Ventura County is sort of in a bubble, We have a population of about 800K, we have 465 cases and 16 deaths. In my town of 30K, we have 9 cases.
BUT I will still wear mask and gloves and social distance.
Because of the heat, they have opened up our beaches, too

In my town of ~53k, no part of which is more than 3 miles from me, we have 425 cases and at least 21 deaths. It's an entirely different world around here.

We have a weird situation where the county is opening the ocean for most individual sports at sunrise on Monday morning, but they have no control over the beaches, so each city has to make its own decisions about access to the sand. We also have an active red tide right now and that keeps a lot of people out of the water anyway.

It'll be interesting to see what happens come Monday.

It was really hot today. We had more people visiting our beach today than we normally have on any day of the year outside of July 4th. I feel like our community is living in a bubble, watching the pandemic unfold all around us while somehow thinking it just doesn’t apply here.

The picture of the Jacksonville beach on the day specified in the news report is not true. That same shot was attributed to both the Jacksonville beach and one in California in two different news articles.

My neighbor’s sister lives in a condo on the Jacksonville beach in question. There were a few people on the beach but nowhere near what the picture showed.

Some states are opening too soon. Our governor said that the number of cases had to decrease for 2 weeks straight before he will consider reopening. We are looking forward to eating at a restaurant outside where there is distance between tables. Takeout isn’t the same by the time you drive home 15 minutes.

Yeah, I think it's way too soon to start returning to normal life. It will be interesting to see what happens in a couple weeks from those areas that opened anyway.

I've only done takeout once. I ordered a pizza online, picked it up, and by the time I made the 20 minute drive home it was cold. At least pizza is still decent when it's cold. Most food doesn't travel or reheat well. I'd rather cook our own meal at home. However, I do miss the experience of going out to a restaurant for a date with my wife.

I do think trails and similar outdoor recreation areas should reopen. We rarely see anyone when hiking so it has been kind of a bummer that the trails have all been closed.

Friday in my town they decided you could do outdoor seating at restaurants and hair salons, nail, etc and gyms could do one on one appointment. I also think allowed 10 people in an exercise class if they social distance. This goes a bit beyond the governor's order. He said non-essential businesses could open for curbside delivery but people couldn't go in. The town here has decided that doing individual appointment for things like hair is OK because that isn't actually opening to the public since it is by appointment.

I understand the desire to open up the businesses but I won't be going at this time. In fact, I won't be doing curbside pickup at the restaurants in this town. I will go to those in the neighboring areas that are being more cautious.

Today (Saturday) is my birthday and it is weird not to be able to go out. I love getting cards but I told DH not to get me one since I limit as much as possible how often he goes to the store (and people might have handled the cards). I told him to send me an e-card. We are going to do curbside pickup for a birthday dinner then eat at home and watch a movie rental. Not a typical birthday but OK for now.

My b'day was last week and I also told DH not to get me a card. We don't get each other presents and love the cards we find for each other. Unbeknownst to me, DH went on line and printed out 4 cards...he wrote beautiful sentiments on each one and left me to find them in the morning as I went around and 'opened up the house.' It will be a b'day I'll remember!

Happy birthday!

As long as they quarantine themselves from their older family members.

There are those who actually recommend such a plan. Let those in the 80% who are low-risk get CV19 and build up herd immunity. Then all of us, including we old folks, can get on with life with much less risk.

Since I am stuck inside either way, I don't mind it.

The Governor of Louisiana says the state will be opening up gradually, in stages, starting May 1st.

The Mayor of New Orleans says no way, New Orleans will be opening up gradually in stages too but starting May 15th.

I just found out that our Parish is going with May 1st, not May 15th! I live in an urban suburb about a half mile or mile outside the New Orleans city limits, so I am in a different Parish (=county) than New Orleans. Our Parish is even planning restaurant openings on the 1st, with fewer customers and tables further apart.

Of course, those of us in the vulnerable groups can stay home if we want to.

Still, the COVID-19 numbers are looking really good compared with our peak the first week in April (see graph below), and this despite almost 3x as many tested. I am planning to go to the grocery store in person during the first week in May, for the first time in a couple of months. I could go today since grocery shopping is permitted, but I would rather wait a little longer.

Anyway last night I ordered a simple cloth mask (not for medical use) from Etsy that should arrive by May 1st. All this is pretty exciting to me. I can't even imagine what I will encounter (or not find! ) when I go to the grocery store. I do know from what F says, that most people are wearing homemade masks at grocery stores these days.

