Sorry if this has been discussed before...

I am considering transferring assets from Schwab to Vanguard and was wondering about the online access of Vanguard. If my wife and I both have Roth IRAs, can I see both accounts under one login, or do we have to do two separate logins?

Thanks,

In my case, at least, we have separate logins. The I in IRA stands for individual.

I prefer to look at them as S(hared) IRAs. We both work and both contribute our earned income to these accounts. They might be labeled as individual but we both know the assets held are for our combined benefit...thus the shared view.

You can do one login. The procedure is a bit cumbersome, IIRC, but everything can be done online.

Login to your account. Go to account profile>view and modify access to your accounts>add grantee access

I have two different logins at Fidelity as well. We can both see the joint accounts, but the IRA's/Roth's are only available to the owner. I suppose we could send in a form to allow each other access. They do have something like that though I haven't investigated. You might look for something similar at Vanguard.

I have had to oversee my mom's IRA and 403(b) accounts for several years. They are held at different institutions, one of which is Vanguard. With appropriate authorization, I was able to see her Vanguard balances from my single Vanguard login. It's probably easiest just to give them a call to see how you can set this up.

I get a Household account/statement, which allows me to view our joint accounts, and Ms G. and my IRA account on one log on. We both also have Agent Authorization to be able to buy or sell on each others account. Vanguard requires each participant to have their own account and password. Having a joint account may allow to see each others account info, and saying that once set up I believe you will be able to do a Agent Authorization and view all accounts together. Vanguards term of service say roughly, only you or your agent is allowed to use someones password to gain access to an account, even with their full knowledge or marital status.

DW and I have Vanguard IRA's and a joint after-tax account. We have separate log-ons. My IRA and the joint account show on my log-on. DW's IRA and the joint account show on her log-on.

Quicken is our main financial tool. I download Vanguard and various other financial institutions into Quicken on a daily basis for our total view.

Schwab requires a power of attorney to be completed to set it up, but they allow one login to see both spouse's IRAs. They also allow account "groups" so that one can see various subsets of the total accounts belonging to the household.

Anxious to hear a definitive response to the OP's question as I am also seriously considering the switch and I like this particular feature of Schwab's on-line access.

DH and I have separate VG logons but both of us granted each other access as FIREd described above. So both of us can see our entire VG portfolio from our own individual logon. Works great.

Here is a brief summary of what Vanguard lets you give access to:

Account types eligible for Inquiry access, Limited authority, and Full authority:
Individual nonretirement
Joint
IRA
Non-ERISA 403(b)(7)

Account types eligible for Inquiry access and Limited authority only:
Individual 401(k)*
Organization or corporate*
Trust*
UGMA/UTMA, custodial, or education savings
Vanguard Retirement Investment program*
* These account types aren't eligible for the online process. To add a grantee, submit an Agent Authorization form.

So, you can grant full or partial access to your taxable and IRA accounts.

Personally, I find it just as easy to log out as one person and then log back in as the other person. It only takes a few seconds.

You will need to have two separate logins. However you can set it up to include DW's accounts if you have her login and password and view all your accounts combined. That's is what I do because when I run a Portfolio Watch of Financial Engines report I want to see everything.
