The History of Early-Retirement.org

Thanks for the great summary of E-R.org history.

Thanks, REWahoo! Great job.

I can't wait for the "unpublished history" of some of the board's more notorious posters...

Your synopsis made me miss some of our earlier participants and wonder how they are doing these days. I love Dory's description of the transition from family picnic to nightclub scene.
It's interesting how much turnover there's been from Dory's first thread. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to track it.

An earlier version of the board's software used to show users a history chart of when they were online (time of day) and total hours. Most revealing.

Some of the early [-]flame wars[/-] disagreements used to rage for days (as could the spammers) before Dory would anchor out, tether his laptop to his cell phone, and log in to do a little moderation...

Wow... I read through most of the MMND posts... did she ever come back?

This thread also exemplifies another personality trait of the forum: thread hijacking. While many forums have specific rules prohibiting any attempt to vary from the initial subject, no such rule exists at E-R.org. “Threadjacking” is a high art form on the board with the underlying concept that if the subject bears discussing, thread participants will eventually steer it back on course. This free-wheeling, often irreverent approach, combined with the irrepressible sense of humor displayed by many posters, does occasionally irritate new members – until they understand this is merely part of the entertainment package provided by the forum – free of charge!

So, how long before this thread gets hijacked? ;)

I believe she came back about a month later with one final post to "wish us well".
I was a moderator at the time. There was at least as much background messaging between MMND and the moderators trying to help her fit in and perhaps tone down her style. It was an interesting and rather unhappy situation.

Patience my a$$, let's get this party started...

I barely recall what the fuss was about with MMND, other than it was 'interesting'. Not so interesting to make me want to go back and re-read the thread though. :nonono: :nonono:

Are you sure that final post wasn't something that just rhymed with "wish you well"?

Thanks so much for posting this historical capture. As a fairly recent member I have learned more about ER here then anywhere else, and have enjoyed the process greatly.

Who knew that retirement leads to such great humor and wit!

As a four year almost poster it has and will continue to be great. It lead me to ESR three years ago!
