What do you think about tattoos?

To me, unless you're within a couple of feet of the person, you really can't tell what it's supposed to be. Most look like bad bruises. DD has several. Look stupid. But, I'm old and don't know much and obviously "not with it".

Once, DD brought a guy to dinner that had those giant holes in his ears. I couldn't eat.

Yeah, just a little dot. Look like a freckle only darker. Somewhere visible too. Right there out in the open.

Then I can say I have a tattoo. And it's visible - :)

Yeah, exactly. I can say I have a tattoo and not be lying - :)

Changing the subject 90 degrees, I just saw where a state law recently passed, outlawing the tattooing of the eyes - the whites, that is. Seems like you wouldn't need such a law. But, of course, people will always find a way to surprise you.

In general, I'm not a fan of tattoos but I would admit to admiring some of the amazing art work. Since moving to the Islands, I've actually found myself quite interested in some of the "traditional" tattoos. The geometric designs are stunning to view. I can't imagine enduring the traditional method of tattooing however.

We have become friends with a couple who are tattoo artists. Our relationship helps reduce some of the prejudice we once had about tattoos. When you find out most people are "just people", the outward stuff seems much less important. If we could all get to that place with all (or at least most) of our differences, it just might be a better world - but I'm getting way off subject again. YMMV

I have not yet seen a tattoo that I could imagine to love enough to have it on the wall of my living room.
Even less on my body for the rest of my life.

I’m not a fan of tattoos and would never get one myself, but if others want them, that’s their business. I do wonder whether the young people that have them now will regret them later. My niece has a small tattoo on her side that doesn’t show unless she’s wearing a bikini and it’s kind of cute, but even so, I wonder if she will like it when she’s 50 or 60.

As far as piercings, my ears are pierced but I never went for the multiple holes or piercings in other places. Tongue, nose, and eyebrow piercings gross me out, as do the stretched earlobes.

I realize this is somewhat of a generational issue, but at least the stuff we liked to wear 40 years ago could all be changed easily - long hair can be cut, facial hair can be shaved, weird color hair can be remedied. Not so easy with tattoos and huge holes in the earlobes. To me getting a visible tattoo is like deciding to wear the same shirt every day for the rest of your life. Can’t imagine a subject I’d want to see on my body forever.

When I was young it seemed like only guys who were in the military had tattoos. Nowadays almost everyone has them. I don't have any so I guess I'm in the minority now. I find some of them fascinating and others not so much. When and where did this trend start? I find it funny that many people claim to have no money, but they are all inked up. No wonder they are broke, those tattoos aren't cheap!

i don't have any tattoos ( or piercings ) not that i hate them

but about 18 years old , i worked out i already had several scars and wasn't afraid to accumulate more ( i probably should have gotten a tattoo disclosing my blood type , but where was a good place to put it , LOL )

so rather than waste money and ruin artwork i resisted the urge , i did keep on collecting scars though , as i age i can still look in the ( stainless steel ) mirror and those scars ( well most of them ) bring back memories

in my circle of associates i am probably a rarity in being a ' clean-skin ' , i don't ask the few without visible ink/body piercings .

PS i still claim to 'have no money ' ( elsewhere ) it reduces the chances of being a crime victim .

majority or minority doesn't matter to me , making what turned out to be a good choice for me did .

A kid I know got a large tattoo of Apple's logo on his back when he was maybe 20 years old because he was a huge Apple fan. Do you get paid by Apple for the advertisement?
A young guy at work was wearing shorts and I noticed both calves had huge "Transformers" logos on them.

I find that completely baffling.

I don't have any. Very few that I see are well done, those that are can be interesting, on someone else.

I have a little one. Its about the size of a nickel and is on the side of my right heel- its covered by nearly all of my shoes, so its usually only visible when I'm barefoot. I got it when I was in my early twenties- I don't hate it- it isn't who I am but its who I was when I was young. I forget about it most of the time as I don't see it much- when I'm getting a pedicure, or sitting outside barefoot maybe.

I DO think those earlobe discs are disgusting. And I have done a lot of hiring over the years and passed over several applicants because of visible- especially neck- tattoos.

All the cool kids have them.

I am one of the later Baby Boomers. I don't have any and never will. Used to be it was military and criminals that had tattoos. But if you want one that's OK with me...whatever floats your boat. I do enjoy looking at some of the really artistic ones, though. I think it is a fad and wonder what the next one will be...besides blue hair, ear rings in tongues, titty rings, etc. Some of that represents a certain culture that I don't associate with.

.

I dislike tattoos. They are vulgar and low-class.

I hardly ever read this site anymore and its mainly because there are so many close minded crotchety stubborn people here.

Judging people over something as harmless as a tattoo is low class.

All I could think was: This dude is 28 and ain't ever going to find a girl.

Then again, maybe it is a chick magnet? What do I know?

I got mine 20 years ago. It’s a bit faded, but I still like it. Don’t regret it at all and never have. DW has one from when she was young and has been planning another for about 5 years. Many are quite beautiful, many are not.

For some reason, I find piercings much more bizarre. Even earrings.

Even if I liked the way they look (I admit I don't- instant turn off) I have a question- Do these people ever change their minds about fashion choices they make?

If you know that at various times in your life you change your clothing style, your hair style and color, your facial hair, your make-up style, etc., why would you ever want to commit to a permanent tattoo? And pay someone a lot of your money to do it?

Maybe more of the ones we see nowadays are temporary and we just don't know it. For their sake, I hope so.

The whole thing baffles me.

My wife got an ankle tattoo several years ago.. Chinese letter that supposedly means ‘Wisdom’.. a few years later we asked a Chinese gentleman to confirm that translation. He looked at it and said it says ‘broccoli chicken’.

My son took my DW and me to his favorite tattoo parlor to try to convince us it was legitimate and clean. While there, a friend of his came over to show me the mock-up of a Bible verse he was going to have tattooed--it was in Greek. Since I majored in Greek at Bible school, I had the privilege to tell him that what he was going to have permanently tattoed on his arm was no where close to the actual Bible verse he thought it was.:nonono:

The body piercings and large body tattoos have been going on and highly visible since the 1980s! How can something that has persisted for well over thirty years be called a “fad”?

Can turn into a very expensive habit.

One acquaintance had full sleeves & full back tats.

I could have bought a nice used vehicle for what he said those cost...

Some may have found my comment about tattoos as insensitive. Perhaps rude even. So, I have deleted it.

Some beautiful girl, who's obviously crazy for you, turns out to have a great big butterfly tattooed on her back and you say "No, I need you to go away now"? I don't believe it.

I don't have any and don't plan to ever have any. I consider it a turnoff on women generally. A small butterfly on the ankle is ok but if you have a large tattoo on your side, arm, or leg...no thanks.

Tattoos are now a sign of class and behavior? Mr. Rogers had tattoos.

I think I need to block this thread.
