Sincere apology to Tiger

I think that Tiger has made a meritorious contribution to the game of golf. Such recognition does not contemplate personal behavior.

No one is going to change anyone else’s mind here,

Probably not here, and now. But I think Tiger lost many fans after a scandal after another. He lost me, too. Then his singular approach to come back earned my respect, made me follow his comebacks, and admire the end result. We don't have to like him as a person. But what he did for his comeback? What is there to NOT like?

And as I got older (and wiser, I hope), I realized that these superstars are just kids in their 20s & 30s, surrounded by admirers, sycophants, and opportunists. I'd think it'd be difficult for them to live a "model" life that some of us expect them to.

Heroes:

Enter burning buildings.
Endure enemy fire.
Challenge convention under threat of violence.
Etc.

They aren’t heroes because they play golf, or guitar...

Having said all that, it is possible to acknowledge achievement without the hero worship thing...

Hero defined:

a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

sounds like tiger is a hero to me

Noble? You have to be kidding. Here is the definition of noble:

" possessing, characterized by, or arising from superiority of mind or character or of ideals or morals : lofty"

You can say the guy is a great golfer and I will agree, but to say he has "noble qualities" is beyond absurd.

I've said enough on the subject of Tiger, this is it for me.........

I've always have been a Tiger fan too. Talking to many about Tiger, I was always taken aback by the visceral hate of Tiger Woods.

Tiger's greatest asset is between the ears. Look at how brilliantly he played the last hole to secure a bogey. Vintage Tiger. You would not see most pros playing that hole the way Tiger did.

Being from SoCal, before Tiger ever won his first tournament, many thought Tiger would beat Jack's major record. And when Tiger started winning (very soon on the tour), the media took notice, but not the way it does now. I remember when he said he won with his "C game". The other players took offense and actually had Davis Love talk to Tiger. Truth was, Tiger was right.

Yep, Tiger will beat Jack's record. And Mr. Nicklaus hasn't said so, but I would think he would say Tiger is the better golfer.

BTW, this bothered me on Tiger's win: with such an adoring crowd, standing ovation upon standing ovation--couldn't he have taken a moment to take a bow, or recognize the fans immediately after the victory?

Did you miss the "or"?

He qualifies as a hero based on his outstanding achievements, period

I participate lightly on some golf forums. The subject of TW generates the same degree of passion normally devoted to conversations about religion and politics.

Pretty much everyone is a hero now. That term has been thrown around so much over the last couple years...its lost a lot of meaning. Its unfortunate.

LOL no, and that's because he's a scumbag.

Tiger fan or not, I'd recommend Haney's book about him (the big miss). It's a good look into just how strange of a guy he is. Very little of it deals with the "stuff" he went through. Just about every aspect of his being is odd.

Greatest golfer to play the game, easily, but a complete waste of human flesh in just about all other regards.

Wow. With the amount of judgment and self-righteousness I see in this thread, I would never dream of trying to walk on any of your lawns...

I think some people are getting a little too worked up over someone they claim not to like. Maybe they should just ignore the thread? Failing that, maybe they should list all of the sports figures and celebrities they like so we can pick apart their faults?

You mean spitting in the cup or beating the sand in a bunker senseless isnt hero-like? that dude has some serious anger issues...him and Rahm must be buddy buddy.

yes! very poor golf etiquette

feel free - I just mowed Saturday

Tiger will have to answer for being whatever he is. Don’t really care. In my view, probably the GOAT.

My point in this discussion is that we cheapen the meaning of the word to call some celebrity a hero. Nothing heroic about playing golf...

Nothing heroic about playing golf...

absolutely!

how can you call the hundreds of millions of dollars that get funnelled annually via charity golf tournaments to organizations like make a wish, st jude, habitat for humanity....heroic?

Aside from hero or not. Or deserving of medal of freedom or not.

Here's the question I'm most interested in:

When is the next majors champion? Could get interesting to see if his comeback is a one time thing or a trend.

PGA Championship which used to be played in August as the last of the season's majors has been moved to May. The weekend of the 18th I think. You'll not have long to wait.

then us open and british open to follow

This thread reminds me of a conversation I heard John Kruk (if you don't know who he is, Google him...he was MLB's answer to John Daly, sort of) describe. He got off of the Phillies team bus smoking a cigarette. A lady who was there among many fans who showed up to catch a glimpse of their "heroes" admonished him for smoking in front of the kids.
"You athletes should be better role models!" she chided.
His response was "I'm not an athlete. I'm a baseball player."
