I subbed middle school math and high school math this week. Yes, basic arithmetic done without a cell phone or calculator is a completely lost art if these kids are any example. It's frightening.

Even worse is that many of the people who are inept at math are proud of their inability.

Taking an all-day AARP driver ed class. And I have questions .... (where DO you put your foot and hands when using the new lane keeping and adaptable cruise control functions?)

Time for some bragging about our 8 year old grandson. Three times now he’s shown some real financial wisdom that would endear him to our community.

First, when his folks had a carpeting salesperson in for an estimate, he followed the man and asked multiple times “what’s wrong with the carpeting we have and why can’t we just keep using it?

A week ago, on our last visit, after school when it was snack time I offered him a piece of chocolate, then said he could have two if he waited ‘til our get together Thanksgiving, a week later. He looked at me and said “That’s dumb. Of course I’ll wait.”

Last, and best of all, DD called me yesterday to tell me her DH, over dinner, said he was thinking about getting a new car. Their DS asked if his car wasn’t running, and when SIL said it was, the grandson said “why spend all that money to change it if it still works?”.

Makes my heart warm just thinking about it. I have high hopes for him ...:)

I remember an old friend's definition of the state lottery - "A tax on people who didn't study their math."

Instructor never showed! And a couple of people had taken the whole day off from work. Apparently this has never happened before. Think I'll call AARP and try to get another class for free.

Today I am going to what I hope is my last post-operative appointment with the surgeon who did my total knee replacement last August 13th. It's been about 15 weeks by now, and I am very happy with the results. Well, except that I still need to build up my leg strength so that I can walk farther, but two weeks ago we resumed going to the gym regularly and I know that leg strength will develop eventually. I have no problems walking without a walker or cane, climbing stairs, standing for reasonably long periods of time, sleeping in any position I want, and so on. I think it's a total success.

F is going with me to the surgeon. Before now I felt like I needed him at these appointments to help me understand and absorb what the surgeon was saying, since I get "deer in the headlights" syndrome sometimes at important doctor appointments; but now I don't feel I need him for that any more. I mean really, the surgeon can't take back my knee at this point. :ROFLMAO: But F wants to come along anyway so that's fine with me. We plan to go out to lunch on the way home from my appointment.

Glad you're not going to give up. I just did it last week. There's something in it for everyone. Most of the people in mine were 70's and 80's, and one had fallen asleep at the wheel from not taking his diabetes medicine correctly. I think he was mandated. There is a lot of material about medication and recognizing diminished capacity in yourself.

I went because I have encountered several situations since coming to FL where I didn't know what to do - for instance a blinking yellow left turn signal (spoiler alert - don't turn unless you want to be road kill), and a 2 lane road with an off ramp feeding into the lefthand lane that has a traffic light and a right-hand lane for thru traffic. The light faces both lanes so I stopped. You can't imagine the beeping that ensued. I wanted to make sure there were no more of those surprises. Luckily there aren't, although the 2 that gave me problems were included. It gave me confidence that at least I have the same roadway info as everybody else. Already beep-educated.

There was also a section on adjusting your mirrors for optimal scanning and how to keep constantly scanning them while you are driving.

I'm keeping the book. My instructor pretty much just read the book to us, but you also gain from others' experiences. The others in the class were mostly Florida natives who still drive without a lot of agita. Gave me some confidence.

Also you get something off of your auto insurance. I got $35 from Geico.

I hopefully have made my last pre Thanksgiving grocery run. It is only six of us but two have to eat gluten free. Which has made it interesting .

Day 7 after my hip replacement surgery:

Looks like I was "too ambitious" yesterday with my 1/3 mile walk. My hip area muscles are on fire. So I didn't go to the ROMEO meeting this morning and I am packed under ice for the day.

You know what they say about the older you get.....you are really not as smart as you thought you were.

Rest and ice today.

He sounds like a keeper. :D

We went to see the new Mr. Rogers movie, starring Tom Hanks. I was struck by how much we could all benefit by listening to his message in these troubling times.

A few hours of navel gazing.

Yup, I'm loving this retirement gig.

Got up, ate breakfast, went to read a book and fell asleep for a couple of hours. Woke up, ate lunch, and fell asleep again with the book in my hands. Woke up for a while, read some more, fell asleep again.

It isn't the book. That's "Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers" by Brian Kilmeade so it's actually interesting even though I've never been to Texas. BIL loaned me the book, said it's a good read.

I just delivered the 4th rollator walker to our hospice. Since I have stopped flying, I have a lot more freed up cash to do things like this.

As an example, the shortest Angel Flight I was doing cost me $280. I can buy 4 of these walkers for less than the cost of that one flight.
Apparently a lot of people are getting away from the Zimmer (UK word) frames with tennis balls to the 4 wheel rollators that have a seat and storage..

I went to see the Helen Mirren/Ian McKellan movie "The Good Liar."

It was one of the best movies (if not the best one) I've seen in years.

I knew nothing of the book or the story before seeing the movie, which increased my enjoyment of it. It was very well done.

My appointment went well! The surgeon took x-rays and said everything looks fine. He told me to come back for another appointment next August, the one year anniversary of my surgery. I think that means that I am essentially done until the time if/when I want to schedule surgery on the other knee.

After that, Frank and I went out to lunch together.
