Are you lucky?

One time on a run I found $7 on the street. I recently filed an amended tax return, for an additional $247 refund (per TurboTax). Double lucky - it only took 2 weeks for the IRS to send the check, and the amount they sent was.... $254.
I guess when it comes to money windfalls $7 is my lucky number.

Lucky, no. Persistent and attentive, yes. With that combo, I feel luck is a by-product, or perhaps this is skill.

I've been pretty fortunate, but I've been pretty unfortunate at times as well. I feel relatively lucky being born, the more I think about it though.

I was lucky to be born healthy in Europe ...
Sorry, my post was a bit jingoistic. Probably I should have said I was lucky to have been born in an OECD country. :) The USA is not the only lucky place to land.

Me too- except female. ...
Sorry, again. Nothing against females but thinking purely in an economic context/this forum, I think it is financially luckier to be born male.

I feel lucky when I'm walking on the road and find drywall screws or nails. Pick them up and toss in the next trash can I see. Figure someone won't have a bad day and the world is a bit better.

I feel grateful and lucky for many things, too many to list all here, but this thread makes me think of some:

Not being aborted, (which was a real choice for me).
Being born in a good country.
Got great caring parents who taught me good values.
Found a $50 bill in parking lot.
Met my DW.

The tax folks, saw I did my return wrong, phoned me leaving message, (I called back and answered their questions) they fixed my return, did an extra special return for me, and then paid me interest on the over $8,000 EXTRA refund they declared for me.

I'm lucky. The joint probability of being born in the US, white, male, healthy, and to college graduate parents ....
Born in Canada. Luckily it is a socialist country which enabled my high school educated parents to live well. I had the airforce reserves to help me through college, and The Ford Foundation to sponsor my post-grad. The air force sent me to France before my final year in college.

Everyone thought I was lucky. I had to agree with them, although I knew that I had a hand in making it happen. I always took the harder path that offered higher rewards.

I found a $20 bill blowing around the grocery store parking lot. Didn't see anyone around who might have dropped it, so into my pocket it goes. As I checked out, I noticed a frantic man talking to the manager, saying he had gotten $20 cash back from his purchase but now couldn't find it, and maybe the cashier hadn't handed it to him. "I wonder if I dropped it", says the man. "Yes you did and I found it, and here it is", I said, handing him the $20. His terrible day turned into a restoration of faith in humanity. I felt lucky to have been a part of it.

Bravo. I would do the same. The good feeling is worth much more than the 20 bucks. Both for you and the man who lost the money.

I got a kidney/pancreas transplant within approx a month of being dead.

Twenty two years ago.

I may be lucky in an unusual way: I married my only wife 42 years ago. And I am an extremely happy person.

Only really needed luck once. Drew a 288 in the draft lottery in the early 70's (lower numbers went first). Never had to go to Vietnam.

I got lucky on that one too, at 256.

A good friend drew #1 but it didn't matter. He was already a Marine in Da Nang. He did get back with all appendages intact.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. My life has been pretty interesting that way.

Great article. I agree with the lucky vs unlucky experiments. Have always had my eyes wide open and it has rewarded me handsomely my entire life.

Thanks for sharing the article.

Enjoyable movie.

All of us are lucky!

If you think you are not, imagine yourself being born into a country where commuting to work on a train means something like this.

Don't women get to ride on the outside?

They most likely get tired of all the "accidental" body contact.

Friend married a Japanese woman. The stories she told of being groped as a young teenager on the subway by middle aged men were scary. Because of the close quarters, she usually did not even know who was doing it.

I’m beyond lucky, I’ve been blessed with the outcome of my life, I’ve had lucky and unlucky streaks but the story of my life can’t be anything but a blessing.
