True Detective - Night Country final episode is this evening on Max & HBO.

Final episode tonight, but I read there's a finale on Feb. 25.

"The finale of True Detective: Night Country on February 25, 2024, is expected to be one of the most explosive and dark endings of the entire anthology. With just two episodes left, True Detective: Night Country is set to deliver a thrilling season that recaptures the magic of the franchise's early success."

I’m watching it and will finish it at this point. But imo hasn’t been very good so far. Very slow moving and uninteresting. Hopefully it explodes with storyline in these last couple episodes

That info is incorrect. The final is episode 6, which is tonight.

It's been a great season. I'm going through watching the earlier episodes a second time, and I'm actually enjoying that more than the first time through. That's something I don't normally do with a series.

Tonight's episode 6 is the last / finale of the season.

I'm loving True Detective, this will definitely be a series I rewatch if there's a slow patch later this year.

Also watching the glorious trash that is Love is Blind new season on netflix.

I watched season 4 of True Detective. Put me in the "did not like" camp. I thought the story telling was awful.
Re-watched season 1 and think it was far superior. To each their own!

I started watching season 4 of For All Mankind last night. I might have been too tired to watch as it did not grab me. Might watch an episode tonight. We shall see. I really like this shows previous seasons so I am hopeful.

To be fair, I never saw the first three. But what's also interesting, is the director of this one brought the project to HBO as an independent story, but HBO/max decided to brand it as a new TD and added some features (mainly easter eggs) to tie some loose links.

I think it would have done better in the public discourse had it not been shoe-horned into a franchise that had pre-existing expectations. With Jodie Foster starring, it didn't need that much push to get eyeballs.

My son told me about the director and the supposed tie ins. IMHO they did not make their goal. I mean season 1 was in 2014!

I agree on true detective season 4. The story telling was awful. Way too slow. And frankly the characters weren’t that deep or compelling either. Good acting lost to a bad script and story.

I liked True Detective season 4, and there was a lot to keep up on, so I even rewatched the first 5 episodes, although I thought the finale ending was a little ridiculous. I rewatched the finale also, although I didn't like it as much the second time, the opposite of the previous episodes.

Shogun: a new series!

FX has announced a new production of Shogun, a 10 episode series. The first 2 episodes are released on Feb 27, the remaining 8 are released one per week. It will show on FX and Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK. I can’t wait. One of my favorite books, and initial reviews are very positive.

FX has announced a new production of Shogun...

I am stoked as well!. The WSJ had an article on it sort of featuring Hiroyuki Sanada and his influence on the authenticity of the production. It sounds really good to me. I spent 20 years of intense training in Aikido and can relate to judging someone on how they tie their obi. I think most don't understand how everything matters in this culture down to the smallest detail.

I remember the original Shogun series with Richard Cumberlain. It was quite good.

Oh yeah, unforgettable!
+1

It was an excellent series, and I remember (and liked) the way the show started in Japanese with no subs titles, and as the English protagonist learned Japanese the series transitioned to English.

OOPS! The original Shogun starred Richard Chamberlain. The keyboard misspelled his name.

I don't remember the lack of subtitles for Japanese but I don't doubt your word. What I do remember is some poor villager getting his head chopped off for not bowing low enough to his leader. A flash of the sword and his head popped off and dropped to the ground. Back then that was a notable special effect.

We watched Leave The World Behind with Julia Robert’s last night. DW was angry at the ending, I thought it was ultimately pointless. YMMV

Yeah, DW and I didn’t really like it either. Seemed to drag on very slowly and then the ending just felt off. However, the movie was interesting in that it gives you something to think about. A “what would you do in that situation” conversation starter.

I watched both episodes and thoroughly enjoyed them. This is clearly a big budget production with high quality cinematography.

The story line, at least through the first 2 episodes, follows the book but is not “closely coupled”. There is clearly some drift. I’m still looking forward to the next 8 episodes. I’ll wait until the last episode is available to continue watching.

Looking forward to Shogun, and Dune II.

We watched Griselda and Who Is Erin Carter? Both interesting but not in my top ten all time. Both violent, and lots of F’s in Griselda.

Haven't seen, except trailer.

Sadly, Mariko can speak English so well ... the magic is gone.

Just finished Spaceman (Netflix). 2h47m. Adam Sandler in a rare dramatic role as a lone Czech astronaut on a year+ mission to explore a cloud beyond Jupiter.

This reminded me of Intersteller and 2001: A Space Oddyesey . I didn't like 2001 when it was first released but as I have aged I have come to appreciate it. Spaceman actually put me to sleep a few times. Perhaps, one day I will come to appreciate Spaceman but as of right now I cannot recommend it.

Shogun

Great series. Watch the mini historical making of the series. Very interesting.

I've been looking forward to the release of "Masters of the Air" on Apple+. It is the third in the WWII series following the release of "Band of Brothers" in 2001 and "The Pacific" in 2010. The first seven of the nine episode series have been released with the final one due out on March 15.

I was about to pull the trigger on a one-month subscription to Apple+ this weekend when this offer popped up on Slickdeals: New or Select Returning Subscribers: 2 Months of Apple TV+ Free. Perfect timing.

I've heard mixed reviews on MOTA and after watching the first episode I'm not sure how it will hold up when compared to the first two in the series. I doubt it will come close to being as good as Band of Brothers which I consider the best WWII film ever produced.