I don't know if this qualifies as COVID news, but my mom lives in assisted living. She can't leave the facility and no visitors are allowed. So, every couple weeks I pick up a few grocery treats for her she can't get in the facility. I drive up to her facility, ring the buzzer, then someone takes my grocery bags up to mom's apartment.

I took her another goodie bag on Thursday. The staff set the bags inside her door, and mom started taking things out of the bag. Somehow she lost her balance and fell face first into the metal hinge of the entry door, banging her knee into the floor in the process. The nurse called me to let me know, but said mom was saying she was OK and didn't want to see a doctor.

Then yesterday the nurse called and said mom's forehead was swollen and bruised, she had two black eyes, bruises on her nose, and her knee was swollen too. They called an ambulance and sent her to the emergency room at the hospital. She spent the day alone there, since no visitors are allowed during COVID (I asked when the hospital called to verify insurance info). They ran a bunch of scans and everything came back OK. So they sent her back to the assisted living in a cab. The staff didn't even know she was coming until the cab dropped her off at the front door.

So, she's pretty beat up right now but sounds like she'll recover. To make matters worse, now that she left the facility she has to stay in total isolation for 14 days, she can't even go outside. Not that she'll probably feel like walking in her current condition.

Wow, bummer! I’m so glad you can talk to her. Given the vulnerability of elder group homes, I understand the extreme precautions.

Confinement can only last so long before people start to play fast and loose with the rules. We are ending week 6 of strict lockdown here in France and I can tell that people are a lot less rigorous with the confinement rules than they were at the beginning. We have 2 more weeks to go before the country starts to partially re-open. I think that the government only had one shot at this. If there is a second wave of infections, it will be nearly impossible to impose another lockdown and expect widespread compliance.

My birthday is coming up and I will spend it alone. I'm OK with that. I bought all the ingredients to make my favorite birthday cake and I'll probably have a virtual happy hour on Zoom to celebrate.

I can hope that at least this time people won’t be shocked and act like they didn’t realize the consequences when hospitalizations increase again. That may be what it takes to modify risky behavior, unfortunately.

Our dry cleaner called today and said "come get your shirts, we're going out of business".

So sorry for you and your Mom, sending prayers. My mom is in a similar situation, age 88 in an independent living apt under lock down. I live an hour and a half a way so I have been mailing her goodies--her favorite is Little Debbie cookies.

Dtail, even the casinos don’t want to open. The mayor of Vegas is stupid and her territory doesn’t include the strip, etc. She is basically a figurehead. So there’s no real conflict.

The good news from Germany is... no news! I follow Tagesschau on Erste Deutsche Fernsehen and a couple of day sago they stopped publishing numbers. Daily new cases reported had been decreasing for awhile. I know they're stepping up testing and are CAUTIOUSLY opening things up again and deciding what to monitor to make sure the infection doesn't gather strength again but I found it encouraging that the number of cases is no longer at the top of the news there.

They also noted about a week ago that, based on contact tracing they've been able to do through an app people were able to voluntarily install on their phones, the average person diagnosed with COVID-19 spread it to 1.2 people. Early on it was 3 to 4 people.

My news is from yesterday: the governor (NC) announced that public schools will not reopen for this academic year.

The plans for year-round school, summer school, and summer camps will be determined closer to the times they would normally open, and will be based on the same health data they are using to make other decisions about phased reopening of businesses and activities.

I know some kids who are crushed by this decision (12-year-olds) and I feel sad for them that they won't see their schoolmates and teachers again this year. And of course I feel for all the seniors who will be missing out on proms and graduation ceremonies, etc. And I know some parents of said 12-year-olds who are probably online now ordering more wine to get through the next few weeks! :hide:

But I am relieved that decisions are being made cautiously, and they are based on consultation with the public health folks in the state.

The local ND is getting ugly with the 'how dare you trample on my civil rights' gang getting more and more vocal.

Good friend told me that in his Dad's nursing home that there were 96 residents at the start of March when their quarantine started. 56 have tested positive, 10 have died. 43 staff have also tested positive. His Dad is negative at this point. Very difficult times. My friend's brother is on the other side of the border and can't get across obviously. They have been able to communicate with their Dad via FaceTime at least.

I live about 3 blocks from our governor’s residence, where some fringy-looking protestors have shown up twice. I know they are there when the news choppers hover over the neighborhood for hours, making racket. From what I read and from the signs they wave, it’s orchestrated by outsiders with “different agendas”, shall we say, than our state’s public health and economic concerns.
