What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

Wake up one morning, and you're in a Rowan & Martin segment:

In recognition of a recent RIP thread, we could say that Leon Spinks was a practitioner of The Sweet Science. And he just wore shorts, no shirt.

In all my past 53 years of experiences, am 73, just discounting stuff before age 20, only people in the chemical and biochemistry fields self identified as scientist. Most were lab techs or students working on their degrees. Only one of the bunch had MS.

Never found any others in a wide range of hard sciences who self identified as scientist. Media folks seem to call scientists those people engaged in and having expertise in furthering knowldge.

Given the way politicians are throwing the word 'science' around to justify whatever they want to do, it may soon be a source of problems to call oneself a 'scientist'.

Here's a true "pet" peeve:

I wish people would stop re-posting lost puppy and lost kitty notices on FB. I live in MO and no, I haven't seen your furbaby that ran away from your home in SC!

Today's pet peeve!

Calling the IRS, being on "hold" for two hours and finding out the letter you sent them in early 2020 on the tax return THEY LOST three years ago has not been opened or read by them YET.

Nevertheless, the quarterly automatic penalty letters spewed out by their computer keep on coming!

(apparently, the Ogden IRS office has MILLIONS of unopened letters from companies and individual taxpayers that sent them in during 2019 and 2020.)

I found a trick to hide those.

If they are being reposted from a page such as "SC Animal Shelter" you can click on the "..." at the top right of the post, and select "Hide All from SC Animal Shelter" and you won't see those types of posts again that originated from SC Animal Shelter.

Apple laptop power cables. One of the above chemical scientists must have formulated some sort a compound that self destructs after a couple of years. Never had an issue with Dell or IBM of HP charger cables back in the day. I have four charging cables with varying lengths of electrical tape wrap.

Around here, there is a number of posts about hawks and even eagles along with coyotes that are seen taking game (squirrels and rabbits . . .) and some even discuss how a small dog or cat has been taken for food.

Then there's the posts about lost furbabies and no one seems to want to say the obvious. Sad as it may be, furbaby ain't coming home.

I think those posts are everywhere. When we lived in the burbs of ATL, we saw the coyote posts often. People wanted animal control to take care of it. Now, we are out in the country and we see THE SAME posts. I guess it's the nature of the beast.

Being on hold with Vanguard for the last 1:11:14!
I hope I don't need to update in the morning.

We've had a family of coyotes in the back yard since last summer. Decreased human activity has likely made them more comfortable being right in the city. Sadly for the last two weeks things have quieted down dramatically. I am hoping that the pups have either matured, they have moved on or both but DW fears that animal control may have relocated them.

At the cottage we have a couple of beautiful foxes that make the rounds each day. One of my DDs saw a great set of wolf prints at the cottage a few weeks ago. That makes me a bit more nervous.

A death announcement with no cause of death. Recently a young Jeopardy champ unexpectedly died at age 25. If you think your person is so important that they need a national (on the news) death announcement then please give us the 5 W's. If no then don't announce his/her death at all. In other news something happened somewhere today or was it yesterday?

My pet peeve is Latinx people on the radio (and some others ) who pronounce certain Spanish words with a Spanish accent, sometimes but not always. Although as someone who's studied linguistics I'm curious about the linguistic 'rules' behind the phenomenon. And why is it only Spanish? And why only certain words, or in certain contexts? Seems to be a political/cultural statement, but the seeming randomness of it bugs me.

^ Ja, warum ist das?

Wait. You use the made-up North American term Latinx, and then question "political/cultural statements"?:facepalm::facepalm:

DD and SIL use a clothespin to clip outgoing mail on the inside of their mailbox; did it for years. Then new mailman enters the scene, takes the clothespin, leaves the mail. DD and SIL complain at post office. SIL wires clothes pin to mailbox, still clipping mail inside mailbox. Mailman still steals clothespin, but with more concerted effort, still leaves outgoing mail. DD and SIL complain again to Post Office Management. A couple of Saturdays ago, SIL confronts mailman and asks why he's not doing his job of delivering and taking outgoing mail. Mailman says he can't, not the way he was trained. Frustrated SIL tells him to just do his f-ing job. Now, the mailman doesn't even deliver the mail, he feels threatened! Now, DD and SIL have to go to Post Office to pick up mail, where they complain about lack of mail service every time. PS, their neighbors don't get their outgoing mail picked up either. WTH:confused:

My trick is I deleted Facebook. Problem solved.

I'm enjoying the extra animal activity outside my window. Mostly. Not so much the deer that ate every green shoot in my back yard. Oh, there I go with a deer sighting! Forgive me.

I suppose this would annoy me too, but to put it in context, postal services in most other countries don’t pick up outgoing mail. This was a very surprising service to me when I moved here (many, many years ago). That said, it is what one has come to expect - not sure it is an official service offered by the postal service though, or just something they have been doing out of kindness. It probably does add some extra work (and maybe liability), so as they get squeezed more and more, they may be looking to cut services.
Personally, I have never trusted the system enough to leave important mail pieces in the mailbox. Especially when you set the flag, it sort of advertises potential loot to anyone out to steal your stuff. Used to be a bigger issue back when I routinely mailed checks for payments. I always mailed those by dropping them off at work or in a blue box.

Just curious; why? Never heard of anyone doing that.

I guess it' just what us "yinzers" do around here, albeit I'm speaking of mailboxes that are attached to the house next to the door. It's not the rural style mailbox that is out by road. You place the outgoing mail upright in your mailbox, clip it to the side so it doesn't blow away, and close the lid. The lid will not close all the way. The carrier then puts the mail in the mailbox after you open the lid, and pull the mail away from the clothespin. My 85 yo mom does it, my 89yo MIL did it when she lived in WV and when we brought her up here. I would do the same thing, but I have the rural style mailbox.

The mailboxes at my rentals have a separate slot in front for outgoing that has a small door/flap that keeps it in place. There is an top door/lid that you lift up and put incoming mail.

I see the same thing, some tourists lost a cute little dog last spring and they are still offering a large reward for any information. That dog was a snack for a fox/coyote/mountain lion/bear/eagle months ago. I'm sorry for their loss, it's terribly sad to see them hoping their pet will somehow be found.

I don't know if our postal carriers still pick up outgoing mail, but our security mailbox has a clip inside the door to hold outgoing mail, and a flag to let the carrier know mail is waiting.

That said, I wouldn't dream of putting mail out in the box these days. As another poster mentioned, the flag is just a notification to thieves that mail is waiting for them to look through.

I've had enough mail stolen over the years (incoming and outgoing) that I always take outgoing mail down to the nearest postal box. They even pried our security mail box open one time to see what was inside (nothing of value).

We're in a rural area and can't see our mailbox from the house. So, I use electronic documents and direct deposits whenever possible. The only mail we really get anymore is junk mail. Thieves are welcome to take it. :)

By the way, you can schedule a package pickup with USPS. Unfortunately, it can't be used with regular first class mail.

https://usps.force.com/faq/s/article/What-is-Package-Pickup

"Package Pickup is a free (regardless of the number of items scheduled for pickup), next delivery day (or designated delivery day) service. Priority Mail Express® items, Priority Mail® items, First-Class Package Service-Commercial™ items, and international or returns items are eligible for free Package Pickup."
