Worked my part-time job both Wednesday and Thursday this week. Job is fairly physical hauling rock, sand, gravel for lab testing out of a gravel operation and taking hot Asphalt Concrete samples from an asphalt batch plant and out of trucks.

Currently restoring my tired muscles with a tasty bourbon.

I worked about half the day today also, except at my desk here at home.

Light in the fridge went out so I got that fixed.

Baked a batch of muffins.

Booked a trip to France in 2022. I've been waffling on booking the flight, but decided to pull the trigger before the price went up. I can always cancel if I have to.

Replaced windshield wipers on wife's car. Cleared bedroom for carpet replacement tomorrow. Walked dogs and brought home wonderful wet burrito for lunch from fav taqueria.

I really enjoyed tired muscles after retiring. Lol I know that sounds crazy but always loved the physical part of work. I feel better and I believe it is good for the body and soul.

Did one of the NH 4000 footers yesterday. Beautiful hike with fantastic foliage,. The drive up thru the Squam Lake region and Center Sandwich NH was worth it alone. First 4000er for the dog. Number 33 for DW. Great day.
After driving back for 2 hours , we notice a hiker walking along our dirt road. Sure enough it is brother in law. He had just hiked 24 miles that day and by pure luck we were driving by(trail goes right by house) at the same time. Needless to say he did not refuse a night of pasta, pizza, shower and laundry. All worked out great and he was off again before we even woke.

Computer Fire

I had a fire in my computer yesterday. For whatever reason the cable running to my CPU fan shorted with the power cable running to my DVD drive. The two cables came in contact and "poof, sizzle, smoke". Thankfully I was sitting here next to the computer when it happened so I could frantically kill the power and disconnect everything. Kind of scary considering my computer is on 24/7/365 to perform various tasks. I hate to think what could have happened if we were sleeping or away from the house.

I wasn't using the DVD drive at the time and CPU fans don't draw much power so I don't know why either cable would overheat. Friction wear through the cables maybe, but nothing should be moving inside the computer case. Weird.

I pulled the computer apart, removed the DVD drive and burnt wires, cleaned up the soot, and vacuumed out the dust bunnies. I had another CPU fan on hand so I replaced that. Powered up and everything seems to be working normally.

I did order a new power supply, fully modular this time to reduce the number of unused cables in the case. I also ordered a new case fan and DVD/BluRay drive. Should be here Monday so I can rebuild fully.

Scary stuff... I had a similar situation several years ago when the computer power supply popped and started pouring smoke from under the desk.

My computer is connected to a surge protected UPS so surges shouldn't be a major issue.

Took all day to get rid of that burnt plastic smell, with air fresheners, open windows, and vent fans running.

Went to the doc's office and got my COVID booster shot, followed by a short grocery run on the way home. While at the doc's office I also scheduled flu shots for Nov 6 for both me and DW. They have "flu shot clinics" on alternate Saturdays in the fall.

I resolved a problem with my home audio that’s been bugging me for a couple of years.

I have Bose speakers throughout the home that were purchased separately between 2016 and 2019. At that time, Bose had their own “SoundTouch” platform that allowed controlling all of the speakers, individually and in combination.

The SoundTouch app also linked to your iTunes library over your home network. It worked nicely.

When Apple decided to get rid of iTunes in favor of Apple Music it also cut off SoundTouch as a side effect. Only existing tracks remained available, any new music added to Apple Music weren’t seen by Bose SoundTouch. Quite frustrating since I occasionally add new albums.

I’d given up but decided to give it one last go (and prayer) by resetting each speaker to its factory default and then doing a current system software update on each. That took much of an afternoon.

But voila! Everything works again (yay!). I’ll now have to get used to Apple Music’s interface (Bose’s was better in my opinion but dead horse and all that..)

It finally stopped raining so I worked on my RV grey tank plumbing. I'm short one part, but was heartened to see it was in Portland (20 minutes away) on Tuesday, so I anticipated it would be delivered soon.

