Hopefully he won't say your name out loud during the announcement :LOL::LOL::LOL:

Yeah, I was hoping they would leave it open but just for exercise like Florida did. But it just wasn’t meant to be. At least now maybe I’ll have a little peace and quiet in the neighborhood...until the next protest...on Friday.

To answer two people who responded to my above post:

1) just not ready to retire right now due to keeping to a plan. Still on for Dec. 2020.

2) currently employer is very generous with a matching plan for retirement savings; this is most likely being cut

COVID‐19 Coagulopathy in Caucasian patients

Although the pathophysiology underlying severe COVID‐19 remains poorly understood, accumulating data suggest that a lung‐centric coagulopathy may play an important role. Elevated D‐dimer levels which correlated inversely with overall survival were recently reported in Chinese cohort studies. Critically however, ethnicity has major effects on thrombotic risk, with a 3‐4 fold lower risk in Chinese compared to Caucasians and a significantly higher risk in African‐Americans. In this study, we investigated COVID‐19 coagulopathy in Caucasian patients. Our findings confirm that severe COVID‐19 infection is associated with a significant coagulopathy that correlates with disease severity. Importantly however, Caucasian COVID‐19 patients on LMWH thrombo‐prophylaxis rarely develop overt DIC. In rare COVID‐19 cases where DIC does develop, it tends to be restricted to late stage disease. Collectively, these data suggest that the diffuse bilateral pulmonary inflammation observed in COVID‐19 is associated with a novel pulmonary‐specific vasculopathy which we have termed pulmonary intravascular coagulopathy (PIC) as distinct to DIC. Given that thrombotic risk is significantly impacted by race, coupled with the accumulating evidence that coagulopathy is important in COVID‐19 pathogenesis, our findings raise the intriguing possibility that pulmonary vasculopathy may contribute to the unexplained differences that are beginning to emerge highlighting racial susceptibility to COVID‐19 mortality.

- DIC: Disseminated intravascular coagulation....i.e. Blood clots.

- Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is a class of anticoagulant medications. They are used in the prevention of blood clots and treatment of venous thromboembolism

Fascinating, Nemo! It's intriguing to see how they unravel the mechanisms behind all this.

My COVID-19 news of the day is that tomorrow, Texas will be lifting 14-day quarantine requirements on Louisiana travelers to their state. At last! We are no longer the lepers of the South, so to speak. Our coronavirus situation is much improved compared with how it was a month ago, and meanwhile other states have gotten much worse. Maybe Florida has or will lift their quarantine restrictions for visitors from Louisiana, as well.

Our healthcare policy posted a long-detailed list of everything they will cover re:Covid. Looks like emergency care applies to the deductible, some coverage (treatment, extended treatment) is fuzzy. All tests, antibody included are covered. DH had a test yesterday, came back negative in less than 24 hours. But I'm aware of false negatives.

A friend of my brother's-I posted this elsewhere also- tested negative twice, but positive for antibodies. He was tested during and after symptoms. Our area had a significant spike in the last 2 days.

If you need somebody to not clean your pool, or to not detail your car, then I think I can work you into the schedule for not doing it next Wednesday, between 10am and 2pm. Just let me what time does not work for you, and I'll send you a bill...

LOL

Okay, that seals the deal. "Honey, I'm going out to get a 12-pack of Charmin".:LOL:

What are you going to tell her why it took 3 hours to get the TP and you came back with 1 roll?

Worse yet the ear to ear grin is hard to explain.

A dog here in Chapel Hill was diagnosed with Covid-19 recently. Duke University was doing a study and tested a whole family and their pets. 3 members of the family tested positive, I think asymptomatic. The dog had been sick with cold like symptoms and also tested positive. On the local news tonight now they are saying if you have Covid-19 or symptoms you should quarantine away from your pet and pets should stay 6 feet apart from other pets and owners.

Rumor has it that our Governor will be shutting down all beaches statewide in California effective Friday.

https://www.foxla.com/news/source-gov-newsom-to-announce-closure-of-all-beaches-and-state-parks
The governor left most beaches open.... Except Orange county... The pictures of Newport Beach and Hermosa Beach led him to close beaches there. He name checked San Diego for handling the beach opening well.... Thank goodness.

I did my morning beach walk for the second time since the shutdown... (The other time was on Monday) Still a bit too crowded for me, but I'll try even earlier tomorrow. I was spoiled by daily beach walks in the early am prior to the covid shutdowns and an looking forward to the beaches returning to having just a few people walking and the surfers at sunrise.

Our Council Members held a meeting tonight and voted 5-2 to mount a legal challenge against Governor Newsom asserting he overstepped his authority in ordering only Orange County beaches closed.

They are a pretty arrogant bunch. They could have easily put some controls in place to reduce the crowd sizes but they ignored the problem. And now they want to blame our Governor rather than fixing the mess they created.

