Had the exercise class at the hospital this morning. All 25 of the participants were Monday's hip and knee replacement patients. Class was informative and took an hour.

On a strange note, all the knee replacement patients were all woman! There was one woman with a new hip and the rest were men.

I left the hospital at 4 PM and I am now in my recliner where I will spend the night. :)

Yay for being home!!! So glad to read that you are safely home in your recliner. Hope you get some sleep tonight. :)

That's interesting about the gender differences between hip and knee patients.

I don't know much about hearing loss, but some people I know cannot be helped with hearing aids at all. It is sad, because they eventually are cut off from conversations, when it gets too hard to communicate with family members. They no longer can participate in any discussion, and become isolated.

Yes, 3 hours the last two nights each was not nearly enough sleep. The pain pills are knocking me out too. I started taking them early this morning after the pain block wore off. What really hurts is my leg muscles where they yanked them around to place the new hip ball.

My leg muscles hurt a bunch after my knee replacement surgery too, so maybe they had to do some yanking of them also. I really felt like I had been through a lot! :) But that pain went away after several days in my recliner. The pain pills are great for sleeping, I agree!

The movers brought over the rest of my girlfriend's stuff yesterday. This coincides with the completion (mostly) of a major reno. We're both now purging and sorting through duplicate items....although I'm leaving most of that to her while I complete the last of the trim work.

Last night I spent in the recliner waking up every 2 hours to hit the bathroom with my walker in the dark (dangerous). UGH. That was a royal pain, but now I am prepared with an empty Gatorade bottle (easy for a guy, LOL).

Today my daughter is coming by to help (DW is not up to it) as I need the ice machine loaded and set up. Once the muscle pain subsides, I can start taking walks up and down the street. The 4" incision was glued shut so showering will be easy.

In ten day, I have an appointment with the surgeon to release me for driving. I hope I am up to it.

This is not something I’ll do today, but I did get the happy news today that I’m asked to accompany to a show in January by one of my all-time faves: Ms. Emmylou Harris!

The show’s scheduled at UNC-Greensboro, which happens to be Emmylou’s alma mater. [emoji4]

[ADDED] If you’re a Prime member you can find the album “Old Yellow Moon” with Rodney Crowell along with a bunch of other Emmylou classics.

maybe your daughter could bring some motion detector night lights? We have some and they work wonders for those middle of the night bathroom visits, without having to turn on lights to wake others!

Thanks for the tip. I check into that idea. I suppose I can strap a small flashlight onto the walker too!

AM: Had a hearing test at Sam's Club while I was having a set of tires installed. Due to "profound" high frequency hearing loss, a pair of $4,000+ hearing aids were recommended and I gave them a short test drive. Said I would think about it.

PM: Joined Costco and made an appointment for a hearing test (yes, I know a membership isn't required for the test). Finished mowing the lawn for what I hope is the last time this year.
Let us know how they work if you get the Costco hearing aids. I got them (about $800/pair) about 3 years ago. They don't help much so I don't wear them much. To me they are tinney sounding and one sounds like an over driven speaker. I also have major high frequency hearing loss. If you have good results I may try a new pair.

Great idea! And yes you guys are lucky about that. LOL

The dark was not a problem for me because first of all I have no problems sleeping with a light on (and did), plus even if the power went out (it didn't) I have 7 battery operated motion detecting nightlights between my recliner and the bathroom.

But I am a light sleeper, and in the nights soon after the surgery the pain of walking clear to the bathroom and back awakened me so much that I couldn't get back to sleep. So, I used a portable commode for those early days when that was a problem. In fact the hospital *gave* me one for free (maybe Medicare or BCBS paid for it? I don't know). So I guess that is a frequent problem for joint replacement patients.

After pickleball this morning we stopped at Lowe’s and Home Depot to look at washing machines and load up on plumbing supplies. We also started accepting the fact that we are going to be spending some money.

We are planning to do a gut job on the master bath, but it looks like some other spending will happen first. Last Thursday morning I noticed that there was wetness on our hardwood floor in the breakfast room. The water was coming from the adjacent laundry room. To make a long story short, we now know we need to repair/replace drywall, replace the hardwood floor, and replace the clothes washer. We haven’t heard from the insurance adjuster yet but we are prepared to be paying more than our deductible out of pocket.

This all happened as DH has been working on installing a new water softener. We’ve been without one since before the DD’s wedding, when the old one got stuck in “regeneration” mode and cost us $90 extra in the water bill while we were away.

And tonight, as we are watching TV news, the television picture keeps going black for about twenty seconds at a time.

Things are falling apart all at the same time!

Golfed with 2 friends on a private course that our winter condo looks out on. This is our 4th season here and the first time I played it. Had a good day... -4 net, no blow up holes and nothing worse than a double and 1 birdie. Also, I parred the par 5 that our condo looks out on and birdied a par 3 with a green near the condo.