I checked the package tracking and now find it was in Kansas City yesterday and is now in Missouri. Estimated delivery next Tuesday, a full week after it was 20 minutes away. USPS :(

Gave a power red blood donation at the local Red Cross this morning. They are short staffed like so many other places, so the entire process from location entry to exit took twice as long as usual. But no worries or my part, it is for a good cause, and I am retired, no need to rush anywhere :)

It helped that my ego was fed while there. After I had been waiting for about 30 minutes, the receptionist came over and asked if I was military. I said, no, I was never brave enough for that. She replied "well, you are certainly keeping the build for it". Ooh la la, vanity, thy name is jollystomper. Of course, it may have been a ploy to keep my mind off of how long the process was taking - and it did work :D. After I was finished, during the 15 minute wait time, she came over a couple of times to see how I was doing, and did not run away screaming seeing my face without a mask :D:D.

The afternoon and evening was spent being IT support in prepping for and helping DW with a Zoom talk she had done for a local organization that some of her friends and our fellow alumni were interested to hear. We ended up with over 20 folks on the Zoom session, from 3 continents, and though planned for an hour it went almost 2, as some of the folks knew each but had not seen each other (or us) for years.

Went roller-skating in the middle of the day with the family. We homeschool and have a senior and a sophomore. I really cherish these things we can do together before the oldest flies the coop for college and changes the dynamic at home. Bittersweet to say the least.

Yesterday I got my flu shot, my hair cut, and I did some grocery shopping.

I'm planning on going to cut some down timber. Branches need to removed and logs chunked up. I'm hoping it isn't to muddy to get in with the heavy wet snow mid week. I was going to wait till mid winter but I'm going to get started in better weathah.

Bent the arm of my ballcock :) to stop a leak from my overflow then hung a picture DW got in April for her 60th birthday.

Unexpected visitor

Had an unexpected visitor come into my back yard during the storm Thursday morning. It almost got my old birdhouse that squirrels hang out in.

Currently just chillin’ (literally) with our completely new HVAC system installed this morning. Spent the morning watching two very skilled HVAC guys remove the old system, run new copper lines and wiring under the slab foundation, install new air handler in an inside closet and new compressor outside. 3.5 hours start to finish including them cleaning up outside and sweeping the inside. The old system was repairable but the parts have been unavailable for months due to supply shortage. After 8 days of no a/c in the central Florida autumn (90 degree highs) we decided to abandon the search for parts and replace the old system with a different brand with hopefully better parts support. Hope we don’t need to test the warranty any time soon.

Cyclocross bike race this morning. Finished 11th, just missing todays goal of finishing in top 10.

Lining up again after lunch for some more wheel-to-wheel … and max heart rate … racing action.

And picked up a first in the afternoon race.

Ordered a bunch of parts from Menard's for the outside hose bibs in anticipation of repairing one that was leaking, and then having some left over for future use. Then took the leaking one apart and found the leak was cause by a loose washer screw not letting it seat properly.

Decided not to cancel the Menard's order since having the parts on hand will virtually guarantee that I'll never need them. I have become wise to the ways those things work.

Booked a table at a local restaurant for my brother and me. It will be my first time eating out since Covid. Here in Norway 90% of adults are vaccinated and the numbers are low and dropping so we decided it was time.

Good for you! I see no reason you shouldn't be able to get back to normal life now, since everything I read about Norway's progress has been positive. I would love to visit, but it's not yet possible for us. Our last trip was in 2019 and everything about it was wonderful. You're lucky to live in such a beautiful country.

Today marks exactly 20 years since my last day of paid employment.

Since then I have:

  • run 3 marathons and 9 half marathons
  • traveled all over the US and parts of Canada
  • visited 22 other countries, some of them multiple times
  • maintained my weight not far from my college weight
  • moved twice, now in final home (hopefully)
  • acquired four new hobbies and reactivated two old ones

and never worried even once what I would do all day.
