Star Trek

Just finished episode 9. Sorry to lose the engineer character. I liked this episode overall even though it was almost a total ripoff of Aliens. The captain still drives me crazy. It’s not just the hair. It’s his cavalier flippant style of command.

Time out! Sam is Jim's brother. And the mustache comes from an episode where Shatner played his brother, the only difference being the 'stache and some bad facial makeup.

Yes, "porn stache" does come to mind, especially of people a certain age...." :)

Oh my. Now that you’ve corrected me I do remember. But had forgotten and instead had it my head Sam was supposed to be his father. Actually makes me feel a bit better. Brothers definitely can be way different. But surely Jim Kirks dad wasn’t like Sam!

I’m about to watch episode 10 and perhaps mercifully be done with this season [emoji4].

Thanks for setting me straight.

I just watched the season finale of SNW and I give it a 10/10! Wow! I was grinning from ear to ear many times.

When it was over I watched TOS episode "Balance of Power."

Fantastic job by the writers to craft an alternative history timeline that fans could really dig into. Amazing.

Ok. Just finished episode 10 and I liked it. Hard not to since it was a ‘replay’ of one of my favorite TOS episodes.

The guy playing Jim Kirk did fine. But dang, at the same time he really reminded me of Jim Carrey. Was that Ace Ventura with Jim Kirks name?

Seeing this replay made me nostalgic for TOS. Need to go check out some of my favorite episodes again.

Ha ha ha ha! So I wasn't the only one who saw Jim Carrey. Especially in the scene when Kirk was sitting in the Captains chair, and to a lesser extent when in the shuttle chair.

I don't think the guy playing James T. Kirk looked anything like him and was way too thin for Kirk--surely they could have found n actor with some resemblance. On the other hand the actor playing the young Spock is spot on.

Toward the end of last night's show the new chief engineer (who you could not see) had a Scottish accent. A new Scotty?

That's it! Kirk was too thin or fine. Let's see him without a shirt and we'll know.

Any actor who is tasked with playing Kirk has an impossible job. "Captain Kirk" is an international icon. Heck, even Nena, from Germany, name checks "Captain Kirk" in the international 80s mega-hit "99 (Red)Luftballons".

I am so disappointed they killed off engineer Hemmer in Ep. 9. Did you know the actor playing him is blind in real life? I didn't. And La'an's status is unknown. I thought she was one of the good new characters.

It looks like we'll see a new Scotty next season.

Definitely. Honestly, although the actor portrayed a competent captain (unlike Pike), all I could think of was Ace Ventura when he was on screen. Weird casting choice but somehow not surprised as this was a weird season overall.

And yes, of course a young thin Scotty will be making an appearance next season it seems.

If they can’t resist bringing back characters from TOS, sure wish they’d bring back a young Yeoman Rand! That I’d be up for.

James Kirk’s father was Tiberious, a first officer who became captain for 14 glorious heroic minutes.

I enjoyed the episode 10 of Strange New Worlds, kept me guessing on which way the story was going. Amusing how they insert Pike’s love of cooking in the episodes. Interesting how the most emotionally caged character keeps being the emotional heart of the show (Spock).

).

Can you elaborate on this? I don’t recall this story. What show and episode was it referenced? I like the sound of it. Thanks

I think he is referring to the movie Star Trek, 2009, the first of the Chris Pine movies. The opening 15 minutes or so have Kirk's dad commanding a starhip that is under attack. But I don't remember Jim Kirk's father being named Tiberius.

You’re correct, my mistake. James T. Kirk’s father was briefly shown on the 2009 movie Star Trek, on a doomed starship. He suggested naming his unborn son Tiberious, after his own father. But the mom preferred James instead.

The actor who played James Kirk’s father was a young Chris Hemsworth, a fitting father to William Shatner’s Kirk.

Nice. Thanks y’all. I’ll have to rewatch that sequence.

The new movies are the Kelvin timeline. Although I enjoy those movies, they are kind of a different storyline.

I think finding someone that looked like the original Kirk might be a lot easier than finding someone that was as bad an actor. Absolutely awful. (IMO)

He’s a disaster. I know fathers and sons can be different. But to consider the great James T. Kirk originated from the loins of this porno looking goofy Sam Kirk is an insult of highest proportions. One of the many dangers of this fascination with staying in same family circles in Star Trek storylines.

Look what they did to Zefram Cochrane the inventor of Warp Drive. In the TV show he was a rather serious and dashing young man.

In the movie First Contact he was drunken idiot, a real loser of questionable moral character. He could not have invented the paper clip much less warp drive. My guess is the Borg would not have assimilated that version of Zefram Cochrane out of fear he would contaminate the entire collective.

Although a minor character in the overall Star Trek universe, it’s a great point and example of the character destruction that can be done. A whole new meaning to the term character assassination.

Rodenberry was not the saint some make him to be. If still alive, he'd probably be wrapped up in the #metoo issue. That said, he defended his characters, and their interactions, sometimes to a fault.

After he passed, we got conflict among the crew, and storylines like the drunken Chochrane.

I have been trying to think of an actor I would have liked better for the young James T Kirk role. I like Chris Pine as the young James T. Kirk in the Star Trek movies. But I wonder if he would now be too old for the part, I think he is about 40.

Good question. I’m no casting agent and this is probably a terrible choice. But what about this guy?

Last night I decided to watch the original pilot, "The Cage" from 1964. Holy cow, '64! I wanted to get a sense of Pike's command style, which, surprise, is a lot like Kirk's, and not the new Pike. They clearly spent some money on the pilot as it is gorgeously filmed. I know this and all the other TOS shows were re-mastered and touched up, but The Cage stands out. The show was clearly way ahead of it's time. There are still some 1950s feel to some scenes though.

As I watched it, I got the idea to do a little compare of characters, just for fun. I had to pull the Uhura shot from a later episode since she wasn't in the original pilot.

When going through the footage, it occurred to me that whether it was '64, '66, or '22, these actors are extremely photogenic people. Very easy on the camera. Also, Gene must have told the directors to get as much of Nichelle Nichol's legs in as many scenes as possible, because I had a hard time finding a tighter face shot.
