My current pet peeve is people who consider themselves experts on everything medical because “my husband is a doctor”.. and the like.
I’ve heard twice just today two different people say “well I should know because my husband is a doctor”.
So true. But what's worse is when the person is actually a doctor and they don't know what they are talking about. This is a big peeve of mine. Case in point:
My wife fell off her horse and injured her shoulder joint but didn't want to go to the doctor. Her shoulder seemed pretty normal except when she raised her arm in a certain way (like to put on a t-shirt) she had searing pain. Finally after a week of this she agreed to let me take her to the hospital (because her GP was backed up for weeks).
The ER doc had a look at it and tried to send her home with a sling, saying it would heal fine on it's own. I disagreed with him and said there is a serious problem here, I don't think it's going to heal fine on it's own and, at a minimum, she needs an x-ray to check it out.
He said, no, it's fine. I said it needs an x-ray. This went on and on for over three or four iterations and finally he said he had other patients to see and we had to leave. I said "well, we are not leaving before we get an x-ray unless escorted out by the police under arrest."
Again, he told me an x-ray wasn't necessary and I had to repeat my ultimatum at which point he rolled his eyes, said he would send my wife in for an x-ray but it was completely unnecessary and accused me of "playing doctor".
After the x-ray the ER doc came back to talk with us and he said "It's a good thing you came in here to have that checked out because you have broken your (some bone at the top of the shoulder joint) and it could cause you shoulder problems for the rest of your life if not dealt with immediately. I've scheduled surgery for tomorrow morning so the loose bone can be screwed together in the right position. If you had waited even two or three more days it would be outside the window for the bone to fuse together properly."
He didn't apologize and basically ignored that I had to risk being arrested to even get a basic x-ray. Yes, I'm still mad at how arrogant he was. Fortunately, my lovely wife's shoulder made a complete recovery (it took over 6 months after the surgery) and she is able to ride her horse again without any issues.
