NFL: 2021 Season

PM this week’s lotto numbers to me please.

Better yet, let me know "red" or "black" when I visit the 9th Island (Vegas for you mainlanders.) I want to double my stash in one play! YMMV

It took Packers OT to beat the 49ers. Besides, 49ers have Packers’ # in playoffs in recent years.

It will be 49ers vs Bills in SB.

There’s actually a chance the 9’ers don’t even make the playoffs this year.

If the Saints beat the Falcons, which is likely and SF loses to LA which is possible, then SF is out.

Some of the powerhouses during much of the season seem to be losing steam in the last few weeks and some of the real duds (Texans excluded, they are still duds) have been doing much better.

Examples, look what happened to the Cardinals recent loss to the Lions. That was a shocker. And Tampa Bay seems to be struggling recently and just pulling out a win this week against the Jets which should have been an easy win. Maybe the Covid protocols are taking a toll?

Picking the SB teams and eventual winner is going to be harder this year. No overwhelming dominating team(s) this season from my POV... Even Green Bay is a bit shaky (maybe it's the cold :) Still rooting for the Buccaneers to go all the way again, but "they need to find it".

Yeah the playoffs are a total crapshoot this year, any team that gets in has a chance to go all the way if they get hot. There are no dominant teams.

Covid will play a role too. You never know week to week who has to sit out.

It can make all the difference. Teams can get by without one lineman or cornerback but if someone like Rodgers or Brady goes out, that changes everything.

I think Rodgers is now immune under NFL rules, but I could be mistaken on that.

I think a lot of the really key players on any of the playoff teams will be immune for the next few weeks due to the $$,$$$,$$$ factor. Unless Covid has them noticeable sick, I suspect they will play one way or another.

I'm no doctor or scientist but I think if Rodgers got the Delta variant then he could still get the Omicron strain. He is less likely to get it just like a vaccinated person but he could still get it since the Delta antibodies or the vaccine are different than the Omicron mutation. Something like that?

I thought there is a 6 month get out of jail free card issued by the NFL if you have already been quarantined. Could be wrong about that though.

The new testing rules *might* lessen that, as only symptomatic people are subject to testing. They have also shortened the quarantine period per CDC guidelines

The NFL is a money machine, the last thing they want are playoffs "tainted" by covid (bad enough when they are tainted by bad calls :)) so I will not be surprised if somehow they are likely to come up with something that causes this to be less of an impact.

You must have been watching the Cowboy/Cardinal game on Sunday. Refs missed (?) the Cardinal fumble late in the game that maybe/likely would have changed the outcome of the game. IIRC, the Cowboys were out of timeouts at that point and couldn't challenge the call. Real bummer when games are won/loss like that!

I'm pretty sure its an NFL regulation that Tom Brady has to be in the Super Bowl.

when his knee touched the ground the play was over.

Watching the entire video from different angles, it didn't look to me as if his knee touched the ground until "after" the ball was lost/fumbled/moving. In one angle it did look like the knee touched, but in another the ball was moving before the knee first touched the ground. (IMO) In any case, the "play action" was hidden from the ref's view and the play should have been reviewed. He was probably a Cardinals fan and/or had money on the game.:)

I guess it all evens out in the end, you lose some and win some but on critical games (this wasn't one of them since they will both be in the playoffs) it could be a big deal.

The left knee was the first to hit the ground and the ball was already lose at that time so it was a fumble. I think teams should be able to get as many challenges as they want until their second non-reversal then they are out of challenges. With the tech available today there is no reason for a game to be decided by the refs making a wrong call. Notice I said "wrong" not "bad". That was a close call and in full speed nearly impossible to call with certainty.

It's hard to tell from that particular video, but when I saw it, probably from a different angle, the ball looked loose to me, so IMO, a fumble. Nevertheless the Cowboys/Dak were still awful and did not deserve to win.

I looked at just the video posted, and my impression is that Refs saw nothing loose, made a call, and that's unfortunate for one team. If coach had another challenge then it might get reversed with additional video angles. I did not watch the game, but it was on (Go Eagles!). I'm glad they lost, and glad they may play the Cardinals again, and get to prove who is the better team.

I did read a lot of post-game whining from the players, but Jer was pretty accurate in reminding us of the importance of 10 penalties. This site has the penalties.
"The Arizona Cardinals committed 7 penalties for 45 yards. They were flagged a total of 8 times.
The Dallas Cowboys committed 10 penalties for 88 yards. They were flagged a total of 11 times."

As bad as the "missed and bad" calls are during the regular season (they happen every game that I watch) they absolutely ruin the season in the playoffs when every game is sudden death. Maybe they (the officials) should have several instant replay spotters in the booth looking for missed or bad calls (especially in the playoffs) and alert the white hat on the field before the next play... (That works for the head coaches working with their spotters and throwing red flags) Of course that's a slippery slope since if they called every holding or face mask call they could never finish a game.

Yes, indeed. There seems to be offensive line holding and defensive backfield holding on just about every play. A called penalty is like a random speeding ticket on the interstate highway when traffic is moving along at 20 mph over the speed limit.
