What new series are you watching? *No Spoilers, Please*

What not to watch

I just have to say something about this----DW and I watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer last evening. It is a 2017 film on Netflix starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan. We started to turn it off several times but it was so bizarre that we elected to watch to the end hoping that at some point it would reveal itself to be something other that a unbelievably bad movie with characters that all sounded like robots, no emotion, and almost like an episode of the Twilight Zone.

Then out of curiosity I googled it and found that it was critically acclaimed and nominated for lots of awards.

If that is a critically acclaimed movie then I've lost touch with reality. So weird!

Miss Scarlet & the Duke, for those who like the UK (Irish) Period Drama Crime Series. The first 4 episodes dropped today. There are only 6, 5 and six should be available by early May.

We also watched last night - like you we just don't get it. DW said 'we just wasted 2hrs'

Anyone watching "Dispatches From Elsewhere" on AMC?

I am only half way through, but it is really well written. It has a Lodge 49 vibe.

'Critically acclaimed' is reviewerspeak for "I haven't got a clue what this is about, therefore it must be 'arty'; and not wanting to appear gauche before those who seem to me to be able to interpret it, I shall recommend it highly and therefore be perceived by the hoi polloi as one of the aesthetics having exquisite taste".

you're fine. many (most?) hollywood types lost touch with the folks who buy the tickets or tune in the pgms a long time ago.

Watched Unorthodox on Netflix last night, quick 4 episodes.... about a Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn flees to Berlin from an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians — until her past comes calling.... was a good insight into a religion which we were basically clueless about....

We enjoyed that also - very enlightening and based on a autobiography. Fundamentalism in most religions seems to be perpetuated by a very closed system of community. I had seem people with the braids before but had no idea about their beliefs.

I just finished Better Call Saul and enjoyed it.

Back in the '70s after her divorce my Mom dated a guy who was a dead-ringer for Bob Odenkirk's character Jimmy McGill. Physical appearance, personality, profession, ethical sense, situation in life, etc. are a perfect match. Just looking at the guy makes me laugh - my teenage years in all of their glory and ugliness come back with a vengeance. And - in an example of life imitating art - my Mom's old BF now lives in the American Southwest (he's up near 80 years old now). Call me a fan of BCS!

So you're the other one! I am, but I have to watch it late at night after DW has gone to bed. She's not a fan. I really like it. I'll have to check out Lodge 49. Never heard of it.

What channel? My google search only turned up PBS at some point in 2020 and a search of PBS shows it as "future in 2020"?

I guess we are the other ones. We have watched nine episodes and, I hope, there is only one left -- Episode 10 - April 27th. This is one of those shows that is interesting enough to watch but when the episode ends, one has this nagging feeling that there is a better use of ones time. Therefore, we will keep watching until it goes away and count ourselves lucky to have escaped.

FWIW, we didn't "binge" it but watched an episode a week. In retrospect, that was the wisest choice. <chuckle>

Watched the first episode of Baptiste on PBS last night. It's a story following a detective who comes out of retirement to try to find a girl who has gone missing from the red light district in Amsterdam.

So good! PBS is really knocking it out of the park lately, between this show and World on Fire. We are super impressed.

The character comes from a series called Missing, which had the first two seasons on Starz.

You don't have to watch those seasons to know about Baptiste the character but it shows how tenacious he is.

We still have Comcast cable TV with its dvr capability--will look at PlayOn if we ever cut the cord. Thanks for mentioning it!

(Another of my PlayOn plugs)

For when you do cut-the-cord, you should bookmark this article: How to record all the free streaming TV before it's gone

To help people pass the time at home during the coronavirus pandemic, several TV networks have been streaming movies and shows for free. HBO, for instance, has opened up nearly 500 hours of free programming to non-subscribers, while CBS All Access has offered 60-day trials even to previous customers. Epix is also offering a 30-day trial through Amazon Prime, and several more services are providing extended trials through the Roku Channel.

These aren’t simple acts of generosity. Eventually, the free trials will run dry and the giveaways will go away, at which point you’ll be expected to pay for all those shows you’re in the middle of watching.

Fortunately, there’s a workaround:

Also FYI:

If you’re wondering whether any of this is legal, PlayOn has always likened itself to any VCR or DVR that copies videos for personal use. The user’s name and IP address appear at the start of each recording to discourage sharing, and while some streaming providers might point out that their terms of service don’t allow recording, running afoul of those terms isn’t the same as breaking the law. The fact that PlayOn has been around for more than a decade is a strong indication that the service is legally in the clear.

Discovered the new series called 'Run'. I think it's great. Likable characters.

Not a show but a whole new Network. https://www.circleplus.com/

It is available on several Subscription providers (Sling, Youtube, etc), Facebook and, if you are lucky (as we are), a local OTA station. They offer everything Country from Live "Grand Ol Opry" (current sans audience) to classics like "Hee Haw" and obscure movies starring C&W stars -- "Another Pair of Aces: Three of a Kind' with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, for instance.
