I thought "Young Dreamers" would be the appropriate place to put this story of someone who's been dreaming of retirement, even if she's not necessarily so young. Martha, did this make the news up your way?

An 80-year-old secretary who hit a $1.3 million jackpot at a Minnesota casino Monday night says she can now finally quit working for Senior U.S. District Judge Samuel King.
She may have a pretty hefty tax bill in her first year, and her only protection against inflation is Social Security, but I think FIRECalc would be OK with a 6% or even a 7% SWR in this situation...

... depending on how much more time she's planning to spend in Minnesota.

I wonder how often she goes to the casino. Could it be the reason she had to work until 80? Anyway, luckily for her, it worked out.

I was surprised that it was Minnesota instead of the California in Las Vegas. But yeah, I suspect the two are related.

She played the same slot machine for two days--that sounds pretty hard core.

She could have invested the $$ she spent at the slots over her years, but on the other hand, she probably didn't lose any in the markets over the past year.

I love how she says "I am going to call him and say I quit." Most jackpot winners don't seem so up front.

I'm surprised she didn't have a heart attack...
I debated whether or not to post this followup, since sadly there does seem to have been some sort of stressor:

But a statement yesterday from the judge's office said Berry has been hospitalized in Minnesota after a medical emergency. She was in stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Uh oh. I almost feel responsible now.:p

I wonder if she's having paperwork stuck under her nose by her family to sign as we speak?

Good news! Her boss (who is 93!!!! 93! What is it with people in Hawaii?) says she should be fine:

Thanks, I can't believe you guys are monitoring Hawaii's up-to-the-minute news team...

Judge King has become a local legend who's found his avocation and may never retire. A decade ago he co-authored the letter that busted the trustees of the nation's largest charitable estate trust.
