What new series are you watching? *No Spoilers, Please*

It's not a series but we enjoyed the Netflix movie Don't Look Up and particularly the comic element in it:

Two astronomers go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. The response from a distracted world: Meh.

Currently watching Hawkeye, Marvels series. It is OK, although the Marvel series spinoffs are getting old.

I don't think they are going anywhere since they are making A LOT of money. I have never been a fan of "comic book" movies/shows, but I guess I am in the minority.

For some reason I cannot understand, this thread still needs a mod reminder every few pages to avoid spoilers. Title updated.

Started Station Eleven - Looks quite appropriate after the first episode at least.

......... Dumped Station Eleven after 3 Episodes, Yawn.

I finished watching first season of Reacher on Amazon Prime and like it.

Started the Gilded Age on HBO. It's released one-per-week. I had high hopes that it would be a biting smart period piece.

Pity...it's not. It's more a transplanted Downton Abbey, and not in a good way. I will still watch, but based on Ep1, these actors deserved better dialogue.
We’re enjoying it very much. The latest episode 3 was incredibly dramatic! Can’t wait for 4.

I see little resemblance to Downton Abbey. It’s very much about New York in the 1880s and the themes are very much American - robber barons, city hall politics, stock market, people of color, etc. The Roosevelts etc., are disdained by some of the the old guard as “new money”, ha ha.

As a brand new HBOMax subscriber, I just binged Rome and it was compelling if a little heavy on the sex and violence but I'm told that that is HBO's bread and butter.

Now, I'm interested in checking out I, Claudius!
HBO Rome was fantastic! It made me look up a lot of the historical context, and most of it was right on, including the violence. Amazing!

I got hooked on Cleopatra’s theme. And one day walking in from the train station to see the mostly intact Roman Theatre in Orange, France, we heard the theme playing on the downtown loudspeakers. We’d walking into Roman Days with a bunch of costumes re-enactments! In the theater the emperor was there watching the entertainments, and after the gladiator fights the emperor yelled to the crowd for thumbs up thumbs down. The return roar was deafening in this massive theater! Was an amazing experience.

I mentioned this before. If you like series that have a big dose of happiness then PBS’s Seaside Hotel is great. A comedy which has so far 7 seasons it takes place in Denmark starting in the late 1920’s and into WW2 I believe. It’s subtitled and we don’t much like subtitles but this is exceptional.
We enjoyed it. I enjoy getting a glimpse of life through foreign culture eyes, and enjoyed the location and historical period setting.

The PBS app works quite well on Apple TV.

Signed up for Disney+ and watched WandaVision. It's unique and it's been very interesting so far. It's sci-fi, but it starts out like a 50's sitcom and it's quite funny as well. I'm not much of a Marvel fan, so DH had to explain some of the details of what was happening to me, but even without it, people can figure out what's going on.

This isn't a series (although it should have been a two-part series though as it was very long - 2hrs 32 min), but we also watched The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott. Enjoyed it. With some well-known actors like Matt Damon (star), Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, The White Princess), Adam Driver (Marriage Story, BlacKkKlansman)

I've read Colleen McCullough's The First Man in Rome which is a very detailed and footnoted historical fiction work set in 110 to 100 BC when Gaius Marius ruled. Those people got up to a lot of wild stuff. She wrote more in this series including the Julius Caesar era. A good read for pre-travel especially to Italy.

Inventing Anna is a great insight into how the ultra rich live..Anna is played by the girl playing Ruth Langmore from another great series Ozark..

"The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window."

Eight part mini series, 30 minutes each, on Netflix. Supposed to be a satirical take on the voyeuristic nosy female neighbor murder mystery genre (yes, this is a thing) but the jokes are obtuse and the pacing is glacial. Have seen first four episodes and do not want to continue but wife is insisting. Kirsten Bell stars and does an admirable job with a lousy script.

We just started watching Reacher last night. Much to my surprise, I loved the first episode! I thought the actor was absolutely terrific in that role, and I thought the plot was believable and the supporting cast was well chosen too. I also liked the music which was consistent with what was happening without being too terrifying for me to handle.

Watched the first two episodes last night and enjoyed them. There was an unnecessarily gory scene in episode 2.
Tonight we plan to watch the second episode. I'll just cover my eyes during the gruesome scene - - thanks for the "heads up".

Could it be that Hollywood has finally decided to resume making series that I actually enjoy, for the first time in years? Who knows! But this one sure seems promising. So far, so good.

You don't want to miss:

Father Brown
Vera (you'll love her)
The Bill
Line of Duty
The Bay

and for absolute foolishness:

"Benidorm" and "Gill Mayo Mysteries"
Thanks I'll add them to my list.
I found Benidorm 2 days before the end of the trial and I have never laughed so hard in my life but I had to move to Hulu to get some use out of that subscription that I bought in November. I will resign in a couple of months to watch the rest of these.

I finished watching first season of Reacher on Amazon Prime and like it.

DW and I had read some of the books, shook our heads at portraying Reacher with a 5'7" Tom Cruise in the movies, and then we binge watched the series this week/weekend. It was a fun diversion. No spoilers I will leave it at that :)

One thing from Rome that I hadn’t understood before was the strategic importance of Egypt. Egypt was Europe’s breadbasket and as such Rome had to prop up this ancient decaying empire.

We e travelled a lot of the Roman ruins in southern France where a Julius Caesar spent a lot of time.

DW and I watched Marry Me on Peacock with JLo and Owen Wilson. It was well worth the price (free on Peacock). Actually, we did enjoy it and JLo is easy on the eyes.