Then a nice lunch in the clubhouse and an afternoon nap.

Last night I got up from the recliner at 4 AM to make a bathroom stop. I decided I had enough of the recliner and went in the bedroom to try to get in bed for the rest of the night. DW helped me swing in on my back and I slept there for 4 more hours. Boy, did that feel good. :)

I think the leg muscle swelling is receding and I could walk with less effort today. I'm still going to use the ice machine for the rest of the morning then try to get some walking in. I might even try to take a shower as I can't even stand myself right now (LOL). I did shave this morning!

DD is coming over this morning to help out. I really like the ice cooler (Ossur Cold Rush Therapy Cooler) as it is effortless and really helps. Here's a link to this great machine:

It's a bit expensive, but worth every cent.

A nap is a serious luxury. After reading this I checked for prior threads and found a “Do You Nap?” one from a while ago. I don’t know if it’s active.

The sleep tracking feature from smart watches/wearables (I have a Fitbit) helps decide if you could use a nap based on last night’s sleep. Reliable for me and almost always improves the rest of the day.

That's it, I am taking a Nap Tooooooooo! :D

You are doing WONDERFULLY! I think it took me 6 weeks before I moved from my recliner to my bed. But then, I didn't have anybody to help me get into my bed in the middle of the night (since I do live alone) or I might have done that earlier.

So glad that walking is easier for you today. Things will be getting better for you from now on.

I have the exact same ice machine and it is wonderful. I like the fact that it is insulated, so the ice and water stays cold longer. I usually just put three frozen water bottles in it because they are easier to carry than ice.

W2R, as we know, hips are much easier than knees to recover from. All that is hurting are the leg muscles that were twisted and disturbed during the hip implant install. The incision is only 4" long and it's in front,so that's not a problem.

Swinging into bed is improved by sitting on a new polyethylene trash bag (slippery). But you do need another person, which I have.

I use the frozen water bottle trick too!:)

Sat in the dentist's chair this morning. He drilled out an old filling and then gave me a choice. Put in a new filling, leaving the roots intact. But they didn't look so good on the x-ray so that was taking a chance they would cause problems down the road. SOOOO...it was a new filling now and take a risk of encountering a problem in a few months, to many years, to never having a problem with just a filling. Or do the full root canal now and not worry about the future. After some discussion, he and I both leaned towards the root canal today. I DO NOT want to be on vacation with problems. I don't want a problem some Friday night when I can't get in to see him 2 or 3 days later. I don't want to think about traveling and not being able to find a dentist.

So maybe this post should go in Blow that Dough section. I went with the root canal (he had time to do it right then) and I handed over my credit card as I left the office!!
Not a cheap experience.

Upside....he saw a little inflammation under the tooth and gave me an antibiotic prescription just in case it got worse after digging around it this morning. I've been dealing with some annoying cough/bronchial thing.....so maybe the antibiotic will help with that too....and not have to go back to a medical doctor.

Had a long day yesterday. Drove to and through parts of Baltimore, MD:hide: for a follow-up with a specialist who says I'm doing fine. Then on the way home stopped in Frederick for a gluten-free pizza at Ouno's. They only make the "personal size" but to my surprise I ate the whole thing, it's much better than what's available locally. That I have to drive for an hour to get one is probably a good thing.

Then today was a gym workout, followed by an appointment at a neurosurgeon's office to find out some treatment options for my back pain. The good news is that he immediately ruled out any kind of surgery for what ails me. That's good news now, but hmm, that does limit future options. Anyway, we'll try physical therapy first and I'm all for that and hopefully that'll be all I'll need. It's in the same building as the gym I go to so logistics will be simplified.

Worked out, went for a run, took my old Apple Airport Extreme and put it in the garage as a Wifi extender and ran ethernet from extender to my new basement WifI gateway. Having some issues with iPads and iPhones losing Wifi.

Watched TV, with one eye open, most of the day. I'm really not feeling the very well after this eye surgery. My eye feels like someone took a baseball bat to it and I'm not seeing very well at all. They suggested that altitude isn't great for my recovery so I drove down hill and dropped down to 6500'. Spent an hour down there and drove back in the dark with one eye closed. Stopped a couple times on the way home and I'm feeling a little better now.

Started getting frustrated with having to position myself laying on my left side all day and night. I'm not used to staying off my back for this long. DW took the other side of the bed so I can't roll backwards. Hopefully next week I can sleep normally. I'd be great if I could see more than blur.

I removed, wire brushed and Parkerized the rusting old cast iron hardware (hinges and doorknob escutcheons) on my bathroom door and then reinstalled it. It looks good. I had removed 162 years' worth of paint from the hardware when I refinished the door earlier this year and it started rusting.
