Had a late lunch at my favorite bakery, then to library to read newspapers, and ended up Early Voting for city council/judges. There was no line at all.

Day Trip

Impromptu day trip to Great Falls national park in Northern Virginia. Great day for a hike!

Cooked up some home made Anderson’s Split Pea Soup in an Instapot. Kicked back all day with hubby as we proudly did nothing. Burned some brain power thinking about relatives in So-Cal. We had our years in Camarillo of mudslide season, floods, and arson, Santa Ana Fire season. A beautiful place in its time, but not for me anymore.

Last week, bought shucked oysters at Blau Oyster Co at the end of the road on Sammish Island. Cool place! Amazing view of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands!

Made a complex oyster stew. The recipe from The Joy of Cooking is simpler and better.

Dog unexpectedly got his walk this morning as it was in between rain showers. Then I went out to make a 2-hour circle trip: early voting, gym, sell a box of books at Half-Price Books, and return an erroneous Amazon purchase at the UPS store (I goofed and ordered a weather station without humidity display).

This afternoon I need to finish clearing out the bookshelves and electronics in the family room as the floor is being replaced tomorrow. Hopefully the saga of the leaking-toilet-while-on-vacation will soon be over.

DW informed me that she does not want me to do any more painting anywhere in the house for at least the next two weeks. She says it is disruptive to her routine.

Reluctantly, I agreed.

We went to a matinee showing of the Downton Abbey movie. The young wife just finished binge watching all six seasons of the show. She sometimes had difficulty understanding the servants, so I was occasionally called in to translate. Otherwise, I avoided it. I understand it was very popular, but I just could not see the allure.

picklelball,

visited my MIL

golf with brother,

grocery shopped,

visited my old neighbors,

Ueberdriver for DW, who had dinner with former co-workes...

I'm tired.

DW has the solution for all the English dramas-She turns on the closed captions:angel: That will work for speech, but not local idioms. I once watched a show where one of the character remarked,"You are as pink as the Financial Times". Unless you knew somehow that the London newspaper was printed on salmon colored paper, the message was lost on you.

Have you inquired with the neighbors to see if any of them can use some free painting labor?

Helped a friend move his 1966 Corvair to a repair shop after it quit running. I think the carburetors started to flood as a result of the ethanol in the gasoline eating away at the float needle valve tips (rubber). I've seen this before with the old classic VW I restored.

Once we had it on my dolly, we headed the 25 miles to the only close shop in the area that can service this old baby. Once we got started, the sky opened up and we had about 2" of rain. Ugh!

Wife hit FRA today, & filed her SS application.

Before any comments, we ran the numbers, & she would have had to reach age 124 before the income break-even if she'd waited to age 70 to file. Not everyone's situation is the same.

Hiked Elena Canyon at Big Bend National Park. I saw Balanced Rock yesterday.

I had a '65 coupe. I miss it.

My younger wife (24 years younger) is from Peru and doesn't speak much English. I don't speak much Spanish...

We enjoy Netflix which has Spanish subtitles and we go to movies in the cinema which always have Spanish subtitles. We go in the afternoons when there are no crowds.

As a retiree (Pensionado Visa) here in Panama I pay only $3.00 for a movie, $6.75 for my wife. A larger popcorn and 2 sodas cost $10.50. A trip to the movies costs about $20 for us. Tomorrow we will go see the new Terminator movie.

Went up to the mall. While DW looked for a particular item, I wandered into the men's section......saw a pair of pants advertised as "XL Slim Fit (W)" - how does that work?

This was quite a week so far. We are in SoCal and subject to those power outages due to high winds.
Monday we bought a generator and got it assembled, running and hooked to our freezer, fridge, and ice maker.

DW, genius that she is, suggested I buy a couple of small battery operated lanterns. She also found a moving strap so we can pull the fridge out to get to the plug.
I also bought some adapters and a power strip to run the TV.
To solve the fridge problem long term, I bought a 6 foot appliance rated extension cord so I did not have to pull the fridge out again.
DW has a direct reading remote meat thermometer that will go to -40. I put the sensor in the fridge to track the temperature to see if I needed to get the generator going.
Well, after all that preparation, we were wakened at 3:30 this AM by the UPS alarm. We went back to sleep, after using the little lanterns to get around, and then went out to breakfast. After breakfast, we took a drive along the ocean, and I picked up some driftwood.
A few minutes after we got home, the power came on, much to our delight. I checked the fridge temperature, and found it had only risen 3 degrees in 8 hours, This gives me an idea for when we need the generator. If the outage had continued, I would have cranked up the generator so we could watch TV in the evening.

Bought a new toilet a few days ago for the master bath. Got it during a periodic 11% off sale at Menards. Went to install it today. It was broken. Packed it up and returned it. Wanted the same model - they didn't have any more in stock. Settled for a different model.

The 11% discount is no longer in place at the store, and since I exchanged it for a different model, my 11% rebate is no longer valid. All because I exchanged it for a different model - which I was forced to because they longer had my model in stock.

I talked to the manager and he said there was nothing he could do. I'm taking my case to corporate.

Anyway, I installed the new one and it is fine.

Souschef, our hearts go out to all Californians dealing with this situation. Sounds like you and your DW are doing OK so far, thank goodness. We wish for the best possible outcomes for you two and for all others affected by these fires and/or power outages.

Lena learned a lesson about when to keep her mouth shut:

I was going out to run and saw a dead quail on the ground. They sometimes commit suicide by flying into our windows. I picked it up.

Lena opened the door. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to eat it."

"No way. That's gross. Leave it out here for the foxes."

I thought about it for a while. "Well, the only reason I'm not going to cook it is I don't know when it died." We'd just gotten back from a three-day trip.

"It just died now—I heard it bang into the window."

It only took me five minutes to skin and clean it. I'll put it in the slow cooker tomorrow.
