Pray for my little one...

My baby was diagnosed with cancer yesterday. It's breaking my heart, but the surgery is Tuesday and vet says the lump is small since I screen her often (she had a benign cyst in 2006).

My cat was diagnosed with mammary gland cancer in January. She had a larger surface tumor that was almost 3 cm in diameter - the vet found it when turning my cat over at her annual exam to trim the claws. My vet removed the tumor two days later but the biopsy came back malignant. We had an ultrasound done and the oncologist recommended radical mastectomy (which is performed in two "chain" surgeries) followed by several weeks of chemo and of course, follow up ultrasounds. The ultrasound also showed that she had chronic pancreatitis which my vet had suspected. Most older cats tend to have several medical issues simultaneously.

Given that my cat is 14 going on 15, is not a good patient, has the pancreatitis, the tumor was quite large so success rate with treatment will be much less, and two surgeries and chemo is a lot for a older cat, I decided not to treat. Money was also a factor. I've spent almost $2K to date on surgery and ultrasound and would have to spend $5-10K more for treatment but the idea of putting my cat through all of these medical procedures was also a big factor. If we were talking about one more surgery and no chemo or chemo alone, it would probably be a different story. I do have her on steroids for the pancreatitis. So far she is doing okay. Also my vet said that she had not seen good results with surgery alone, but she was probably referring to larger tumors. Given that your cat's tumor is very small, her chances of surviving several years may be good. But I would be careful about having the vets suck you into more and more procedures if things don't go well - my vet is not too bad but the specialists I don't trust. The same oncologist had a co-worker treat his 19 year old cat who died during the chemo. I've been through this a couple of times where I treated my pets for way too long and their final year of life was not high quality. I feel guilty about this and have vowed not to do it again. That's great that you were monitoring her closely and caught it early and she is still relatively young for a cat at age 12. Good luck!

I have a cat going through a "Parkinsons" problem. The vet didn't think it would make it this far. It's a cat.....I love it....but it's a cat. I won't make any friends.....but don't spend stupid amounts of money on it. Your life will go on.....

Life does go on after loss. And I would agree on not spending stupid amounts of money on a dying life.....including human. But that does not need to be said when someone is grieving and in pain.

No offense, but I would not have wanted to read certain comments when my cat was battling. Positivity matters and her vet was as positive as you could be. He (and she) were heroes.

2035..Please spend as much time as you can with her NOW just in case...

I am going to be thinking of you on Tuesday.....I hope everything goes well....

But if it should not, Just know there are people out here who do understand how you are feeling..

Yes life does go on, for EVERYTHING that happens in life...

That does not mean one must point out the obvious, especially in this thread...

We all know what the inevitable fate is.

I have had many many many cats in my life...all were special to me, and it hurt the

same every time one passed......

Now is not the time to think about "moving on".

Anyway...I'm hoping it won't come to that at this point.

Good luck.

I say look at the quality of life of the pet. Right now I have a little maltese mix that I adopted from the pound last January. He's about 6. Well he started passing out. He ended up at the specialist. Long story short he has severe pulmonary hypertension. His cardiologist ( yes I know) thought he has about a year. He's on liquid Viagra twice a day and seems to be enjoying life and doing much better. So there you go. I'm hopeful it'll be more than a year! If my pet is happy than I'm happy.

Now I know why God had me buy a house that went up 20%, sell it after a year, so I could give her the best treatment...but I'd sell my own kidney to do it even if I didn't have the funds.

Anyone have a kitty with breast cancer that went on to live several more years.View attachment 18934

I've never had a cat with cancer, but I've always had my doubts about whether aggressive treatment, particularly chemotherapy, is ever in the best interest of the cat. Now that I've had chemotherapy for cancer myself, I would euthanize a pet before subjecting it to that. It's a miserable experience, and while a person can understand the potential future benefit of the treatment and that the misery is temporary, you can't explain that to a cat or dog.

Having said that, I hope your kitty comes through the surgery with flying colors, and that the surgery by itself keeps the cancer at bay for the rest of her normal lifespan.

Keep your chin up, 2035. Its amazing what they can do for animals with cancer. One of our beagles was diagnosed with lymphoma. We chose to do chemo and he had another entire year of very high quality life, ultimately making it to age 15 (we think, always a guess as to a rescue's age).

+1 with every word

Surgery went well. I pick up my little honey tomorrow. 😂 thank you for all the well wishes.

That is great news!

My friend has a cat that has gone through some tough times, and our vet calls her "The Tabby-Nator" because she's so tough. She's still here, long after she wasn't expected to be. You just never know.

Don't cats get nine lives? (I'm a dog person, but I've heard tell . . . . )

Take care of yourself as well as your 'little honey,' and good wishes to you both. :flowers:

I hope this doesn't seem insensitive, but I saw this on Facebook recently and got a chuckle out of it.

Test results came back and doc is very please. The border around the tumor looks clean and no cancer found lymph nodes.😂

That is good to hear, 2035. Thanks for the update.

That's very encouraging news! I know you must be breathing easier just having gotten through the surgery part. I always find it stressful when my little ones undergo surgery, even if it is "routine" which this certainly was not.

The fact that she is feisty shows she is already on the road to healing from the surgery. Keep us posted on her progress. :flowers:

My girl had her first chemo treatment last week and f/u blood work to check that everything is okay and she's doing great. Thanks for the good prayers. It makes a big difference working with a vet oncologist I think.

Happy for both you and Kitty!

Happy Update: My little muffin finished her last (5th) chemo treatment on Wednesday and her chest X-Ray was all clear. I'm so happy!!!!!!

Thanks for all the positive wishes.
