet foam spray, various types of mouse traps, and DIY ant control with 20 Mule Team Borax, sugar, and syrup.

These are not needed ever year, and never more than $20-$30 in a year where we do need it. Maybe it is a benefit of living where it gets cold enough to kill all the insects in the winter :).
