I don't understand the hype, since the science of passing fats is nothing new. Is it all just that--hype?

Snake oil.

It all is so darn funny watching anyone believe a pill will help them lose weight. I have a neighbor that swears those herbal wraps help you lose weight and inches!!

Yea I told her what it melts your fat!!She actually said YES!!

Nuts to me she still looks fat. Oh well if it makes these people feel like they are doing something. So they can still eat like there is no tomorrow.

Bottom line to lose weight you must burn 3500 calories to lose a pound.

eat less and exercise more. Nothing fancy, it is really that simple. Only one problem walking or jogging 1 mile burns about 100 calories , one cookie is about 100 calories, a slice of bread is about 100 calories a slice of cheese is about 100 calories a beer is 170 calories even the light beers are a 100 calories.

Soooo that is why you need to run 10 miles a day!!!

Eating a bit less vs random anal leakage - sounds like a tough choice

ooey ooey ooey :p

That sounds gross, but some folks are obviously prepared to try anything otherwise they wouldn't even attempt to market it. A few years ago olestra was the new saviour to the overweight and again in the warnings it said that "oily stools" could be a side effect.

Alli only takes about 30% of the fat in your system out with a stool (ooooooh, hit me with the dirty talk, baby). For those times someone overeats alot of fat, like a giant pepperoni pizza, Alli would give them diahrrea or loose stools or gas, I strongly suspect.
If you don't have much fat in your food, you can skip the Alli.

Since I need to knock off pounds right now, I thought I would: #1 go low calorie, low fat (10-15 grams of fat a day total); and #2 take Alli when I ate too much fat at a meal, so it would...uh..pass thru my system (putting it delicately).
Well, the other day I made a pizza from scratch using Kraft brand low fat mozzarella, lots of tomato, spinach, red onion and parmesan. OK...so I ate the whole thing myself (yes!); of course, I did this only as a favor to all those starving kids in China my mother told me about. I don't eat that much normally, but this was the day's meal totally. OK..I felt like pigging out that day to be honest.
Anyway, the gist of this is: I sat and waiting for all the gas, all the loose stools and other side effects...and.....nothing. I mean nothing!!!! Where were the terrible side effects of Alli:confused:?
I guess the 45 grams of fat in the mozzarella are still not enough for the Alli to kick you into diarrhea mode, so, unless you eat alot (more than 45 grams) of fat every day, I wouldn't worry about the side effects.
Myself, I am eating about 10-15 fat grams total a day--even tho Alli recommends 15 a meal. I lost weight--and felt great--doing this before, and feel it is a pretty healthy way to go for me.
Now if I could just continue this for life I might make it to 90 like I want to...
Anyway, don't let the side effects of Alli scare you away from trying it.

It sounds like it has some side effects.

I do not have a weight problem, so I do not have personal experience. But, it seems that is one is obese and contemplating surgical procedure for basic health reasons, this might be a more attractive alternative... if it works and the side effects are only temporary.

Do you mean you only ate once that day?

Most of the non-fad type info I've read recommends eating many small, low-calorie meals/snacks throughout the day. Don't go more than 4 hours w/o eating. Has to do with metabolism riding up and down. Body starts conserving energy and stores fat when it senses it won't be getting fed for a while.

Sumo Wrestlers follow that regimen. One, maybe two big meals a day. Seems to 'work' for them!

No, it took me a whole day to down one large pizza as I was stuffed. Last time I am going to try that, too...whew...enough is enough. Burp...
Actually, I eat something every 3 hours or so now. I love this style of eating better than two or three meals a day, myself. I feel lighter for some reason doing this.

If you are trying to lose weight, I have three guaranteed methods in order of efficacy. Get a long febrile illness; get divorced; or go on a high protein, low carb diet. Their pleasantness is in reverse order to efficacy, as unfortunately is so often the case.

Alli might work for the less difficult cases.