After Georgia was excoriated for opening business's Colorado does the same and not a peep.
Yeah, I don't get that. Through today (April 30), Colorado has had 140 COVID-19 deaths per million population, while Georgia has had 110. Pretty surprising given Georgia has 80% more people than Colorado, but 45% less overall land size.

This morning I found that Portugal moved from a State of Emergency to a State of Calamity. The reopening plan:

Local businesses open their doors on May 4.

In this first phase, it will be allowed the reopening of some stores that were forced to close with the state of emergency, decreed for the first time on March 19 by the President of Portugal.
- Small businesses, namely stores up to 200 square meters;
- Hairdressers and beauticians, as well as barbershops;
- Bookstores;
- Individual sporting activities are allowed, although without the use of changing rooms;
- Universities may return, but are not obliged. Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra can continue to have distance learning and resume only practical classes.

From May 18 to 31. Reopening restaurants and football is back

The government had already said that after taking the first steps in reopening the economy, it would monitor the effects on public health every 15 days. Thus, and if the contagions by Covid-19 do not register a significant leap, two weeks later, on May 18, we could see more businesses to open doors, including restaurants, as well as the return of classes for the older ones.

This is what can open in the second phase:
- Commercial spaces of up to 400 square metres, although municipal councils will have a special prerogative that will give them the power to allow stores with larger areas to open.
- Cafes, pastries and restaurants, but with conditions. The reopening of these establishments will take place with half the capacity, in order to ensure social distancing within the space, according to Radio Renascença.
- Some cultural spaces and museums.
- The classes are back for students of the 11th and 12th grades.
- Day care centers, although the government keeps the state aid for parents who stay at home with their children. This state aid will be in place until the end of May.
- Football will be able to return without spectators in the stadiums. The Liga Nos can resume games on the weekend of May 30 and 31.

Finally, as the pandemic develops in a controlled way, there will be the opening of more commercial spaces, namely the large stores, where many people gather.

Thus, in the third and final phase of this reopening on June 1:
- Commercial spaces of over 400 square meters, including shopping malls;
- After kindergartens, the preschool will also reopen.
- The polytechnic institutes may be left for the end and with restrictions.
- Football will be able to return without spectators in the stadiums.
- The start of the bathing season should bring limitations on access to beaches.

DS was called back to work at his restaurant in CO yesterday and is working today as well. They have not re-opened, but are cleaning up, clearing inventory, etc. The owner got their loan in the second round and need to boost payroll. They think they can re-open Monday.

It is a good set-up for the new reality. It is a walk-up, counter-order restaurant with limited seating anyway. It is also a popular take-out location for the locals in a tourist town.

DS will happily give up state unemployment to go back to work. He knows his mindset is better when busy.

Today is the first day of the beginning of the re-opening of Ohio. Today is also the first day that we're under a new Stay Safe Ohio Order that extends through May 28th. I watched yesterday's Ohio press conference after the fact. I fast forwarded through most of the first 42 minutes when DeWine appears to talk mostly about his ties, plants, and the prisons. During the Q&A, a reporter asked if we were going to be under a new Stay At Home Order since the then-current one was expiring at midnight. DeWine said that we were going to be under a new order, but said nothing really much about it. Maybe they should talk about that in some detail today. :rolleyes:

Here's a link to the order, if anyone is interested:

https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/publicorders/Directors-Stay-Safe-Ohio-Order.pdf

It details the timeline and conditions of the re-opening plan. Besides that, the previous restrictions on our movement are basically the same, except that now more places will be open over time for people to work at and to patronize as customers. They include some specific medical conditions in the section where it says that those over 65 are supposed to take additional precautions.

My prediction.... The lawsuit will be dropped after your council agrees to put in safety controls to avoid crowding at the beach in exchange for the governor reopening your beaches. Win win. But I would imagine it will take several city councils together since there are several cities that failed in OC. (Newport and Hermosa being the interview that got the media attention)

Went for a morning walk early this morning in la jolla. Not nearly as crowded as Monday and half the crowds of yesterday. Almost to typical pre-covid people density for dawn.

OC is in a tough position with the beaches. Almost the same population as San Diego County, but a lot less coastline and a lot more of it belongs to the state, which is keeping their beaches closed. OC really needs to wait until the state beaches reopen in order to avoid funneling everyone into a few small areas. I think L.A. county beaches are still closed too, so you probably had a lot of people from Long Beach and points north heading over your way last weekend. I guess we'll see if all the OC people head south to Oceanside this coming weekend. Hopefully that's too long of a trek for most of them.

My theory about vaccines is proving likely. I opined the fact that our children receive a lot of vaccines may be protective. It appears that live virus vaccines such as polio (which is no longer in use in the US) and tuberculosis vaccine (which we don't use because our incidence is very low) may activate innate antibodies. Both of those vaccines are administered orally and are cheap. These vaccines wouldn't provide long term specific protection but they would buy us time until a targeted vaccine is available.
